• Inexpensive DJ Setup

    For anyone looking for a small, multi-functional DJ Setup, I put what works fore me below. Of course, depending on what you want to do will greatly influence what equipment you need. This setup is based on PC DJ'ing, Karaoke, and a small/medium size venue. Additionally, this system is "light" and can fit in back of a car. When you purchase a DJ Setup, think about the weight and setup time since you will be lugging the equipment around and it is not fun after a while if you have a heavy setup.

    Basic Inexpensive DJ Setup:

    * Two IBM T61 Laptops
    - These can be picked up for less than $150.00 from newegg.com. The sound setup works very good "no humm or hissing" and IBM/Lenovo's are very reliable.
    One can be used for Music and the other can be hooked up to a projector to show pictures/video feeds.

    * Newmark 5000FX mixer
    - One can be picked up from ebay for under $300.00. This is a good "novice" mixer which has an hardware "effects" wheel with basic DJ sound effects. An upgrade to this would be a Pioneer Mixer such as a DJM-900 Nexus Pro for professional DJ'ing, but you're going to pay upwards of $1000 for a used one.

    - Peavey Pvi6500 400 Watt 6-Channel Amp/Mixer. One can be picked up for around $300. They are 400 watts and have Bluetooth built in. Also, it comes with various effects which make it good for karaoke. This is a good Small/Medium venue mixer. Also, Peavey makes solid equipment.

    * Peavey PR12 12" Inch PA DJ Speakers
    - Two can be picked up for under $400. They are light, loud and easy to travel with. There is a big size difference between the 12 to 15 inch speakers. Unless you need 15 inch speakers I would recommend sticking with a smaller lighter speaker. A 10 inch speaker may even work for you as they are loud too.

    * Microphone
    - Axess MPWL1504-BK Professional Dual Wireless Microphone. You can pick this up for $30. This microphone works. But, of course, the more money you pay the better the mics. This microphone it small and looks good sitting on top of the Peavey 6500 mixer. Make sure you have at least two microphones. Also, if the microphone is crucial, you may want to go with expensive professional ones.

    - Epson Projector
    Any projector will work. But, Epson makes good projectors but you may pay a little more. I would stay away from the cheap projector and make sure you get one with at least 3000 lumens. $300.

    * Software: For ease of use and Video Streaming, I would suggest Virtual DJ.
    There are other software DJ platforms and which one you choose will probably be determined by what Kind of DJ'ing you do. For PC Dj'ing, Virtual DJ is reliable, has nice features, and can be used for Free.

    * Lighting: ADJ AGGRESSOR LED Lighting
    - This one can get complicated and is another discussion by itself. But, to start out, you'll need lighting that can fill a room. An ADJ Aggressor will fill a large room and looks good with a smoke machine. They run around $150 each and are light and reliable. Use two of these. Try to purchase lights with LEDs, these last a long time and don't consume alot of power.

    So, for everything and then adding cash for cables, you'll spend around $2000 for a complete DJ setup.

    Note: I would suggest to stay away from any USB mixer such as a Hercules RMX or any other manufacturer. These can cause problems when you set them up and are just not worth the stress to get them working. When you have 200 people waiting for music, you don't want to mess with getting your USB devices working. Also, these go obsolete fairly quickly as new models keep coming out.
    Just not work the money.

    Comments are welcome!

    Thanks for sharing your DJ setup information. I haven't done DJing, but if I ever were to get into it, you've provided some useful information.
