Ham Radio Glossary - An overview of amateur radio terms.

    Earth station
An amateur station located on, or within 50 km of the Earth's surface
intended for communications with space stations or with other Earth
stations by means of one or more other objects in space.

    EAS
Emergency Alert System. Formerly the Emergency Broadcast System.
A system where at first an attention tone is transmitted over all
stations, add the second tone, followed with specific instructions
regarding the receivable frequency in the local, regional, or
national emergency. The EAS is activated during severe weather
warnings, chemical spill incidents, dam breaks, etc. Previously
known as the Emergency Broadcast System (EBS).

    EBS
Emergency Broadcast System. See Emergency Alert System.

    EEPROM
Electronically Erasable and Programmable Read Only Memory

    EHF
(extremely high frequency). The frequency range 30-300 GHz.

    EME
"Earth-Moon-Earth" communication; moonbounce; using the moon as a
reflector to "bounce" your signal back down to Earth. For a complete
    resource, please see http://www.nitehawk.com/rasmit/ws1_1.html

    Emergency Alert System
Also known as EAS. Formerly the Emergency Broadcast System (EBS).
A system where at first an attention tone is transmitted over all
stations, add the second tone, followed with specific instructions
regarding the receivable frequency in the local, regional, or
national emergency. The EAS is activated during severe weather
warnings, chemical spill incidents, dam breaks, etc.

    Emergency Broadcast System
    See Emergency Alert System.

    EMI
Electro-Magnetic Interference. Often called RFI (Radio Frequency
    Interference).

    Emission
    Transmission of a signal.

    Encryption
Transmitting cryptic form so that only certain people understand
what has been sent. This is used for telecommand information to
    satellites, etc.

    EQSL
"Electronic QSL"...a modern version of the QSL Card to confirm a
contact, usually done via the Internet, such as at http://www.eqsl.cc
and at the ARRL Logbook Of The World (LoTW), at http://www.arrl.org/lotw .
Note that for ARRL awards, you must use the LoTW to confirm your contacts.

    ERP
"Effective Radiated Power"; the power supplied to an antenna multiplied
by the antenna gain in a given direction (if the direction is not
specified, the direction of maximum gain is assumed).

    External RF Power Amplifier
A device capable of increasing power output when used in conjunction with,
but not an integral part of, a transmitter.

    Extra
    See "Amateur Extra".

    Eyeball
Face-to-face meeting, as in "eyeball QSO" (to speak to one another in
