*** WHAT CAN SQUARE DANCING MEAN FOR ME?? ***
* It is an inexpensive leisure time activity.
* It is excellent exercise, with one dance night being equivalent to a 5
mile walk.
* Square Dancers are friendly people, and there is no more fulfilling
social activity.
* All ages can square dance (I've seen people from 2 to 95 dancing!).
* It takes no more skill than being able to walk to learn to square dance.
*** SOME FACTS ABOUT SQUARE DANCING ***
Square dancing has its origins in the early 1700's from dance forms
brought to the colonies by the English and French. Within the last 50
years, it has developed into its present Western style of four couple
squares.
Square dancing is now so popular that around the world, there are close
to 10 million dancers. In fact, according to the 1998 National Square
Dance Directory, Square Dancing is the official folk dance of the following states:
* Alabama
* Arizona
* Arkansas
* California
* Colorado
* Connecticut
* Delaware
* Florida
* Georgia
* Idaho
* Illinois
* Kentucky
* Maryland
* Massachusetts
* Mississippi
* Missouri
* Montana
* Nebraska
* New Jersey
* North Dakota
* Oklahoma
* Oregon
* South Carolina
* South Dakota
* Tennessee
* Texas
* Utah
* Virginia
* Washington
* West Virginia
Round dancing has also become very popular. It is a companion activity
of square dancing, but is performed by individual couples, and encompasses
all the grace and smooth flowing styles of Ballroom Dancing.
