Fine by me.. :D Not sure that matters however.

I actually use some of the info in that one to keep up with whether or
not I am running the correct versions of Galactic Dynasty and For Honour.
I don't check the website much but also don't really pay attention to
the other stats messages in that echo.

sometimes i read the stats echoes for debugging. FSX_STA was the first i realized that the mailflow in net4 is kinda hectic.

I read the stats area at different times for different reasons. It's handy.

I have no problem reading it in the echo or the web but I find the echo convenient.

Of course those who don't want the stats can delink if they choose.

so far (on balance) I'd say feedback is more weighted to leave as is in echomail... but what I think I'll do next is ensure we're getting some stats (where we can) for other HUBs posted into the echo and also work to get the same content all up on fsxnet.nz as well as for now it's a bit hit and miss as to what is available and where.

I agree, even just having the stats area with regular mail you can tell if your feed has stopped working by there being no stats (Though BBS Ads also fulfill this purpose.)

this is data pulled around 4.45pm on my Sat but I'll see if I can get these both auto posted into the stats echo tonight at my midnight... all working well and some backing up of logs also being automated, next steps will be to get these two reports onto fsxnet.nz

so yep, getting there but it's taken me a few hours work to get to this point this afternoon, lots of cloning scripts and modding for the new HUB instance.

    Best, Paul

Hi Avon (and other fsxNet long-timers), I'm curious about the fsxNet nets and hubs. (not because of any problems or concerns, just curiousity)

Is there a difference between the nets within fsxNet?
My understanding is there's a hub for each net, and those within the net receive echomail and files from their net's hub. Are some hubs offering different connection methods? Are there other differences?

Thanks again for keeping this great network running smoothly!

Hi Avon (and other fsxNet long-timers), I'm curious about the fsxNet nets and hubs. (not because of any problems or concerns, just curiousity)

Is there a difference between the nets within fsxNet?

    As I recall.. :)

We started off with just net 1 and the FSX_GEN area.

If I remember right net 2 was there almost from the start.

fsxNet grew fairly quickly and soon a few more message areas were added and then a few file areas. More nets were added to get the job done.

I had to take a hiatus from BBSing because I was working out of town for a short time and when I came back net 4 was just starting up and I was assigned a node in net 4 when I came back on the scene.

Dan ran a great net/hub, his departure is a bit of a loss for fsxNet but I understand it's not always easy to find time for hobbies. Dan also wrote many mods for Mystic.

My understanding is there's a hub for each net, and those within the net receive echomail and files from their net's hub. Are some hubs offering different connection methods? Are there other differences?

Binkd is the main protocol used these days but ftp or even EMSI with a modem (if you have one). Some mailers do EMSI over telnet. Mine does but these are few and far between. I think net 3 might have such a thing.

Net 3 is using a home grown tosser/mailer. It's bleeding edge.

It's probably not needed in fsxNet but you could connect at another net, hub or node if you wanted/needed to do that.

I am connected at net 1, 3 and 4 for example. I forget now why I did that but that is the way things have come together.

Thanks again for keeping this great network running smoothly!

I think Avon will give a better, more complete answer but that's how I remeber it.

well a bit hit and miss, seems stats posted OK to the FSX_STA echo but there was a wobble with the BinkP traffic report sending to the fsxnet.nz website. I've pulled a few leavers and had a coffee.. let's see how tonight goes.

    Howdy,

Is there a difference between the nets within fsxNet?
My understanding is there's a hub for each net, and those within the net receive echomail and files from their net's hub. Are some hubs offering different connection methods? Are there other differences?

So I run Hub 3 - with something that I've created. My aim is self-service adminstration and to reduce some of the mundane activities required when running a distributed hub.

Since I've created it, I'm happy to look at different connection methods - with the core aim to preservice this hobby that we use, while taking advantage of any of today's latest technologies. If there is something that you want to try, I'm happy to take a look.

Currently implemented is IPv6 & IPv4 connectivity to BINKP, EMSI/Zmodem. You can use tor, zerotier, or TLS for any of those protocols. I'd even set up an API to get mail if there are others that would use it - and I'll probably do that when there is another clrhgouz hub...

I even started putting together a BBS frontend to clrghouz - styled on videotex (which is something that used to work on in my younger days) - but that's far from being usable...

I support all the different packet formats for bundled mail, as well as playing with new formats that help support a 5D FTN network, and/or accessing mail over low bandwidth links.

More playing this afternoon, tried to pair back the Galactic Dynasty and For Honour reports into one post each vs two. Have also altered the Subject text for most stats reports posted as echomail and (hopefully) bunched them up so they post in a logical order - interbbs, net1, net4 ... time will tell, we'll see overnight what happens.

    A work in progress.

Binkd is the main protocol used these days but ftp or
even EMSI with a modem (if you have one). Some mailers
do EMSI over telnet. Mine does but these are few and far
between. I think net 3 might have such a thing.

I am interested in testing EMSI over telnet (and over modem), I have BinkleyTerm setup but haven't actually run mail through it. One of these days I might try connecting to your system with mail if you don't mind me testing with your system.

I am connected at net 1, 3 and 4 for example. I forget
now why I did that but that is the way things have come
    together.

Do you send/receive mail through multiple nets? Any trouble with dupes?

I think Avon will give a better, more complete answer
but that's how I remeber it.

Thanks for the recap of fsxNet history, it's exactly what I have been wondering about. Curious about any more details anybody else remembers and wants to fill in. :)

I never got to use a videotex system, as far as I recall. I read a bit about Minitel, but never used it, and I'm even less familiar with other videotex systems. Without knowing anything about it, I like the idea already. :)

That's an awesome setup, sounds like a lot of fun to play with. I am still living in a 3D world over here! :)

Thanks. I've actually enjoyed making it - if anything, I did so to pickup some different skills that I could use elsewhere...

Are there other systems using tor, zerotier, or TLS? Cool to have such a variety of connection options.

There are. TQWnet mail transfers with the main hub are over zerotier, some nodes poll and collect mail over TLS and tor.

Australia's implementation of Videotex was similar to Minitel - probably more correctly similar to Prestel (the UK implementation).

While Videotex is Mode 7 graphics, 40x25, I've actually implemented "AnsiTex", the same user interface but with ANSI graphics 80x25. My current BBS (Synchronet) is using an AnsiTex shell that I've been dabling with over the years. It too is half baked (page, navigation and message reading works OK, but I need to write a frame and msg editor to make useful).

You can test with Hub 3 - just let me know and I'll enable your address to receive/send mail.

Be aware, Zmodem doesnt like uneven sides of a network pipe, and serial port buffers are smaller and empty slower than a TCP window. I wrote my Zmodem with the idea to control timings (so that it doesnt time out waiting for an ACK) and to use a smaller buffer size (so that faster side always has something to do before dying of boredom).

I need to surface this tuning items to the end user to see if it helps, but havent had anybody who needed it yet. So if you have timeout issues (and use Hub 3) let me know...

I quit doing this years back as FD over telnet had horrible Zmodem issues sometimes. It would just resend, resend, resend. Only reason is I got away from it was the bots killing me. So I went with the Net2BBS option and wrote my own blocking bot door to load before the BBS. Plus I also didn't have 4 nodes of FD weighing down resources for no reason waiting for a call.

... Which version of the truth would you prefer today?

I am interested in testing EMSI over telnet (and over modem), I have BinkleyTerm setup but haven't actually run mail through it.

I don't think I have ever had a session with BinkleyTerm, so that would be an interesting test.

One of these days I might try connecting to your system with mail if you don't mind me testing with your system.

By all means, test away. We should (theoretically) be able to send netmail back and forth with EMSI/Telnet as is.

If you do this, let me know your hostname and port so I can reply.

We could also setup a secure session to test echomail if you like. Let me know and we'll get it done.

I am connected at net 1, 3 and 4 for example. I forget
now why I did that but that is the way things have come

Do you send/receive mail through multiple nets? Any trouble with dupes?

When net 1 (or 3 or 4) sends out a message my node will be listed in the seenbys so the other nets won't send my node the message. If net 2 or 5 send out a message to the hubs my node will not be listed in the seenbys so I will get it from net 1, 3 and 4 (at least I should) so I do get a good number of dupes. The first message gets tossed as expected and the dupes are just dropped.

If you arrange things like this you want a tosser that handles dupes properly.

Yep, BBBS support Zmodem but I think it prefers Hydra if it's supported by the remote mailer.

I have not been able to use EMSI/Telnet with FD or MBSE but I have has success with other mailers.

these games reports seems to be posting OK to the stats echo along with the NET 4 stats. I can see an error in the NET 4 BinkP traffic (it's posting content twice)... also will need to separate out fileboxes further as the NET 4 data is now getting caught up in the NET 1 queue reports.. Gah.

Next steps .. tidy up the above issues, then looking to add NET 3 data to the FSX_STA echo based on what Deon is sending me each night for the website.

Also looking to start sending inter-bbs game stats info to fsxnet.nz as well.
