I maybe missing something here; I can't spot it. Then again, I am pretty fuzzy on all of the details of the story.

No smoke coming out the chimney?

Or the fact that "Not a creature was stirring", but there is a fire in the fireplace, and what looks like a cup of tea on the stool?

Nothing like that. However.. one might argue that the glow in
fireplace would be inconsistent for the safety of Santa to
descend down the chimney of the narrator's home. But we know
that Santa has magical abilities to hold his stomach in and
navigate creosote-laden chimneys with ease - but it's not that.

Hmmm.. something like that! ;) but not that. The cup on the
stool could be a remnant of the narrator's evening. We know he
was in bed at the start of the story.

But.. a couple of things in the images are still contraditory
    to the story.

You don't need to know the whole story, just what's written on
    those pages.

In the first illustration, the mouse is asleep.

In the second illustration, the mouse is awake and a cat is ready to
    pounce on it.

    Apparently, creatures are stirring.

Very good. That's it, a creature (just the cat) *is* stirring.

Actually.. there is one other thing in the first image.
