• Want some AWESOME flavoured Bacon!?

Find an old unopened bottle of Sriracha in your cabinet - you know, when it gets dark almost brown?

As you cook your bacon in the skillet on MED, squirt some on top and add some Dash Southwest Chipotle seasoning as well.

The bacon doesn't crisp up like I normally like it, but it is full of great flavouring .. you know, like when you use a beer can and pour it over the meat, and all that is left if mouthwatering awesomesauce? Yeah, like that!

I hear there might be some supply issues with Sriracha, so old bottles might be all people have, at the moment...

Hopefully they get it sorted, but I think it's something to do with a smaller pepper harvest causing problems.

The bacon doesn't crisp up like I normally like it, but it is full of great flavouring .. you know, like when you use a beer can and pour it

That does sound like a pleasant way to prepare it.

I'm vegetarian, though quite possible that it'd make the fake bacon taste better.

Though I'm also a spice wimp. Not sure how the rest of you manage to enjoy the super spicy things. I can really only get there with wasabi or ginger, which is a wildly different experience.

My wife went mostly vegetarian a couple of years ago, hasn't looked back.
She'll eat the random burger once a year or so.

I tried fakin-bacon, veggie burgers, tempeh burgers, impossible burgers
and sausages, and she's not liked most of them. She figures instead of
eating vegetables shaped like meat, she'll just stick to vegetables. I

I'll eat the fake bacon, but it's not _good_. I like Impossible burgers, though, and while I'm sure that all the super-processed stuff is not healthy, it's probably still healthier than keeping and establishing a colony of bacteria that feed on red meat and release nasty things into my bloodstream.

(Not that I'm objecting to what other people eat; my diet is awful. I will not judge people on their diets or choices, if they don't judge me on mine. Mind you, I'm _happy_ to have arguments over the proper way to prepare pies, or where the best cheese comes from (Wisconsin)).

eating vegetables shaped like meat, she'll just stick to vegetables. I
    can get behind that.

Yeah, reasonable enough. But I do enjoy eating the fake meats. If I had a burger-made-from-cow-flesh every so often, I might feel differently.

But most of the time I'm trying to find things to eat that taste decent enough and don't require much in the way of prep time, as I'd prefer to spend my productive time elsewhere.

Even though I have some ability to cook, especially after having gone to culinary school.

I'm a full on meat-eater. My son is lactose intolerant. My daughter is a picky eater, and my wife vegetarian. I'm the cook in the house and need

    That... sounds like a challenge.

About the worst I get is that sometimes I'm around vegans, and have to make various substitutions or exclusions to make it work.

Though happily, there, it's usually where the vegan is fine with eggs from the pet chickens that live there. And I find eggs to be the hardest thing to substitute in a way that I'm happy with, when used as a binder.

I wonder what they did to the salmon to make it so terrible.

Because, yeah, I've had a variety of alternative burgers, and some I like more than others.

I guess I don't have a whole lot of experience with salmon or turkey burgers, though.

Regardless, I imagine I wouldn't write off all of the non-cow-flesh burgers because of not liking one variety. Just seems like, "you smush stuff together, then cook it, then put it on a bun" means that the food science people have a lot they can work with.

And, heck, if people just want a ketchup-delivery vehicle (or the condiments of your choice, of course)...

Wait, pescatarian, or are you using the Catholic definition of "meat"?

I know that some people do that, and it confuses the heck out of me, since I have my hierarchy that makes a fair amount of sense.

    E.g.,
Meat-eater - Meat with every meal, it's not food if there's not animal flesh involved
Omnivore - Meat often, but not quite that extent.
Flexitarian - Meat sometimes, but will go multiple days without.
Pescatarian - Fish and seafood, but no beef/pork/poultry
Vegetarian - No fish or seafood, either, but will eat eggs, milk, honey
    Vegan - No animal products

And some will be more flexible than others. E.g., I try to avoid gelatin, but it pops up in surprising places, so I'm sure I consume it occasionally. Heck, I've had the occasional, "this is vegetarian" followed by, "no, this is chicken". Which I don't appreciate, but it hasn't been done in malice, so far as I know.

If it _is_ done in malice, then, whatever, I tried, and I can't make jerks be considerate.

Wait, pescatarian, or are you using the Catholic definition of "meat"?

Not really strict anything - she's vegetarian with the odd shrimp or
    fish a night a week.

We did a mono diet a while ago - ate nothing but potatoes for 3 weeks.
If you get hungry, you eat a potato. Ignore mealtimes, just eat a
potato if you're hungry. It helps break the habitual "It's 10:30am,
time for a pastry and coffee", "it's 12:00pm, time for lunch..."
aspect of food, and it helps you lose your taste for sugar - especially
    if you use artificial sweeteners.

After doing it, I think twice about habitual hunger and have stopped
those habits, and sugar tastes much more noticeable. Eating an ear of
corn without butter and spices tasted sweet to me.

After my wife did it, she just lost the taste for meat except for
    occasionally.

Meat-eater - Meat with every meal, it's not food if there's not animal flesh involved Omnivore - Meat often, but not quite that extent. Flexitarian - Meat sometimes, but will go multiple days without. Pescatarian - Fish and seafood, but no beef/pork/poultry

I like Flexitarian - that fits. She can go weeks on end without meat,
then order fish tacos, or I'll barbecue salmon along with the meat I'm
    cooking.

Someone once claimed to be pescapescatarian - they only ate fish that
ate a diet of other fishes.

Well, there is another category. Some of us don't eat pork products but are fine with other meats.

Yeah, certainly a variety of other options. E.g., Kosher, Halal, no-red-meat, no pork, etc.

When I went vegetarian, I first cut out beef, mostly because of reading about how a certain bacteria colonizes human intestines of those who frequently eat red meat, and that bacteria consumes the meat while releasing something nasty into the blood.

Though "red meat" also includes pork, I think, for this, so I probably should've cut out more, for that.

But the whole aspect of, "it's not just your body, it's all the bacteria that live in and on you" is fascinating, and in the case of red meat, a little bit scary.

You could also kind of "shoe-horn" that into those who observe the
Bible's Old Testament food laws as well (nothing unclean). Just an observation - for a friend, you know. :)

Makes sense. And, yeah, could probably also add "Catholic during Lent", and probably a variety of health conditions, etc.

(And hopefully this does not count as talking about religion; not meaning to talk about the religions; just diets. "Catholic during Lent" is kinda equivalent to "gluten free" or "vegetarian" for this discussion.)

I tend to have the bad habit of continuing to try things even after being quite certain that I do not like the things.

Yeah, _sometimes_ getting used to the flavor helps. E.g., when I learned to like raw onions on things, or getting used to green tea or sparkling water without sugar (or fake sugar, but I'd have to get used to fake sugar anyway, so hardly seems worth it.)

But mostly I do things like continue trying eating tomatoes, being told how wonderful they taste, and it's always wasted on me. On a burger, where I can mostly ignore it, I kinda like them, and they make great sauces.

But cherry tomatoes? I keep eating them, and still have no idea why people like them.

I think I might even try coconut occasionally, but I think people could put literal sawdust on things and I'm as likely to enjoy it as coconut shavings.

I can't stand raw onion or green tea, but sparkling water yea I can stomach a cup or two. I just don't like how it tastes like static

I think I might even try coconut occasionally, but I think people could put literal sawdust on things and I'm as likely to enjoy it as coconut

I honestly don't mind coconut, as long as its with something else.

I like raw onion and green tea, but I don't really like plain sparkling water (I tend to like it more if it has some flavoring).
I visited Germany in 1998, and it seems they really like sparkling/carbonated water there.. Pretty much all of the bottled water I saw in convenience stores & such was carbonated. I'd even seen a couple with a toddler in a stroller, and they gave their toddler some carbonated water.. I was relieved when we went into Switzerland for a few days and we found a convenience store there selling bottled non-carbonated water.

Yeah, adding salt generally does work as a flavor enhancer (though I _also_ rarely like salty as a flavor, so salty foods are only a temptation _in spite_ of the salty flavor.).

But it doesn't make tomatoes taste good enough that I like it.

What I'm still not entirely used to, is that "lemonade" in Germany is presumed to have sparkling water in it.

Which, with my American understanding of "lemonade" being what you get when you take lemon juice (fresh-squeezed or otherwise) and add sugar and still water, is a bit weird.

But, for the previous poster, I would be surprised if a convenience store had only sparkling water, at this point. Yeah, sparkling water is popular (and cheap), but getting it without the bubbles seems common.

But on that sort of note, I find it odd that flavored sparkling water is still fairly uncommon, here. Meaning the type that has sparkling water and flavoring, but no sweeteners, artificial or otherwise. Though it seems to be becoming less uncommon.

i live in @HU and lemonade for me is still sugar+lemon+still water, but not in the public places...
ah and my favorite is when the place has for example raspberry-lemonade and raspberry-syrup... and no one knows the difference ;)

Yeah. It can definitely be fun. And, in a previous space when I had more space than I do now, I had some tiles that lived inside of my oven, and a pizza peel, and would have fun using fairly-specific tools for the job.

I imagine a pizza peel must be useful for _something_ other than putting pizzas in and out, but not sure if I ever did use it for other things.

But probably would've been good for more than just getting _pizzas_ in and out.
