Winlink is the system. There's several different Winlink mail packages. I use Winlink Express (formerly RMS Express) to access Winlink mail. I have used it over radio in the past, but am currently using telnet to access my Winlink email.

Winlink works quite well. I've used the WINMOR modem/protocol successfully on links up to 4000km, but it's most reliable on the lower frequencies (40/80m) over the distances I want to achieve (100-400km). There was a naturalist field trip that I did when I was studying in 2012. The trip involved a week at a nature reserve in far western NSW, halfway between Wentworth and Broken Hill. Through Winlink, I was the only one who had reliable email (via Melbourne on 40m, 600-700 km away). Mobile coverage was nonexistent, and they only enable wifi intermittently.

Quite a few of the other students and even the teachers were impressed by my demonstration of modern HF data technology, then traditional HF voice from a remote location.

look at the bbs bpq32 supports winlink

is a mail system only for amateur radio

the problem with this system
is that an administrator has to register you especially to put a server

and it happens to make privative the use

The other disadvantage of this system is that the bbs have a private shipping system that does the same

like mystic you can send a message to everyone, to a special or private group

if inside any bbs you put sp lu9dce I get the message only to me

as if it were a winlink email

I do not see much sense in that system

The difference is you can send an email to me on Winlink from an ordinary Internet account (with a special tag in the subject line). AFAIK, you can't do that on a standard packet system. So I was literally able to send an email back home over HF from Winlink (which appears as a @winlink.org address).

Thoughts? It's cool as heck, but pretty restrictive and makes you jump through some hoops to use. When I leave my radio on the local packet freq, I see people using it daily. I tried it once but forgot my password and had to wait three months or whatever for the account to expire.

I'd say check it out if you have some kind of use for casual email without a bunch of personal information in it.

I played with it some time ago, it works pretty well in case you need to send a message to someone and you are off the grid.
I used it together with VARA modem and was able to use a winlink node that was thousand kilometers away using 40m band.

But, I didn't find use for it. Only other winlink users may send you an email unless you emailed the nonwinlink email first.
And it's quite slow and if you don't use is for a year or so, they will disable your account.

I've used it. Make sure to whitelist addresses outside of winlink you might email so their replies reach you.

... I didn't know it was impossible when I did it.

I use Winlink from time to time both over the internet and over hf.
Hf is slow and will work for you if you really need it.
There is also vhf operation that you can do as well.
Keep your e-mails text and things will work fine.

I've used it. Make sure to whitelist addresses outside of winlink you might email so their replies reach you.

You can whitelist domains as well if you want, but be careful how much mail you get.

Mostly I am a cw man, but I have messed around with winlink over hf and vhf a little.

And I'm pretty much anything but CW. But I saw this more advanced decoder/encoder that handles natural CW a lot better. Considering it as it would turn CW into another keyboard mode for me.

No one out here near me enough for winlink vhf but that must be nice to have all that bandwidth...

VARA was a pain to get working on linux. So I'm super interested in Mercury. Would love a less-fragile option.

sofar, wanted to try ARDOP or how is it called but wasn't able to configure it properly.

ARDOP was the only one I had working for a while. I was running Pat (w/ ARDOP) -> Rigctl (hamlib) -> Flrig (because it talks to some of my radios better than hamlib does).
