• Did anybody sleep well yesterday (July 4)?

    This 4th of July was rather forgiving to my sleep routine. Of corse, there were huge bombs that made me flinch a few times. But, I was able to sleep sound. The New Year celebrations are the worst to me. As an early riser, interruptions in the nite make me groggy the next morning. That means once the clock strikes midnite, I go to sleep pronto.

    So, how did yall sleep last nite? If the fireworks gave U a hard time, I kno the struggle :(

    It was a strange one, lot's of smaller booms/pops. It was all over by 10pm. Maybe because people had to work today (Friday), they kept things civil.

    Thankfully, I think anyone still lighting off explosives around my area stopped around midnight, so we were able to sleep.

    It was a lot here.
    There were several jarring mortars. We had some fans/AC running and that drowned out quite a bit and our cat seemed to do better than in past years.

    Yup. Noise or covering ears helps pets out. My family's dog has done better than our previous dogs. In fact, he fell asleep.

    I slept like a log.

    Mainly because the toilet kept filling since there seems to be a leak
    and it's a fancy dual flush so can't just put a weight on a rubber
    stopper. Finally got to bed about 4:30am after fusking with that.

    Been taking Melatonin a lot lately, and it helps a bunch!

    Never found it a lot of use myself, always found the need to take it 6 months in advance in order to get to sleep, and then only lasting a few hours :/ Temazepam was always good, but its only good for a week or so.

    I think there's been a bit of research done on melatonin, and when used on a daily basis it seemed to possibly help people get to sleep a few minutes earlier, but that's about it. And, I think, possibly comes with some possible negative side effects from prolonged use.

    But it works great for adjusting sleep schedules. So, when shifting lots of time zones, if I can get myself to mentally be okay with going to bed 5 hours earlier than I wanted to, and take melatonin, I'll actually manage to get to sleep earlier. And there's no chance at all that I would've been able to sleep like that without the melatonin.

    But, as with most things like this, whatever works for people.

    Hmm Dunno. The docs here tend not to want to prescribe benzos, so Temazepam
    has become hard to get a hold of, while they'll just about hand out packs of Melatonin. If you need a sledgehammer to change your sleeping patterns I
    would back in Temaz. My sleep patterns used to be all over the place from a combo of back pain + pain relief for the same. A couple of days of Temaz
    would beat it back into something normal until it drifted off again over
    time.

    There does seem to be some odd interactions out there. I know someone that
    is inclined to take anything he can get his hands on. Over a period of time I've no idea what he's taken, but it seems to have stopped Temaz working on
    him after being prescribed for sleep issues.

    of days to get in sync. Coming back wasn't bad, I left Heathrow at 12
    noon, got into San Francisco at 2:45pm (elapsed time for me, 10.5
    hours), stayed awake until 9:30pm and woke up at 4:30.

    Yeah, going east is pretty much always worse than going west.

    At least if you're like me, where it's not generally hard to stay up an extra couple of hours, but it's almost impossible to go to sleep a couple of hours earlier, without meds.

    And, going west, suddenly I'm a morning person for a little while, and that allows for some possibilities that I wouldn't normally have.

    But, yeah, I tend to take melatonin when on long flights, as it makes it easier to at least get some low-quality sleep, and it's common to be traveling during the time when one would be asleep at the destination.

    At least on the eastbound flights I can set my watch to the destination time zone and fake myself into sleeping a normal cycle. Coming back is like permanent twilight (or noon) and messes with me. I think I may have gotten 3o minutes of sleep coming back.

    Those days are _weird_.

    When I first was traveling from my place in Germany to a site in California, I had a day where I started at 1a or something, and arrived at my hotel at 6p, while gaining 9 time zones.

    And, with the plane, I left at 10a or so, and arrived at 2 or 3p. So it's a really trippy 33-hour day, where I'd spent 25+ hours traveling in a single day, most of it being daylight.

    Since realizing that the company only pays for 12 hours of travel a day (you're supposed to stop traveling, after that, I guess), I shifted to getting a hotel at the airport, rather than attempting to travel day-of.

    It's especially a good idea, because there is no possible way to arrive and _not_ be tired, while winding up driving for a couple of hours in LA-area traffic at the end of the journey.
