In 1821 A hurricane made landfall at Long Island, near Kennedy
Airport, then moved through western Connecticut. The
hurricane produced a record tide at New York City.
In 1953 The temperature at Erie PA reached 99 degrees,
and Stroudsburg PA established a state record
for September with a reading of 106 degrees.
In 1961 Denver CO received 4.2 inches of snow, their earliest
            snow of record.
In 1967 100+ mph winds drove golfball size hail across the Texas
Panhandle. One stone was 11" in circumference.
In 1970 During the early evening hours, in the midst of a severe
hailstorm at Coffeyville KS, a stone 17.5 inches in
circumference and nearly two pounds in weight was
recovered. It was the largest measured hailstone in U.S.
weather records. Average stone size from the storm was
five inches in diameter, with another stone reportedly
            eight inches in diameter.
In 1987 Temperatures dipped into the 40s and 50s for morning lows
across much of the eastern half of the country, with
eleven cities reporting record lows for the date.
Pellston MI tied Gunnison CO for honors as the cold spot
in the nation with a low of 30 degrees. Smoke from
forest fires darkened skies in southern Oregon
            and northern California.
In 1988 Sixteen cities in the northwestern U.S. reported record
high temperatures for the date. Highs of 89 degrees
at Stampede Pass WA and 116 at Redding CA established
records for the month of September. Readings of 98 at
Spokane WA and 100 at Yakima WA equalled records for
            September.
In 1989 Thunderstorms developing ahead of a cold front produced
severe weather from Minnesota to Nebraska during the day
and evening. Evening thunderstorms in Nebraska produced
wind gusts to 100 mph at Valentine and Gretna, and
produced baseball size hail at Lewellen. Thunderstorms
in Arizona produced 2.20 inches of rain in forty minutes
at Green Valley, and wind gusts to 60 mph. Eight cities
in Texas and Florida reported record high temperatures
for the date, including Victoria TX and San Antonio TX
            with readings of 102 degrees.

weather history, go to the National Climate Data Center
    website at www.ncdc.noaa.gov
In 1939 A thunderstorm deluged Washington D.C. with 4.4 inches of
rain in two hours. September of that year was very dry
across much of the nation, and Washington D.C. received
more rain in that two hour period than most other places
in the country that entire month.
In 1970 The greatest natural disaster of record for Arizona
occurred. Unprecedented rains caused rivers in central
Arizona to rise five to ten feet per hour, sweeping cars
and buildings as far as 30 to 40 miles downstream.
Flooding claimed the lives of 23 persons, mainly campers,
and caused millions of dollars damage. Water crested 36
feet above normal near Sunflower AZ. Workman's Creek was
deluged with 11.40 inches of rain in 24 hour to establish
a state record. Moisture from Pacific Tropical Storm
Norma led to the severe flooding. (4th-6th)
In 1986 An unusually strong dust devil moved across the Flagstaff
Pulliam Airport. The dust devil blew open the doors of
the National Weather Service office scattering papers and
bringing down a ceiling-mounted light fixture.
In 1987 Thunderstorms developing along a stationary front
produced heavy rain across the Southern Atlantic Coast
States. Up to eight inches was reported north of
Charleston SC. Serious flooding was reported in Monks
Corner SC. Seven cities in the northeastern U.S.
reported record low temperatures for the date.
Houlton ME dipped to 32 degrees.
In 1988 The western U.S. experienced another day of record heat.
The afternoon high of 91 degrees at Stampede Pass WA
established an all-time record for that location, and Los
Angeles CA equalled their all-time record high with a
reading of 110 degrees. The record high of 107 degrees
at San Diego CA was their hottest reading in 25 years.
Red Bluff CA was the hot spot in the nation with an
            afternoon high of 118 degrees.
In 1989 Overnight thunderstorm rains of four and a half to seven
inches drenched eastern Nebraska during the morning
hours, pushing creeks out of their banks, and flooding
fields, country roads and city streets. Totals ranged up
to 6.97 inches south of Creston. It was also a soggy
Labor Day for northern Florida, with 6.82 inches of rain
reported at Jacksonville. Evening thunderstorms produced
2.75 inches of rain in one hour at Sandlewood FL.
In 2010 After being as strong as a category 4 hurricane with 145
winds a few days earlier...Tropical Storm Earl with 70
mph winds, extending out 205 miles from the center, came
ashore near Western Head Nova Scotia...producing a wide
area of tropical storm force winds and flooding rain.
In 2012 Strong winds from a Bering Sea storm impacted portions of
southern Alaska, from the Aleutians to south-central
Alaska, Tuesday evening through the overnight hours. Winds
of 50-60 mph were prevalent in Anchorage, with gusts to
over 100 mph observed just east of Anchorage in the higher
            elevations.

In 1925 The temperature at Centerville AL soars to 112 degrees to
establish a state record. Every reporting station in
Alabama was 100 degrees or above that afternoon.
In 1933 A hurricane hit Brownsville TX killing forty persons and
            causing 12 million dollars damage.
In 1950 Hurricane Easy produced the greatest 24 hour rainfall in
U.S. weather records. The hurricane deluged Yankeetown,
on the upper west coast of Florida, with 38.7 inches of
            rain.
In 1975 Strong winds reduced visibilities to near zero in blowing
dust resulting in a 22-car chain reaction accident on
Interstate 10 near Toltec AZ. Two persons were killed,
            and 14 others were injured.
In 1987 Thunderstorms over the Southern and Middle Atlantic Coast
States drenched Charleston SC with 5.50 inches of rain,
and a total of 13.50 inches in two days, flooding homes,
and leaving roads and bridges under water. A tropical storm
which formed off the Carolina coast was responsible for
torrential rains over coastal regions of South Carolina.
Between the 30th of August and the 8th of September,
Charleston SC received 18.44 inches of rain. The heavy rains
caused extensive flooding around the city of Charleston,
seriously damaged cotton crops in the eastern part of the
state, and resulted in an unusally high number of mosquitoes.
In 1988 Five days of heavy rain commenced in west central
Florida. Up to 20 inches of rain in four days resulted
in extensive urban flooding, and evacuation of 1000
homes. Flooding claimed four lives, and caused more than
            five million dollars proprty damage.
In 1989 Thunderstorms produced six to ten inches of rain in south
central Kansas between 6 AM and Noon. Serious flooding
was reported around Wichita, with water four feet deep
along some roads. A cold front crossing the Northern
High Plains Region produced wind gusts to 63 mph at
            Sheridan WY.
In 2003 Hurricane Fabian hit Bermuda as a category 3 hurricane,
the strongest hurricane to hit there in decades, with
120 mph winds. The Bermuda Weather Service reported an
unofficial observation of 117 mph sustained winds, with
gusts to 127 mph. The Bermuda Airport reported sustained
winds of 103 mph, with gusts to 132 mph. Elsewhere,
Typhpoon Dujan slammed into the southern Chinese coastal
city of Shenzhen, killing at least 20 people, and causing
extensive damage to parts of the country's showcase
economic development zone. Of the 20 fatalities, 16 were
killed when a workers dormitory collapsed, and at least
20 others were injured. It was the worst damage to that
damage to that region since 1979.
In 2017 Hurricane Irma became the most powerful hurricane in the
Atlantic Basin, outside of the Caribbean and Gulf Of Mexico
with 185 mph winds. She became only the 5th Atlantic Basin
            Hurricane with a peak wind speed of 180 mph or greater;
the others were Allen (1980), the Labor Day Hurricane of
1935, Gilbert (1988), and Wilma (2005). She also set the
record for being the strongest for so long a period of
time...185 mph winds for 35 straight hours. On Sept. 9,
the entire Florida peninsula, plus the central and eastern
Florida panhandle, were under a Hurricane Warning, with
part of the western Florida panhandle under a Tropical
Storm Warning...and only the extreme western Florida
panhandle not under either one of those (5th-9th).

In 1881 Forest fires in Michigan and Ontario resulted in 'Yellow
Day' in the northeastern U.S. Twenty villages in
Michigan burned, and a total of 500 persons were killed.
Fires caused 2.3 million dollars in losses near Lake
Huron. Candles were needed at the noon hour.
In 1929 Iowa's earliest snow of record occurred as a few flakes
were noted at 9 AM at Alton.
In 1987 Heavy rainfall led to a mudslide which engulfed a mountain
road in Venezuela. 200 were killed as mud swamped their
cars. Thunderstorms produced more than seven inches of rain
in Georgia. Four persons drowned, and two others suffered
injury, as three couples attempted to cross Mills Stone
Creek at Echols Mill in their automobile. Smoke from
forest fires in California and Oregon spread across Utah
            into western Colorado.
In 1988 Unseasonably cool weather prevailed across the north
central and northeastern U.S. Thirty cities reported
record low temperatures for the date, including Saint
Joseph MO with a reading of 38 degrees. A low of 44 at
Indianapolis IN was their coolest reading of record for
so early in the season. The mercury dipped to 31 degrees
at Hibbing MN and Philips WI.
In 1989 An early afternoon thunderstorm produced wind gusts to
104 mph at Winterhaven FL flipping over four airplanes,
and damaging five others. The high winds also damaged a
hangar and three other buildings. A cold front produced
strong winds and blowing dust in the Northern High
Plains, with gusts to 54 mph reported at Buffalo SD.
Powerful Hurricane Gabrielle and strong easterly winds
combined to create waves up to ten feet high along the
south half of the Atlantic coast.
In 2012 Hurricane Michael, in the Atlantic Basin, became a
hurricane...the third earliest formation of the seventh
            hurricane in a year...only behind 1886 and 1893.

In 1881 The temperature soared to 101 degrees at New York City,
102 degrees at Boston MA, and 104 degrees at Washington D.C.
In 1888 Much of the Middle and Northern Atlantic Coast Region
            experienced freezing temperatures. Killer frosts
resulted in a million dollars damage to crops in Maine.
In 1909 Topeka KS was drenched with 8.08 inches of rain in
24 hours to establish a record for that location. (6th-7th)
In 1970 A lightning bolt struck a group of football players at
Gibbs High School in Saint Petersburg FL, killing two
persons and injuring 22 others. All the thirty-eight
players and four coaches are knocked off their feet.
In 1987 Showers and thunderstorms produced 4 to 8 inch rains in
three to six hours in Virginia, with totals across the
state for the Labor Day weekend ranging up to fourteen
inches. The Staunton River crested at 34.44 feet at
Altavista on the 8th, its highest level since 1940.
Damage due to flooding was estimated at seven million
dollars in Bedford, Henry, and Franklin.
In 1988 Fifty cities across the eastern U.S. reported record low
temperatures for the date. The low of 56 degrees at

Colorado produced golf ball size hail at Clear Creek and
at Nederland. Late evening thunderstorms in Iowa
drenched Harlan with more than four inches of rain.
In 2002 Tropical Storm Fay came ashore at Matagorda Bay, Texas,
producing flooding rains and several tornadoes.
In 2012 (7th-8th) A line of severe thunderstorms associated with
a cold front sweeping across Arkansas, brought widespread
damage, in the form of damaging winds (one home weather
measured gusts near 85 mph), hail (up to baseball size in
in some cases), and nearly continuous lightning. From 3pm
Sept. 7 to 5am Sept. 8, there were approximately 53,000
cloud to ground lightning strikes in Arkansas. Between
            8pm and 9pm Sept. 7, approximately 12,200 lightning
            strikes occurred...averaging over 200 strikes a minute!!
In 2020 Tropical Storms Paulette and Rene form over the eastern
Atlantic...the earliest named P and R storms in the
            Atlantic basin.

In 1900 The greatest weather disaster in U.S. records occurred
when a hurricane struck Galveston TX. A tide fifteen
feet high washed over the island demolishing or carrying
away buildings, and drowning more than 6000 persons. The
hurricane destroyed more than 3600 houses, and total
damage was more than thirty million dollars. Winds to
120 mph, and a twenty foot storm surge accompanied the
hurricane. Following the storm, the surf was 300 feet
inland from the former water line. The hurricane claimed
another 1200 lives outside of the Galveston area. (8th-
            9th)
In 1987 A tropical depression off the coast of South Carolina
brought another round of heavy rain to the Middle
Atlantic Coast Region and the Upper Ohio Valley. Showers
and thunderstorms produced extremely heavy rain in
eastern Pennsylvania, where flooding caused more than
55 million dollars damage across a seven county area. The
afternoon high of 97 degrees at Miami FL was a record for
            the month of September.
In 1988 Eighteen cities in the south central and eastern U.S.
reported record low temperatures for the date, including
Roanoke VA with a reading of 42 degrees.
In 1989 Thunderstorms developing along a stationary front
produced very heavy rain in the central U.S. Thunder-
storms during the late morning and afternoon produced
5 to 9 inches of rain around Lincoln NE, with an
unofficial total of eleven inches near Holmes Park.
Up to six and a half inches of rain soaked northern and
western Iowa. Eighty to ninety percent of the homes in
Shenandoah IA, where 5.89 inches of rain was received,
            reported basement flooding.
In 2012 Severe weather barreled across the northeast US and
mid-Atlantic as a powerful cold front brought heavy rain,
high winds, and at least one tornado into a beachfront
neighborhood of New York City. A watersport with 70 mph
winds became a tornado when it came ashore at Breezy
Point, a Queens neighborhood on the western edge of the
Rockaway Peninsula. The tornado spiraled a mixture of
sand and debris, which was largely flung onto a nearby
baseball field. A second confirmed tornado touched down
in Brooklyn...rated an EF1 on the Enhanced Fujita scale.
Tornado watches and warnings were in effect for much of
of the day across parts of New York, New Jersey, and
Connecticut. The severe weather even forced the U.S.
Open men's and women's singles tennis matches in
Flushing Meadows, to be rescheduled to the next day.
Elsewhere, 65,000 people were without power in the
Washington, DC area, and surrounding areas. And, twelve
people were injured as they tried to evacuate Show Place
Arena, 20 miles east of Washington, DC, in Maryland.
In 2014 Moisture from the remnants of Hurricane Norbert in the
Eastern Pacific basin, dropped 3.30 inches of rain at
Phoenix, AZ...the most rain in one day, since records began
            in 1895.

In 1815 One of the greatest hurricanes to strike New England made
landfall at Long Island and crossed Massachusetts and New
Hampshire. It was the worst tempest in nearly two
hundred years, equal to the hurricane which struck in
1938, and one of a series of severe summer and autumn
storms to affect shipping lanes that year.
In 1904 The temperature at Charlotteburg NJ dipped to 23 degrees,
the coldest reading of record for so early in the autumn
            for the state.
In 1983 A thunderstorm downburst caused a timber blowdown in the
Kaibab National Forest north of the Grand Canyon. 200
acres were completely destroyed, and scattered
destruction occurred across another 3300 acres. Many
trees were snapped off at 15 to 30 feet above ground
            level.
In 1987 Autumn began on a rather pleasant note for much of the
nation. Showers and thunderstorms were confined to
Florida and the southwestern deserts. Warm weather
continued in the western U.S., and began to spread into
the Great Plains Region, but even in the southwestern
deserts readings remained below 100 degrees.
In 1988 Thunderstorms developing along a cold front in the south
central U.S. produced severe weather in Oklahoma during
the afternoon and early evening hours. Thunderstorms
produced softball size hail near Noble and Enterprise,
and baseball size hail at Lequire and Kinta. A tornado
near Noble OK destroyed a mobile home injuring one
            person.
In 1989 Seventeen cities in the north central U.S. reported
record low temperatures for the date, including Devils
Lake ND with a reading of 22 degrees. Jackson KY
reported a record low of 41 degrees during the late
afternoon. Strong northwest winds ushering cold air into
the central and northeastern U.S. gusted to 55 mph at
Indianapolis IN. Winds along the cold front gusted to 65
mph at Norfolk VA, and thunderstorms along the cold front
deluged Roseland NJ with 2.25 inches of rain in one hour.
The temperature at Richmond VA plunged from 84 degrees to
54 degrees in two hours. Snow and sleet was reported at
            Binghamton NY.

In 1926 The temperature at Yellowstone Park dipped to nine
degrees below zero. It was the coldest reading of record
in the U.S. during September. Severe freezes were
widespread over the northwestern U.S. causing great crop
destruction. Spokane County WA experienced their
earliest snow of record. Harney Branch Experiment
Station in Oregon reported a temperature of 2 degrees
above zero to establish a state record for the month of
            September.
In 1950 A smoke pall from western Canada forest fires covered
much of the eastern U.S. Daylight was reduced to
nighttime darkness in parts of the Northeast. The color
of the sun varied from pink to purple, blue, or lavendar.
Yellow to grey-tan was common. (24th-30th)
In 1972 Lightning struck a man near Waldport OR. The young
man happened to be carrying thirty-five pieces
of dynamite. A late evening thunderstorm produced
downburst winds at Bismarck ND estimated at 125 to 150 mph.
In 1987 The first full day of autumn proved to be a pleasant one
for much of the nation, with sunny skies and mild
temperatures. Thunderstorms again formed over Florida
and the southwestern deserts, and also formed along a
cold front in the northeastern U.S. A storm spotter at
Earp CA sighted a couple of funnel clouds, one on the
California side of the state line, and the other on the
            Arizona side.
In 1988 Thunderstorms developing along a stationary front
produced large hail and damaging winds in the
southeastern U.S., with reports of severe weather most
numerous in North Carolina. Golf ball size hail was
reported at Tick Creek and a number of other locations in
            North Carolina.
In 1989 Forty-seven cities between the Rockies and the
Appalachians reported record low temperatures for the
date. Lows of 38 at Abilene TX, 34 at Jackson KY, and 36
at Midland TX established records for the month of
September. The low of 36 degrees at Midland smashed
their previous record for the date by thirteen degrees.
Fayetteville AR and Springfield MO reported their
earliest freeze of record. Thunderstorms produced
torrential rains in northeastern Florida. Jacksonville was
deluged with 11.40 inches of rain, and flash flooding
            resulted in two deaths.
In 2001 An F-3 tornado struck the University Of Maryland campus at
College Park, Maryland. Two sisters were killed when their
car went airborne from the tornado. Over 50 were injured,
and many other vehicles and buildings had their windows
blown out, or suffered other damage. It was the deadliest
tornado to strike the Baltimore/Washington area since 1929,
and Maryland's first September killer tornado. Tornadoes
also struck Culpepper County, Virginia, causing damage.

In 1836 The first of three early season snows brought four inches
of snow to Hamilton NY, and two inches to Ashby MA.
In 1893 Albuquerque NM was soaked with 2.25 inches of rain,
enough to establish a 24 hour record for that city.
In 1917 A hurricane hit Pensacola FL. Winds gusted to 95 mph,
and the barometric pressure dipped to 28.50 inches.
Winds at Mobile AL gusted to 75 mph.
In 1986 A flash flood victim in HI held onto a branch awaiting
help, while the current stripped him of his clothes and
            watch!
In 1987 Thunderstorms produced up to ten inches of rain in
southern Kansas and north central Oklahoma overnight.
The Chikaskia River rose 2.5 feet above flood stage at
Blackwell OK during the day causing flooding in Kay and
Grant counties of north central Oklahoma. Early morning
thunderstorms in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas
produced 3.07 inches of rain in six hours at McAllen.
Thunderstorms produced up to six inches of rain in
southeastern Texas later in the day.
In 1988 Thunderstorms developing ahead of a cold front in the
central U.S. produced severe weather from northern Texas
to the Lower Missouri Valley during the late afternoon
and evening hours. Hail three inches in diameter was
reported at Nolan TX, and wind gusts to 80 mph were
reported at Lawrence KS. Thunderstorms drenched downtown
Kansas City MO with up to four inches of rain, leaving
some cars stranded in water six feet deep.
In 1989 Thunderstorms over northeastern Florida drenched
Jacksonville with 4.28 inches of rain between midnight
and 6 AM EDT. Unseasonably cool weather prevailed in the
northeastern U.S. Five cities reported record low
temperatures for the date, including Binghamton NY with
a reading of 30 degrees. Morning lows were in the 20s in
northern New England. Unseasonably mild weather
prevailed in the northwestern U.S., with afternoon highs
in the upper 70s and 80s. Astoria OR reported a record
            high of 83 degrees.
In 2003 Hurricane Juan, with 80 mph winds, made landfall 30 miles
southwest of Halifax, Nova Scotia...producing a 3 to 5 foot
storm surge along the Nova Scotia coast.
In 2022 Hurricane Ian, after pummeling western Cuba days before,
made landfall just south of Punta Gorda, Florida with
145 mph winds. Hundreds of fatalities resulted, many
roads were washed out, power was lost to over 2 million
people, there was widespread flooding (some major or
record), and several tornadoes. Ian weakened to a
tropical storm over Florida, but became a hurricane again
before making landfall in South Carolina on Sep. 29.

In 1927 An outbreak of tornadoes from Oklahoma to Indiana caused
81 deaths and 25 million dollars damage. A tornado
(possibly two tornadoes) cut an eight-mile long path
across Saint Louis MO, to Granite City IL, killing 79
persons. The damage path at times was a mile and a
quarter in width. The storm followed a similar path to
tornadoes which struck in 1871, 1896, and 1959.
In 1938 5 tornadoes hit the Charleston SC area, damaging Market
and Broad Streets. 27 people died and 80 were injured.
In 1959 A storm produced 28 inches of snow at Colorado Springs CO.
In 1983 Heavy rains began in central and eastern Arizona which
culminated in the worst flood in the history of the
state. Eight to ten inch rains across the area caused
severe flooding in southeastern Arizona which resulted in
thirteen deaths and 178 million dollars damage.
President Reagan declared eight counties of Arizona to be
            disaster areas.
In 1986 A week of violent weather began in Oklahoma which
culminated in one of the worst flooding events in the
history of the state. On the first day of the week early
morning thunderstorms caused more than a million dollars
damage in south Oklahoma City. Thunderstorms produced 4
to 7 inches of rain from Hobart to Ponca City, and
another round of thunderstorms that evening produced 7 to
10 inches of rain in north central and northeastern
            sections of Oklahoma.
In 1987 A slow moving cold front produced rain from the Great
Lakes Region to the Central Gulf Coast Region. A late
afternoon thunderstorm produced wind gusts to 62 mph at
Buffalo NY. Warm weather continued in the western U.S.
The afternoon high of 96 degrees at Medford OR was a
            record for the date.
In 1988 High pressure brought freezing temperatures to parts
of Vermont. Burlington VT dipped to 30 degrees, and
Binghamton NY reported a record low of 34 degrees. High
pressure also brought cold weather to the Central Rocky
Mountain Region. Alamosa CO reported a record low of 18
degrees, and Gunnison CO was the cold spot in the nation
with a morning low of just five degrees above zero.
In 1989 Seven cities reported record high temperatures for the
date, as readings soared into the 80s and low 90s in the
Northern Plateau and Northern Plains Region. Record
highs included 91 degrees at Boise ID and 92 degrees at
Sheridan WY. The high of 100 degrees at Tucson AZ marked
their 51st record high of the year, and their 92nd day of
            100 degree weather.
In 2002 Just 9 days after being deluged by Tropical Storm Isidore,
Tropical Storm Lili brought more heavy rain and flooding
            to Jamaica.

In 1959 Three tornadoes spawned by the remnants of Hurricane
Gracie killed 12 persons at Ivy VA.
In 1970 A nineteen month drought in southern California came to
a climax. The drought, which made brush and buildings
tinder dry, set up the worst fire conditions in
California history as hot Santa Ana winds sent the
temperature soaring to 105 degrees at Los Angeles, and to
97 degrees at San Diego. During that last week of
September whole communities of interior San Diego County
were consumed by fire. Half a million acres were burned,
and the fires caused 50 million dollars damage.
In 1976 Hurricane Liza, with peak winds of 130 mph, sideswiped
the southeast coast of Mexico's Baja California.
In 1977 The temperature at Wichita Falls TX soared to 108 degrees
to establish a record for September.
In 1986 Thunderstorms, which had inundated northern sections of
Oklahoma with heavy rain, temporarily shifted southward
producing 4 to 8 inches rains from Shawnee to Stilwell.
Baseball size hail and 80 mph winds ripped through parts
of southeast Oklahoma City, and thunderstorm winds caused
more than half a million dollars damage at Shawnee.
In 1987 Afternoon thunderstorms in Michigan produced hail an inch
in diameter at Pinckney, and wind gusts to 68 mph at
Wyandotte. A thunderstorm in northern Indiana produced
wet snow at South Bend. Seven cities in the northwestern
U.S. reported record high temperatures for the date,
including readings of 98 degrees at Medford OR and 101
            degrees at downtown Sacramento CA.
In 1988 Unseasonably warm weather prevailed over Florida, and in
the western U.S. The afternoon high of 94 degrees at
Fort Myers FL was their tenth record high for the month.
Highs of 98 at Medford OR and 99 at Fresno CA were
records for the date, and the temperature at Borrego
Springs CA soared to 108 degrees.
In 1989 Thirteen cities reported record high temperatures for the
date, as readings soared into the upper 80s and 90s from
the Northern and Central High Plains Region to Minnesota.
Bismarck ND reported a record high of 95 degrees.
Broadus MT reached 97 degrees. Afternoon thunderstorms
developing along a cold front produced wind gusts to 60
            mph at Wendover UT.
In 2015 It proved to be a dry September in much of Arkansas,
especially in central and south Arkansas. Only .03" was
measured in Pine Bluff, .04" at El Dorado, and .12" at
Little Rock...the latter being the driest September on
            redord, dating back to 1874.

In 1752 The second severe hurricane in two weeks hit the
Carolinas. The Onslow County Courthouse was destroyed
along with all its records, and Beacon Island
            disappeared.
In 1893 The second great hurricane of the 1893 season hit
the Mississippi Delta Region drowning more than
            1000 persons.
In 1977 After yesterday's monthly record high of 108 degrees,
Wichita Falls, Texas, cooled today with a high of 87.
In 1987 A blast of cold arctic air hit the north central U.S.
An afternoon thunderstorm slickened the streets of Duluth
MN with hail and snow, and later in the afternoon, strong
northerly winds reached 70 mph. Unseasonably warm
weather continued in the Pacific northwest. Highs of 90
at Olympia WA, 92 at Portland OR, and 89 at Seattle WA,
were records for October. For Seattle WA it marked the
twenty-first daily record high for the year, a record
            total in itself.
In 1988 Afternoon and evening thunderstorms produced severe
weather across central Oklahoma and the eastern half of
Texas. Thunderstorms in Texas produced softball size
hail northwest of Nocona, and baseball size hail at Troy
            and Park Springs.
In 1989 Thunderstorms produced severe weather in the southeastern
U.S. through the daytime and evening hours. Severe
thunderstorms spawned eleven tornadoes, with seven of
those tornadoes in Georgia. A tornado southwest of
Moultrie GA killed two persons and injured a dozen
others. Tornadoes also injured one person north of
Graceville FL, and two persons at Bartow GA.

In 1944 The "Great Atlantic Hurricane" ravaged the east coast.
The storm killed 22 persons and caused 63 million dollars
damage in the Chesapeake Bay area, then besieged New
England killing 390 persons and causing another 100
            million dollars damage.
In 1971 Hurricane Ginger formed, and remained a hurricane until
the 5th of October. The 27 day life span was the longest
of record for any hurricane in the North Atlantic Ocean.
In 1987 Thunderstorms produced severe weather in the central U.S.
Thunderstorms in West Texas spawned four tornadoes in the
vicinity of Lubbock, and produced baseball size hail and
wind gusts to 81 mph at Ropesville. Thunderstorms
produced hail two inches in diameter at Downs KS and
Harvard NE, breaking car windows at Harvard.
In 1988 Florence became a hurricane and headed for the Central
Gulf Coast Region. Florence made landfall early the next
morning, passing over New Orleans LA. Winds gusts to 80
mph were recorded at an oil rig south of the Chandeleur
Islands. Wind gusts around New Orleans reached 61 mph.
Total property damage from Florence was estimated at 2.5
            million dollars.
In 1989 The first snow of the season began to whiten the
mountains of Wyoming early in the morning, as for two
days a moist and unusually cold storm system affected the
state. By the morning of the 11th, a foot of snow
covered the ground at Burgess Junction. Thunderstorms
developing along a cold front crossing the Ohio Valley
produced severe weather in Indiana during the late
afternoon and early evening hours. Strong thunderstorm
winds blew down a tent at Palestine injuring seven
persons, and frequent lightning interrupted the Purdue
and Miami of Ohio football game, clearing the stands.
In 2009 Hurricane Fred became the second major hurricane of the
season; but what was unusual was that Fred was only the
third major hurricane noted east of 35 degrees west
longitude in the Tropical Atlantic Ocean...and the
strongest hurricane ever so far south and east. This
type of system would have been very difficult to
accurately observe before satellite pictures began in
            the 1960s.

In 1919 A hurricane struck the Florida Keys drowning more than
            500 persons.
In 1960 Hurricane Donna struck the Florida Keys, with winds
gusting to 180 mph and a thirteen foot storm surge. The
hurricane then moved north along the eastern coast of
Florida and inundated Naples before moving out to sea.
Hurricane Donna claimed 50 lives, injured 1800 others,
and caused more than 300 million dollars damage. The
Marathon/Tavernier area was almost completely destroyed,
and in the Citrus Belt, most of the avacado crop was
blown from the trees. Hurricane Donna wreaked havoc from
Florida to Maine, with wind gusts to 100 mph along much
of the coast. Hurricane Donna produced wind gusts to 121
mph at Charleston SC on the 11th, and wind gusts to 138
mph at Blue Hill Observatory MA on the 12th. The
hurricane finally died over Maine two days later,
producing more than five inches of rain over the state.
In 1976 Kathleen was the first tropical cyclone to hit southern CA
since 1939, its 6' high wall of water destroyed 70% of homes.
In 1987 A late afternoon thunderstorm roared through Austin TX
producing wind gusts to 81 mph and 2.17 inches of rain in
just sixty minutes. The high winds toppled six National
Guard helicopters at the Robert Mueller Municipal
Airport, and damaged or destroyed numerous other
            aircraft.
In 1988 Cool air sweeping into the north central U.S. brought
snow to some of the higher elevations of Montana.
The town of Kings Hill, southeast of Great Falls, was
blanketed with six inches of snow. Tropical Storm
Gilbert strenghtened to a hurricane over the eastern
            Carribean.
In 1989 Light snow fell in Montana overnight, with three inches
reported at Fairfield. Billings MT reported a record low
of 33 degrees. Unseasonably warm weather prevailed in
the northeastern U.S., with record highs of 86 degrees at
Caribou ME and 90 degrees at Burlington VT.

In 1949 An early snowstorm brought 7.5 inches to Helena MT.
In Maine, a storm drenched New Brunswick with 8.05 inches
of rain in 24 hours, a state record.
In 1961 Very large and slow moving Hurricane Carla made landfall
near Port Lavaca TX. Carla battered the central Texas
coast with wind gusts to 175 mph, and up to 16 inches of
rain, and spawned a vicious tornado which swept across
Galveston Island killing eight persons. The hurricane
claimed 45 lives, and caused 300 million dollars damage.
The remnants of Carla produced heavy rain in the Lower
Missouri Valley and southern sections of the Upper Great
            Lakes Region.
In 1965 Hurricane Betsy reached southern Arkansas, then weakened
as it moved across southern and eastern sections. Winds
of 50-70 mph were common, with 2-6 inches of rain.
In 1976 Up to five inches of rain brought walls of water and
millions of tons of debris into Bullhead City AZ via
washes from elevations above 3000 feet. Flooding caused
more than three million dollars damage. Chasms up to
forty feet deep were cut across some roads.
In 1986 Thunderstorms caused flash flooding and subsequent river
flooding in central Lower Michigan. Up to 14 inches of
rain fell in a 72 hour period, and flooding caused 400
            million dollars damage.
In 1987 Late afternoon and evening thunderstorms produced large
hail and damaging winds in Texas, and spawned three
tornadoes. Thunderstorm winds gusted to 70 mph at
            Goodnight TX.
In 1988 Snow blanketed parts of the Central Rocky Mountain Region
and the Central Plateau, with ten inches reported at
Mount Evans CO. Smoke from forest fires in the
northwestern U.S. reached Pennsylvania and New York
State. Hurricane Gilbert, moving westward over the
Carribean, was packing winds of 100 mph by the end of the
            day.
In 1989 Nine cities in the north central U.S. reported record low
temperatures for the date, including Havre MT with a
reading of 23 degrees. Livingston MT and West
Yellowstone MT tied for honors as the cold spot in the
nation with morning lows of 17 degrees. Thunderstorms
produced hail over the Sierra Nevada Range of California,
with two inches reported on the ground near Donner
Summit. The hail made roads very slick, resulting in a
            twenty car accident.
In 1992 The eye of Hurricane Iniki tracked across western Kauai HI,
stranding Steven Spielberg and the film crew of Jurassic
            Park.
In 2013 Humberto became the first hurricane in the Atlantic Basin
for season. It tied for the latest forming first hurricane
            with Hurricane Gustav in 2002.
In 2014 An inch of snow fell at Rapid City, SD, with up to 8 inches
in surrounding areas. This was the earliest measurable snow
on record (since 1888), and was 2 days sooner than the
previous record, set on Sept. 13, 1970.

In 1882 Hot and dry winds caused tree foliage in eastern Kansas
            to wither and crumble.
In 1977 Thunderstorms deluged the Kansas City area with
torrential rains in the early morning hours, and then
again that evening. Some places were deluged with more
than six inches of rain twice that day, with up to
18 inches of rain reported at Independence MO. Flooding
claimed the lives of 25 persons. The Country Club Plaza
area was hardest hit. 2000 vehicles had to be towed
following the storm, 150 of which had to be pulled out of
Brush Creek, which runs through the Plaza area.
In 1979 Hurricane Frederick smashed into the Mobile Bay area of
Alabama packing 132 mph winds. Winds gusts to 145 mph
were reported as the eye of the hurricane moved over
Dauphin Island AL, just west of Mobile. Frederick
produced a fifteen foot storm surge near the mouth of
Mobile Bay. The hurricane was the costliest in U.S.
history causing 2.3 billion dollars damage.
In 1987 Showers and thunderstorms produced heavy rain which
caused flooding in North Carolina, West Virginia,
Virginia and Pennsylvania. Parts of Virginia received 3
to 4 inches of rain in just two hours early in the day.
Later in the day, 3 to 5 inch rains deluged Cumberland
County of south central Pennsylvania. Evening
thunderstorms produced seven inches of rain at Marysville
PA, most of which fell in three hours time.
In 1988 An afternoon thunderstorm spawned a tornado which skipped
across northern sections of Indianapolis IN damaging
roofs and automobiles. It was the first tornado in
central Indiana in September in nearly forty years of
records. Hurricane Gilbert plowed across the island of
Jamaica, and by the end of the day was headed for the
Cayman Islands, packing winds of 125 mph.
In 1989 Snow whitened the mountains and foothills of northeast
Colorado, with eight inches reported at Buckhorn
Mountain, west of Fort Collins. Two to three inches fell
around Denver, causing great havoc during the evening
rush hour. Thunderstorms produced severe weather in the
Southern Plains Region between mid afternoon and early the
next morning. Thunderstorms produced hail three inches in
diameter at Roswell NM, and wind gusts greater than
98 mph at Henryetta OK. Thunderstorms also produced
torrential rains, with more than seven inches at Scotland
TX, with more than six inches at Yukon OK.
In 1999 Hurricane Floyd, with 150 mph winds, covered much of the
Atlantic Ocean, just off the Florida Coast.
In 2002 Santaquin, UT, was hit with 3 devastating mudslides,
that were caused by a combination of recent heavy rain,
hail, and wildfires. Widespread damage resulted.
In 2003 Typhoon Maemi, with 135 mph winds, hammered South Korea,
killing at least 87, leaving thousands homeless, and downed
trees, powerlines, and caused a landslide. Storm totals
were over 10 inches in many areas...and it was the worst
storm to hit the region in nearly a centry.
In 2013 An estimated 6 to 10 inches of rain fell during 12 to 18
hours along Colorado's Rocky Mountain Range, from Boulder
south to Colorad Springs...causing residents to be
evacuated, washing out roads, and killing at least 3.
Several communities were cut off by the floodwaters.

In 1922 The temperature at El Azizia in Libyia soared
to 136 degrees to estbalish a world record. To make
matters worse, a severe ghibi (dust storm) was in
            progress.
In 1928 Hurricane San Felipe crossed Puerto Rico resulting in the
highest winds, the heaviest rains, and the greatest
destruction in years. The hurricane produced much damage
in the Virgin Islands, and later hit the Bahamas and
            Florida.
In 1978 Torrential rains during the early morning resulted in a
flash flood in western and southwestern Little Rock, as
well as adjacent areas. There were 10 fatalities, mainly
from people trying to drive through flooded areas. Water
went from ankle deep...to knee deep...to waist deep...in
            just 3 hours.
In 1984 Hurricane Diana, after making a complete loop off
the Carolina coast, made landfall and moved across
eastern North Carolina. Diana deluged Cape Fear with
more than 18 inches of rain, and caused 78 million
            dollars damage in North Carolina.
In 1987 Showers and thunderstorms produced heavy rain in the
northeastern U.S. Flooding was reported in Vermont, New
York, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Greenwood NY received
6.37 inches of rain. A dike along a creek at Prattsburg
NY gave way and a two million dollar onion crop left on
the ground to dry was washed away. The prolonged rains
in the eastern U.S. finally came to an end late in the
day as a cold front began to push the warm and humid
            airmass out to sea.
In 1988 Hurricane Gilbert smashed into the Cayman Islands, as
it headed for the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico, and
strenghtened into a monster hurricane, packing winds
of 175 mph. The barometric pressure at the center of
Gilbert reached 26.13 inches (888 mb), an all-time record
for any hurricane in the Carribean, Gulf of Mexico, or
the Atlantic Ocean. Gilbert covered much of the Gulf of
Mexico, producing rain as far away as the Florida Keys.
In 1989 Unseasonably cool weather prevailed over the Central
Plains Region, with a record low of 29 degrees at North
Platte NE. Unseasonably warm weather prevailed across
the Pacific Northwest, with a record high of 96 degrees
at Eugene OR. Thunderstorms over south Texas produced
wind gusts to 69 mph at Del Rio, and two inches of rain
            in two hours.
In 1999 Hurricane Floyd, with winds of 155 mph, ravaged the
Bahamas, and headed toward Florida. It weakened a bit,
turned north, and made landfall near Cape Fear, NC on
the 16th as a category 2 hurricane. Floyd was responsible
for 69 deaths, and at least $3 billion in damage.

In 1937 The mercury soared to 92 degrees at Seattle WA, a record
            for September.
In 1944 A very destructive hurricane swept across Cape Hatteras
and Chesapeake Bay, side swiped New Jersey and Long
Island, and crossed southeastern Massachusetts. The
hurricane killed more than 400 persons, mainly at sea.
The hurricane destroyed the Atlantic City NJ boardwalk.
In 1970 The temperature at Fremont OR dipped to 2 above zero to
equal the state record for September set on the 24th in
            1926.
In 1987 Barrow AK received 5.1 inches of snow, a record for
September. Thunderstorms developing along a cold front
produced severe weather from Minnesota to Texas.
Thunderstorms in Iowa produced baseball size hail at
Laporte City, and 80 mph winds at Laurens. Hail caused
more than ten million dollars damage to crops in Iowa.
Thunderstorms in Missouri produced wind gusts to 75 mph
at Missouri City and Kansas City. A thunderstorm in
Texas deluged the town of Fairlie with two inches of rain
            in just two hours.
In 1988 Hurricane Gilbert made the first of its two landfalls on
Mexico, producing 170 mph winds at Cozumel. Thunderstorms
produced severe weather over the Texas panhandle during the
evening hours. One thunderstorm spawned a (F-2) tornado in
the southwest part of Amarillo, and deluged the area with
five inches of rain. The heavy rain left roads under as much
as five feet of water, and left Lawrence Lake a mile out of
its banks. Hurricane Gilbert lost some of its punch crossing
the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. Its maximum winds
            diminished to 120 mph.
In 1989 Unseasonably cool weather prevailed across the south
central U.S. Eight cities reported record low tempera-
tures for the date, including Raton NM with a reading of
30 degrees. The afternoon high of 59 degrees at Topeka
KS marked their third straight record cool maximum
temperature. Unseasonably warm weather continued in the
Pacific Northwest. Seattle WA reported a record eight
days in a row of 80 degree weather in September.
In 2014 (14th-16th) Hurricane Odile slammed into the Baja
Peninsula as a Category 3 hurricane...tied with Hurricane
Olivia as the strongest hurricane to hit that area...the
last time that happened was in 1967.

Charleston. However, just before the tide reached the
city, a shift in the wind caused the water level to drop
            five feet in ten minutes.
In 1910 Rains of .27 inch on the 14th and .73 inch on the 15th
were the earliest and heaviest of record for Fresno CA,
which, along with much of California, experiences a
            "rainy season" in the winter.
In 1939 The temperature at Detroit MI soared to 100 degrees to
            establish a record for September.
In 1982 A snowstorm over Wyoming produced 16.9 inches at Lander
to esablish a 24 hour record for September for that
            location. (13th-15th)
In 1987 The first snow of the season was observed at the Winter
Park ski resort in Colorado early in the day. Eight
inches of snow was reported at the Summit of Mount Evans,
along with wind gusts to 61 mph. Early morning
thunderstorms in Texas produced up to six inches of rain
in Real County. Two occupants of a car drowned, and the
other six were injured as it was swept into Camp Wood
Creek, near the town of Leakey. Late afternoon and
evening thunderstorms produced severe weather in central
and northeastern Oklahoma. Wind gusts to 70 mph and golf
ball size hail were reported around Oklahoma City OK.
In 1988 Thunderstorms brought much needed rains to parts of the
central U.S. Rainfall totals of 2.87 inches at Sioux
City IA and 4.59 inches at Kansas City MO were records
for the date. Up to eight inches of rain deluged the
Kansas City area, nearly as much rain as was received the
previous eight months. Hurricane Gilbert, meanwhile,
slowly churned toward the border of Mexico and the U.S.
In 1989 Showers and thunderstorms produced locally heavy rain in
the Central Appalachians. Virgie VA received 2.60 inches
of rain during the evening hours, and Bartlett TN was
deluged with 2.75 inches in just ninety minutes. Heavy
rain left five cars partially submerged in high water in
a parking lot at Bulls Gap TN. Thunderstorms over
central North Carolina drenched the Fayetteville area
with 4 to 8 inches of rain between 8 PM and midnight.
Flash flooding, and a couple of dam breaks, claimed the
lives of two persons, and caused ten million dollars
damage. Hugo, churning over the waters of the Carribean,
strengthened to the category of a very dangerous
hurricane, packing winds of 150 mph.
In 2010 Hurricane Julia increased rapidly to a Category 4 storm,
becoming the strongest hurricane on record so far east
in the Atlantic Ocean. At the same time, Hurricane Igor,
also in the Atlantic Ocean, was also a Category 4 storm.
This was the second time in recorded history that 2
Category 4 hurricanes were active at the same time in
the Atlantic. The previous occurrence was in 1926, when
Hurricanes Four and Six (storms were not named back
then) were in the Atlantic Basin. Hurricane Four stayed
in the Atlantic Ocean, while Hurricane Six hit Miami,
Florida as a Category 4 storm on Sept. 18, 1926.

In 1881 Iowa's earliest measurable snow of record fell over
western sections of the state. Four to six inches was
            reported between Stuart and Avoca.
In 1928 The hurricane San Felipe, a monster hurricane, which left
600 dead in Guadeloupe, and 300 dead in Puerto Rico,
struck West Palm Beach FL causing enormous damage, and
then headed for Lake Okeechobee. When the storm was
over, the lake covered an area the size of the state of
Delaware, and beneath its waters were 2000 victims. The
only survivors were those who reach large hotels for
safety, and a group of fifty people who got onto a raft
to take their chances out in the middle of the lake.
In 1984 The remains of Tropical Storm Edourd began to produce
torrential rains in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas.
Port Isabel reported more than 21 inches.
In 1987 Overnight rains soaked Arkansas, with 5.25 inches
reported at Bismarck. In the town of Malvern, up to four
feet of water was reported over several downtown streets,
with water entering some homes and businesses.
Thunderstorms in Texas drenched Lufkin with 4.30 inches
of rain in just three hours. Evening thunderstorms
produced severe weather in Missouri. A small tornado
near Kirksville lifted a barn thirty feet into the air
            and then demolished it.
In 1988 Hurricane Gilbert moved ashore into Mexico, 120 miles
            south of Brownsville, TX during the early evening;
establishing an all-time record for the western
hemisphere with a barometric reading of 26.13 inches.
Peak wind gusts to 200 mph, as well as gusts to 61 mph
at Brownsville, and 82 mph at Padre Island were noted.
Six foot tides eroded three to four feet off beaches
along the Lower Texas Coast, leaving the waterline 75
feet farther inland. Rainfall totals ranged up to 8.71
inches at Lamar TX. Gilbert caused three million dollars
damage along the Lower Texas Coast, but less than a
            million dollars damage along the Middle Texas Coast;
but Gilbert devastated Jamaica and the Yucatan Peninsula.
In 1989 Showers and thunderstorms, respresenting what remained of
Hurricane Octave, brought locally heavy rains to
California, impeding the drying process for raisins and
other crops. Sacramento CA was soaked with 1.53 inches
of rain in six hours. At Phoenix AZ, the afternoon high
of 107 degrees marked a record seventy-six days with
afternoon highs 105 degrees or above.
In 2004 (7th-17th) Hurricane Ivan, the fifth hurricane of the 2004
season, began his swath of destruction with heavy rain and
high winds by hitting the Leeward Islands with 115 mph
winds. At least 90 percent of the structures on Grenada
were damaged or destroyed. Ivan increased to 160 mph
(category 5) on the 9th, grazed southern Jamaica with 155
mph winds on the 10th, and alternated between category 4
and 5 over the next several days. Ivan then moved just past
the Cayman Islands and the western tip of Cuba, bringing
winds from 125 to 165 mph to those areas. Finally into the
Gulf Of Mexico, Ivan came ashore at Gulf Shores, AL as a
strong category 3 hurricane on the 16th. Major damage was
all along the the Gulf Coast, with heavy rain, widespread
flooding, high winds, and tornadoes across the region and
southeast United States. The Interstate 10 bridge across
Escambia Bay collapsed into the bay, and several state
roads were heavily damaged by the storm. Many deaths were
blamed on Ivan, from the Caribbean, to the United States,
and further inland. The remnants of Ivan brought heavy
rain and tornadoes to the Tennessee Valley, the Carolinas,
and into the northeast United States. Meanwhile, Tropical
Storm Jeanne hit the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and the
Dominican Republic with high winds, heavy rain, and severe
flooding. Jeanne weakened to a depression on the 17th, but
then regained tropical storm and hurricane status over the
next several days, as she meandered near and looped east
            of the Bahamas.
In 2010 A severe storm swept through New York City, with 100 mph
straight line winds causing damage to homes, and causing
numerous down trees, power lines, and power outages.
In 2012 Typhoon Samba made landfall in northeast Okinawa, with
            120 mph winds.

In 1932 Concord NH was drenched with 5.97 inches of rain in
24 hours to establish a record for that location (16th-
            17th).
In 1963 Nearly two and a half inches of rain fell at Yuma AZ in
24 hours. It was the most intense rain for Yuma during
the period between 1909 and 1977.
In 1965 A storm produced a band of heavy snow across parts of
Wyoming. Totals of 23 inches at Rawlins and 20.7 inches
at Lander far surpassed previous snowfall record totals
for so early in the season. (15th-17th)
In 1987 Thunderstorms produced large hail, damaging winds, and
heavy rain in the northeastern U.S. Heavy rain in
southwestern Pennsylvania forced evacuation of twenty
homes along Four Mile Run Creek, near Darlington.
Harrisburg PA established a record for the date with 2.11
inches of rain. A cold front in the central U.S. brought
freezing temperatures to parts of Montana and Wyoming.
In 1988 Early in the morning a tornado hit Kelly Air Force Base
in San Antonio TX injuring three persons and causing
twenty-eight million dollars damage. A second tornado
on the northwest side of San Antonio caused six million
dollars damage, and a third tornado in Bexar County
killed one person and injured another. Thunderstorms
associated with Hurricane Gilbert spawned a total of
forty-seven tornadoes in a two day period, with forty
tornadoes in central and south central Texas.
In 1989 Hurricane Hugo hit the Virgin Islands, producing wind
gusts to 97 mph at Saint Croix. Hurricane Hugo passed
directly over the island of Saint Croix causing complete
devastation and essentially cutting off the island from
communications. A storm surge of five to seven feet
occurred at Saint Croix. The only rain gauge left
operating, at Caneel Bay, indicated 9.40 inches in
24 hours. Hurricane Hugo claimed the lives of three
persons at Saint Croix, and caused more than 500 million
dollars damage. A ship, Nightcap, in the harbor of
Culebra, measured wind gusts as high as 170 mph.
A cold front brought high winds to the Great Basin and
the Rocky Mountain Region, and thunderstorms along the
cold front produced wind gusts to 66 mph at Yellowstone
            Park WY.
In 2000 Tropical Storm Gordon made landfall at Cedar Key, FL
with 70 mph winds. Previously a minimal hurricane, it
produced large amounts of rain and several tornadoes
across the Florida Peninsula as it approached.
In 2001 A severe hailstorm near Rocky Ford, CO killed 1500 birds,
            most of them white pelicans.
In 2014 Harrison, Arkansas measured 1.41 inches of rain in only
12 minutes, from a strong thunderstorm in the area.

In 1939 A west coast hurricane moved onshore south of Los Angeles
bringing unprecedented rains along the southern coast of
California. Nearly five and a half inches of rain
drenched Los Angeles during a 24 hour period. The
hurricane caused two million dollars damage, mostly to
structures along the coast and to crops, and claimed 45
lives at sea. "El Cordonazo" produced 5.66 inches of
rain at Los Angeles and 11.6 inches of rain at Mount
Wilson, both records for the month of September.
In 1987 Hurricane Emily crossed the island of Bermuda during the
early morning. Emily, moving northeast at 45 mph,
produced wind gusts to 115 mph at Kindley Field. The
thirty-five million dollars damage inflicted by Emily
made it the worst hurricane to strike Bermuda since 1948.
Parts of Michigan and Wisconsin experienced their first
freeze of the autumn. Snow and sleet were reported in
the Sheffield and Sutton areas of northeastern Vermont at
            midday.
In 1988 Low pressure off the Northern Pacific Coast brought rain
and gale force winds to the coast of Washington State.
Fair weather prevailed across most of the rest of the
            nation.
In 1989 Twenty-three cities in the south central U.S. reported
record low temperatures for the date, including Topeka KS
with a reading of 33 degrees, and Binghamton NY with a
low of 25 degrees. Showers and thunderstorms in the
southeastern U.S. drenched Atlanta GA with 4.87 inches of
rain, their sixth highest total of record for any given
            day.

In 1936 Denver CO was buried under 21.3 inches of snow,
19.4 inches in 24 hours. The heavy wet snow snapped
trees and wires causing seven million dollars damage.
            (26th-27th)
In 1950 Residents of the northeastern U.S. observed a blue sun
and a blue moon, caused by forest fires in British
            Columbia.
In 1963 San Diego CA reached an all-time record high of
111 degrees. Los Angeles hit 109 degrees.
In 1970 Santa Ana winds brought fires to Los Angeles County, and
point south and east. Half a million acres were consumed
by the fires, as were 1000 structures. Twenty firemen
            were injured. (25th-29th)
In 1979 In the midst of a hot September in Death Valley CA, the
afternoon high was 104 degrees for the second of three
days, the coolest afternoon highs for the month.
In 1987 Freezing temperatures were reported in the Northern and
Central Appalachians, and the Upper Ohio Valley. The low
of 27 degrees at Concord NH tied their record for the
date. Temperatures soared into the 90s in South Dakota.
Pierre SD reported an afternoon high of 98 degrees.
In 1988 Unseasonably warm weather prevailed across Florida.
Afternoon highs of 92 degrees at Apalachicola and
95 degrees at Fort Myers were records for the date.
In 1989 Rain spread from the southeastern states across
New England overnight. Cape Hatteras NC reported
measurable rainfall for the fourteenth straight day, with
15.51 inches of rain recorded during that two
week period. Phoenix AZ reported a record high of
108 degrees, and a record 134 days of 100 degree weather
for the year. Afternoon temperatures were only in the
40s over parts of northwest Wisconsin and Upper Michigan.

In 1816 A black frost over most of New England kills unripened
corn in the north resulting in a year of famine.
In 1959 A tornado 440 yards in width traveled 20 miles from near
Hollow OK to western Cherokee County KS. Although a
strong tornado, it was very slow moving, and gave a
tremendous warning roar, and no one was killed.
In 1970 Afternoon highs of 103 degrees at Long Beach CA and
105 degrees at the Los Angeles Civic Center were the
hottest since September records were established in 1963.
Fierce Santa Ana winds accompanying the extreme heat
            resulted in destructive fires.
In 1985 A record early season snowstorm struck the Central High
Plains Region. The storm left up to nineteen inches of
snow along the Colorado Front Range, and as much as a
foot of snow in the plains.
In 1987 While those at the base of Mount Washington NH enjoyed
sunny skies and temperatures in the 70s, the top of the
mountain was blanketed with 4.7 inches of snow, along
with wind gusts to 99 mph, and a temperature of
13 degrees. Severe thunderstorms developed along a cold
front in the south central U.S. A thunderstorm west of
Noodle TX produced golf ball size hail and wind gusts to
            70 mph.
In 1988 Thunderstorms developing ahead of a cold front produced
large hail in southeast Wyoming during the afternoon,
with tennis ball size hail reported at Cheyenne. Strong
winds ushering the cold air into the north central U.S.
gusted to 59 mph at Lander WY.
In 1989 Freezing temperatures were reported in the Great Lakes
Region and the Ohio Valley. Houghton Lake MI reported a
record low of 21 degrees. Thunderstorms in the western
U.S. produced wind gusts to 50 mph at Salt Lake City UT,
and wind gusts to 58 mph at Cody WY.

            ten from one family.
In 1980 The temperature at Blue Canyon CA soared to 88 degrees,
an October record for that location.
In 1981 Severe thunderstorms raked Phoenix AZ with heavy rain,
high winds, and hail up to an inch and a half in
diameter, for the second day in a row. Thunderstorms on
the 1st deluged Phoenix with .68 inch of rain in five
            minutes, equalling their all-time record.
In 1987 A fast moving cold front produced snow flurries from
Minnesota to the Appalachian Mountains, and gale force
winds behind the front ushered cold air into the Great
Lakes Region. Valentine NE reported a record low of
25 degrees. Temperatures recovered rapidly in the
Northern High Plains Region, reaching the low 80s by
afternoon. Jackson WY warmed from a morning low of
21 degrees to an afternoon high of 76 degrees.
In 1988 Early morning thunderstorms in Georgia produced three
inches of rain at Canton and Woodstock.
In 1989 Flooding due to thunderstorm rains in the southeastern
U.S. on the last day of September and the first day of
October caused the Etowah River to rise seven feet above
flood stage at Canton GA. Thunderstorms produced up to
ten inches of rain in northeastern Georgia, with six
inches reported at Athens GA in 24 hours. One man was
killed, and another man was injured, when sucked by
            floodwaters into drainage lines.
In 2014 (2nd-3rd) Widespread severe weather occurred across
Arkansas, with over 80 reports of severe weather. There
were at least 5 hail reports, 3 tornadoes, and the rest
were damaging wind. One man was killed in Malvern, AR,
when a tree fell on his home.
In 2021 Thunderstorms set up along a boundary from northwest to
north to northeast of Little Rock, repeatedly training
over the same areas. Storm reports of 3 to 10 inches of
rain were noted, with several water rescues, flooding,
and road closures due to high water.

In 1947 The eye of a hurricane passed directly over New Orleans,
and the barometric pressure dipped to 28.61 inches. The
hurricane killed 51 persons, and caused 110 million
dollars damage. It produced wind gusts to 155 mph while
making landfall over Fort Lauderdale FL two days earlier.
In 1967 Hurricane Beulah deluged Brownsville TX with 12.19 inches
of rain in 24 hours, to establish a record for that
location. Hurricane Beulah made landfall on the 20th
near the mouth of the Rio Grande River, where a wind gust
to 135 mph was reported by a ship in the port. (19th-20th)
Beulah also spawned a total of 115 tornadoes, the most
            ever from a tropical system.
In 1987 Cool autumn-like weather invaded the Central Rockies.
Temperatures dipped into the 30s and 40s, with teens and
20s reported in the higher elevations. Gunnison CO was
the cold spot in the nation with a morning low of 15
            degrees.
In 1988 Thunderstorms developing along a fast moving cold front
produced severe weather in Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana
and Michigan. Eight tornadoes were reported, including
five in Indiana. Thunderstorm winds gusted to 74 mph at
Wabash IN. Winds associated with the cold front itself
gusted to 69 mph at Kenosha WI.
In 1989 Showers and thunderstorms produced heavy rain in
the Middle and Northern Atlantic Coast Region. Cape
Hatteras NC was deluged with nearly 3.50 inches of rain
in three hours. Syracuse NY reported 1.77 inches of
rain, a record for the date, and Chatham NJ reported
an all-time record of 3.45 inches in one day. Hurricane
Hugo headed for the Bahamas, and Tropical Storm Iris,
following close on its heels, strengthened to near
            hurricane force.
In 1999 Tropical Storm Harvey formed in the Gulf of Mexico, and took
an unexpected southeast turn toward Naples, Florida; before
crossing south Florida, and being absorbed by a cold front
near the Bahamas on the 22nd.

In 1845 A tornado traveled an amazing 275 miles across Lake Ontario,
            New York and Lake Champlain.
In 1926 The hurricane which hit Miami FL on the 18th, pounded
Pensacola FL with wind gusts to 152 mph. Winds raged in
excess of 100 mph for four hours, and above 75 mph for 20
            hours.
In 1967 Hurricane Beulah moved into South Texas, and torrential
rains from the hurricane turned the rich agricultural
areas of South Texas into a large lake. Beulah also
            spawned a record 115 tornadoes.
In 1983 The temperature at West Yellowstone MT plunged to
six degrees below zero, while the temperature at
San Francisco CA soared to 94 degrees.
In 1987 Afternoon and evening thunderstorms produced severe
weather in Oklahoma and west Texas. In Oklahoma,
a thunderstorm at Seiling produced three inches of rain
in one hour, golf ball size hail, and wind gusts to
60 mph which collapsed a tent at the state fair injuring
            nine persons.
In 1988 Showers and thunderstorms produced locally heavy rains in
central Wyoming, and snow in some of the higher
elevations. Casper WY reported 1.75 inches of rain in 24
hours, and a thunderstorm north of the Wild Horse
Reservoir produced 1.90 inches of rain in just 40 minutes.
Hugo jilted Iris. Hurricane Hugo churned toward the
Southern Atlantic Coast, gradually regaining strength
along the way. Tropical Storm Iris got too close to
            Hugo, and began to weaken.
In 1989 A cold front brought strong and gusty winds to the Great
Basin and the Southern Plateau Region, with wind gusts to
44 mph reported at Kingman AZ.
In 2000 Violent thunderstorms across the Ohio Valley caused
significant damage in many areas...especially in Xenia,
Ohio...which was hit by an F-4 tornado. It brought back
memories of The Tornado Super Outbreak back in April, 1974.
when an F-5 tornado destroyed much of the city.
In 2002 Hurricane Isidore, which deluged Jamaica days earlier as
a tropical storm, slammed into western Cuba with 105 mph
winds. This area was also hit by Hurricane Michelle just
10 months earlier. Several tornadoes plowed across Indiana
ahead of a strong cold front. Indianapolis and Martinsville
            were particularly hard hit.

In 1894 A heavy chicken house, sixteen by sixteen feet in area,
was picked up by a tornado and wedged between two trees.
The hens were found the next day sitting on their eggs in
the chicken house, with no windows broken, as though
            nothing had happened.
In 1938 A great hurricane smashed into Long Island and bisected
New England causing a massive forest blowdown and
widespread flooding. Winds gusted to 186 mph at
Blue Hill MA, and a storm surge of nearly thirty feet
caused extensive flooding along the coast of Rhode
Island. The hurricane killed 600 persons and caused 500
million dollars damage. The hurricane, which lasted
twelve days, destroyed 275 million trees. Hardest hit
were Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Long
Island NY. The "Long Island Express" produced gargantuan
waves with its 150 mph winds. The waves smashed against
the New England shore with such force that earthquake-
recording machines on the Pacific coast clearly showed
            the shock of each wave.
In 1954 The temperature at Deeth NV soared from a morning low of
12 degrees to a high of 87 degrees, a record daily warm-
            up for the state.
In 1987 Tropical Storm Emily, which formed in the Carribean the
previous afternoon, caused considerable damage to the
banana industry of Saint Vincent in the Windward Islands.
Unseasonably hot weather continued in Florida and the
western U.S. Redding CA and Red Bluff CA, with record
highs of 108 degrees, tied for honors as the hot spot in
            the nation.
In 1988 Thunderstorms produced high winds and locally heavy rain
in the southwestern U.S. One thunderstorm in west Texas
produced wind gusts to 86 mph at Dell City completely
destroying an airport hangar. A Cessna 150 aircraft
housed within the hangar was flipped over and snapped in
two. Thunderstorms produced large hail in east central
Utah, while snow blanketed some of the higher elevations
            of the state.
In 1989 Hurricane Hugo slammed into the South Carolina coast
about 11 PM, making landfall near Sullivans Island.
Hurricane Hugo was directly responsible for thirteen
deaths, and indirectly responsible for twenty-two others.
A total of 420 persons were injured in the hurricane, and
damage was estimated at eight billion dollars, including
two billion dollars damage to crops. Sustained winds
reached 85 mph at Folly Beach SC, with wind gusts as high
was 138 mph. Wind gusts reached 98 mph at Charleston,
and 109 mph at Shaw AFB. The biggest storm surge
occurred in the McClellanville and Bulls Bay area of
Charleston County, with a storm surge of 20.2 feet
reported at Seewee Bay. Shrimp boats were found one half
            mile inland at McClellanville.

In 1890 A severe hailstorm struck Strawberry AZ. Five days after
the storm hail still lay in drifts 12 to 18 inches deep.
In 1913 Des Moines IA experienced their earliest freeze of record.
In 1961 Hurricane Esther made a near complete circle south of
Cape Cod. The hurricane then passed over Cape Cod and
hit Maine. Its energy was largely spent over the
North Atlantic Ocean, however, heavy rains over Maine
resulted in widespread local flooding of cellars, low
            roads, and underpasses.
In 1983 Forty-one cities reported record cold temperatures during
the morning. Houston TX hit 50 degrees, and Williston ND
            plunged to 19 above.
In 1987 Hurricane Emily, the first hurricane to roam the
Carribean in nearly six years, made landfall over the
Dominican Republic late in the day, packing 125 mph
winds. Emily killed three persons and caused thirty
million dollars damage. A record high of 92 degrees
at Miami FL was their fifth in a row.
In 1988 An early morning thunderstorm produced baseball size hail
at Plainview, in Hale County TX. Late in the evening
more thunderstorms in the Southern High Plains Region
produced wind gusts to 75 mph at Plainview TX and Crosby TX
In 1989 Hurricane Hugo quickly lost strength over South Carolina,
but still was a tropical storm as it crossed into North
Carolina, just west of Charlotte, at about 7 AM. Winds
around Charlotte reached 69 mph, with gusts to 99 mph.
Eighty percent of the power was knocked out to Charlotte
and Mecklenburg County. Property damage in North
Carolina was 210 million dollars, and damage to crops was
97 million dollars. The strongest storm surge occurred
along the southern coast shortly after midnight, reaching
nine feet above sea level at ocean Isle and Sunset Beach.
Hugo killed one person and injured 15 others in North
Carolina. Strong northwesterly winds ushered unseasonably
cold air into the north central U.S., in time for the
official start of autumn, at 8:20 PM CDT. Squalls produced
light snow in northern Wisconsin. Winds in Wisconsin gusted
            to 52 mph at Rhinelander.
In 2000 Tropical Storm Helene struck Pensacola, Florida, bringing
more heavy rain to an area hit just days earlier by
            Tropical Storm Gordon.
In 2002 Hurricane Isidore, which had just days before ravaged
parts of Cuba, hit the Yucatan Peninsula near Progreso,
Mexico, with 125 mph winds. It stayed over land a few days,
weakening it considerably, but producing flooding rains
over the Yucatan Peninsula and Cuba, because of its large
circulation. Isidore weakened to a Tropical Storm by the
time it moved back into the Gulf Of Mexico...finally making
landfall near New Orleans as a Tropical Storm on the 26th.
In 2003 For the second time in just under a month, Baja California
was hit by a hurricane...this time, Hurricane Marty with
100 mph winds, coming ashore near San Jose Del Cabo. Heavy
rain of over 8 inches caused flooding and mudslides.
The remnants of Ivan, which hit Gulf Shores, Alabama and
adjacent areas on the 17th, had drifted off the southeast
U.S. Coast, then looped across south Florida, and into the
eastern Gulf Of Mexico...regenerating as a Tropical Storm
on the 22nd, coming ashore on the 23rd near Cameron,
            Louisiana (22nd-23rd).

In 1926 The great "Miami Hurricane" produced winds reaching
138 mph which drove ocean waters into the Biscayne Bay
drowning 135 persons. The eye of the hurricane passed
over Miami, at which time the barometric pressure reached
27.61 inches. Tides up to twelve feet high accompanied
the hurricane, which claimed a total of 372 lives.
In 1987 Early morning thunderstorms in northern Texas produced
wind gusts to 65 mph at Sulphur Springs, and 2.50 inches
of rain in one hour to Commerce, which caused widespread
street flooding. Bonham TX received 4.50 inches of rain
which also resulted in widespread street flooding as Pig
            Branch overflowed its banks.
In 1988 A strong cold front produced severe thunderstorms in the
north central U.S. High winds behind the cold front
gusted to 92 mph at Fort Collins CO, and up to a foot of
snow blanketed the mountains of Montana, with seven
inches reported at Great Falls. High winds in Colorado
            caused three million dollars damage.
In 1989 Hurricane Hugo hit Puerto Rico, producing wind gusts
to 92 mph at San Juan, and wind gusts to 120 mph at
Roosevelt Roads. Hugo produced a storm surge of four to
six feet, and northeastern sections of the island were
deluged with more than ten inches of rain. Hugo claimed
the lives of a dozen persons in Puerto Rico, and caused
a bilion dollars damage, incuding 100 million dollars
damage to crops. Thunderstorms representing what remained
of Hurricane Octave continued to bring heavy rain to the
valleys of northern California. Heavier 24 hour rainfall
totals included 3.15 inches at Redding, and 2.66 inches at
            Red Bluff.
In 2003 Hurricane Isabel, which at one time, was a category 5
hurricane, the first in the Atlantic basin since Mitch in
1998, weakened to a category 2 hurricane before coming
ashore at Drum Inlet, North Carolina. Isabel was a rather
large storm, with tropical storm and hurricane force winds,
as well as heavy rains, spreading over a large area.

In 1841 An October gale, the worst of record for Nantucket MA,
caught the Cap Cod fishing fleet at sea. Forty ships
were driven ashore on Cape Cod, and 57 men perished from
the town of Truro alone. Heavy snow fell inland, with 18
            inches near Middletown CT.
In 1912 The longest dry spell of record in the U.S. commenced as
Bagdad CA went 767 days without rain.
In 1964 Hurricane Hilda struck Louisiana spawning many tornadoes,
            and claimed twenty-two lives.
In 1979 The first killer tornado of record in October in
Connecticut destroyed sixteen vintage aircraft at the
Bradley Air Museum in Windsor Locks. The tornado damaged
more than 100 homes causing 200 million dollars damage.
Three persons were killed, and 500 others were injured.
In 1986 Remnants of Hurricane Paine deluged Oklahoma and
southeastern Kansas with 6 to 10 inch overnight rains.
Hardy OK was drenched with 21.79 inches. Heavy rain
between September 26th and October 4th caused 350 million
            dollars damage in Oklahoma.
In 1987 Twenty-five cities in the Upper Midwest, ten in Iowa,
reported record low temperatures for the date. Duluth
MN, Eau Claire WI and Spencer IA dipped to 24 degrees.
Temperatures warmed into the 80s in the Northern and
Central High Plains Region. At Chadaron NE, the mercury
soared from a morning low of 29 degrees to an afternoon
high of 88 degrees. Temperatures soared above 100
degrees in southern California. The high of 108 degrees
at Downtown Los Angeles was a record for October.
(2nd-3rd) 7.87" of rain fell on Nimes, France in 3 hours,
causing floods and mudslides, & $634 million damage.
In 1988 Cold Canadian air invaded the north central U.S. bringing
an end to the growing season across those states.
Unseasonably warm weather prevailed in the southwestern
U.S. Phoenix AZ reported a record high of 105 degrees.
In 1989 Unseasonably cold weather prevailed from the Pacific
Northwest to the Upper Mississippi Valley. A dozen
cities reported record low temperatures for the date,
including Bismarck ND and Williston ND with readings
of 16 degrees above zero. An upper level weather
disturbance brought snow to parts of Idaho, Wyoming
and Montana, with five inches at West Yellowstone MT.
    In 2000 (3rd-4th) A non-tropical system developed rapidly over
South Florida, spawning torrential rains, severe flash
flooding, and several tornadoes. Miami International
Airport measured 7 inches of rain in 2 hours, with a 33
hour storm total of over 15 inches. Nearly 100,000 homes
and businesses in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties
received flood damage...and over 20,000 utility customers
lost power. The communities of Hialeah and Sweetwater
were especially hard hit. The weather system eventually
became a "sub-tropical depression", and transformed into
Tropical Storm Leslie on the 4th, moving away from
            Florida.
In 2002 Hurricane Lili, which was at 145 mph just 24 hours before,
weakened to a 100 mph hurricane before coming ashore near
New Iberia, LA. Widespread heavy rain, damage, and several
tornadoes resulted, with close to 500,000 people without
power at the height of the storm.
In 2015 (3rd-4th) A stalled frontal boundary, and moisture coming
from Hurricane Joaquin brought widespread heavy rain and
flooding to the Carolinas. Charleston, SC recorded 11.50
inches of rain on the 3rd, with an additional 6.87 inches
of rain on the 4th, for a 2 day total of 22.37 inches of
rain. Numerous roads and railroads were also washed out.

In 1777 The Battle of Germantown was fought in a morning fog that
grew more dense with the smoke of battle, causing great
confusion. Americans firing at each other contributed to
            the loss of the battle.
In 1869 A great storm struck New England. The storm reportedly
was predicted twelve months in advance by a British
officer named Saxby. Heavy rains and high floods plagued
all of New England, with strong winds and high tides over
New Hampshire and Maine. Canton CT was deluged with
            12.35 inches of rain.
In 1969 Denver CO received 9.6 inches of snow. October of that
year proved to be the coldest and snowiest of record for
Denver, with a total snowfall for the month of
            31.2 inches.
In 1986 Excessive flooding was reported along the Mississippi
River and all over the Midwest, from Ohio to the Milk
River in Montana. In some places it was the worst
flooding of record. During heavy rains, a motorist was
killed near Rankin, Texas after her car was swept over
            a mile through rushing water.
In 1987 A storm brought record snows to the northeastern U.S.
Snowfall totals ranged up to 21 inches at North
Springfield VT. It was the earliest snow of record for
some locations. The storm claimed 17 lives, in central
New York State injured 332 persons, and in Vermont caused
seventeen million dollars damage. The six inch snow at
Albany NY was their earliest measurable snow in 117 years
of records. Southern California continued to "shake and
bake". An earthquake was reported during the morning, the
second in a matter of days, and during the afternoon,
temperatures soared well above 100 degrees. Highs of 100
degrees at San Francisco, and 108 degrees at Los Angeles
and Santa Maria, were October records. San Luis Obispo
was the hot spot in the nation with a high of 111 degrees.
In 1988 Temperatures dipped below freezing in the north central
U.S. Five cities in North Dakota and Nebraska reported
record low temperatures for the date, including Bismarck
ND with a reading of 17 degrees above zero. Low pressure
brought snow and sleet to parts of Upper Michigan.
In 1989 Unseasonably cold weather continued in the north central
U.S., with freezing temperatures reported across much of
the area from eastern North Dakota to Michigan and
northwest Ohio. Thirteen cities reported record low
temperatures for the date, including Saint Cloud MN,
which was the cold spot in the nation with a morning low
            of 19 degrees.
In 2011 A massive dust storm moved through Arizona, about 20 miles
north of Tucson, causing a chain reaction multiple vehicle
crash. Minimal visibility was reported on Interstate 10,
with at least one person killed, and two sustaining
            critical injuries.
In 2013 While severe thunderstorms and tornadoes were out ahead
of a strong cold front in Iowa and east Nebraska...a
massive blizzard was raging in parts of Wyoming, west
Nebraska, and the Dakotas. Wayne, Nebraska was hit by an
            EF-4 tornado.

In 1638 The journal of John Winthrop recorded that a mighty
tempest struck eastern New England. This second severe
hurricane in three years blew down many trees in mile
            long tracks.
In 1786 The famous "Pumpkin Flood" occurred on the Delaware and
Susquehanna Rivers. Harrisburg PA reported a river stage
of twenty-two feet. Heavy rains culminated a wet season.
In 1917 The temperature at Sentinel AZ soared to 116 degrees to
establish an October record for the nation.
In 1972 Heavy rains, mostly the remnants of Tropical Storm
Joanne, fell across much of Arizona. It was thought to
be the first time in Arizona weather history that a
tropical storm entered the state with its circulation
still intact. The center was over Flagstaff early on the
            7th. (3rd-7th)
In 1987 It was another day of scorching heat for the southwestern
U.S. Afternoon highs of 102 degrees at Downtown San
Francisco, and 104 degrees at Monterrey, established all-
time records. The high of 101 degrees at San Jose was a
record for October. Sacramento tied their record for
October for the third time in the month, with a high of
102 degrees. The high for the nation was 111 degrees at
San Luis Obispo and Palm Springs. Twenty cities in the
southeastern U.S. reported record low temperatures for the
date, including Knoxville TN with a reading of 34 degrees.
In 1988 Thirteen cities in the central U.S. reported record low
temperatures for the date, including Duluth MN with a
reading of 21 degrees. Goodland KS reported an afternoon
high of 39 degrees. Showers over Upper Michigan produced
an inch of snow at Marquette.
In 1989 Showers and thunderstorms associated with Tropical Storm
Raymond deluged southeastern Arizona with heavy rain. Up
to 4.5 inches was reported north of Wilcox. Three-
fourths of the streets in the town of Wilcox were left
under eighteen inches of water, and damage exceeded a
million dollars. Evening thunderstorms developing along a
cold front produced severe weather in Oklahoma and the
Texas panhandle. Thunderstorms produced high winds which
gusted to 80 mph at White Deer TX, and resulted in one
death at Pocasset OK. Thunderstorms produced golf ball
size hail at Pampa TX and Lefors TX.
In 2000 After hitting Central America in late September with 135
mph winds, hurricane Keith made landfall a second time,
but with 90 mph winds, near Tampico, Mexico.
Lubbock, TX and Tulsa, OK report their earliest snow ever.

In 1836 A second early season snowstorm produced eleven inches at
Wilkes Barre PA and 26 inches at Auburn NY. All the
mountains in the northeastern U.S. were whitened with
            snow.
In 1981 A Fokker F-28 aircraft crashed in Holland after its starboard
wing was ripped away by a funnel cloud.
In 1984 The temperature at Honolulu, Hawaii, reached 94 degrees
to establish an all-time record at that location.
In 1985 A tropical wave, later to become Tropical Storm Isabel
struck Puerto Rico. As much as 24 inches of rain fell in
24 hours, and the severe flooding and numerous landslides
resulting from the rain claimed about 180 lives.
In 1987 The western U.S. continued to sizzle. Afternoon highs of
85 at Astoria OR, 101 at Tucson AZ, and 102 at Sacramento
CA, equalled October records. It marked the fourth time
in the month that Sacramento had tied their record for
            October.
In 1988 Cool Canadian air prevailed across the central and
eastern U.S. Toledo OH reported a record low of
27 degrees. Limestone ME received an inch of snow. Warm
weather continued in the western U.S. Boise ID reported
a record high of 87 degrees.
In 1989 Temperatures soared into the 90s across southern Texas.
Afternoon highs of 93 at Houston, and 96 at Austin and
Corpus Christi, were records for the date. Beeville was
the hot spot in the nation with an afternoon high of 101
            degrees.

In 1970 Widespread flooding took place across Puerto Rico.
Rainfall amounts for the day ranged up to seventeen
inches at Aibonito. A slow moving tropical depression
was responsible for six days of torrential rains across
the island. Totals in the Eastern Interior Division
averaged thirty inches, with 38.4 inches at Jayuya.
Flooding claimed eighteen lives, and resulted in
            62 million dollars damage.
In 1981 Seattle WA received four inches of rain in 24 hours,
            a record for the city.
In 1987 It was another hot day in the southwestern U.S. Tucson
AZ hit 101 degrees for the second day in a row to again
equal their record for the month of October. Phoenix AZ
reported a record high of 103 degrees, and Blythe CA and
Yuma AZ tied for honors as the hot spot in the nation
with afternoon highs of 108 degrees.

In 1871 Prolonged drought and dessicating winds led to the great
Chicago fire, the Peshtigo horror, and the Michigan fire
holocaust. Fire destroyed more than seventeen thousand
buildings killing more than 200 persons in the city of
Chicago, while a fire consumed the town of Peshtigo WI
killing more than 1100 persons. In Wisconsin, a million
acres of land were burned, and in Michigan, 2.5 million
acres were burned killing 200 persons. "Tornadoes of
fire" generated by intense heat caused houses to explode
in fire, and burned to death scores of persons seeking
            refuge in open fields.
In 1901 A deluge at Galveston TX produced nearly twelve inches of
rain in about a six hour period. The rains came
precisely thirteen months after the day of the famous
            Galveston hurricane disaster.
In 1982 An unusually early snowstorm hit the northern Black Hills
of Wyoming and South Dakota. The storm produced up to 54
inches of snow, and winds as high as 70 mph. The
snowfall was very much dependent upon topography. Rapid
City, 20 miles away, received just a trace of snow.
In 1987 Unseasonably cold weather prevailed from the Upper
Mississippi Valley to the southeastern U.S. Thirty
cities reported record low temperatures for the date,
including Madison WI with a reading of 22 degrees. The
low of 28 degrees at Evansville IN was the coolest of
record for so early in the season. Hot weather continued
in the southwestern U.S. Phoenix AZ reported a record
high of 104 degrees, and a record tying 116 days of 100
degree weather for the year. Tucson AZ established an
all-time record with 72 days of 100 degree weather for
            the year.
In 1988 Snow was reported across parts of northern New England.
Two inches blanketed Mount Snow VT. Warm weather
continued in the northwestern U.S. The afternoon high of
80 degrees at Stampede Pass WA exceeded their previous
record for October by seven degrees.
In 1989 Morning lows in the 20s were reported from the Northern
Plains to the Upper Great Lakes. International Falls MN
and Marquette MI reported record lows of 22 degrees.
Unseasonably warm weather prevailed in central California
as the Oakland Athletics won the American League pennant.
San Luis Obispo CA reported a high of 99 degrees.
In 2001 Hurricane Iris, with 145 mph winds, slammed into Placencia,
Mexico...between Belize City, Belize, and Monkey River
Town...affecting much of the same area that was hit by
Hurricane Mitch in 1998. At one time, the storm had three
eyewalls, reported by Hurricane Hunter aircraft; although
the total area of the storm was rather small.

In 1903 New York City was deluged with 11.17 inches of rain in
24 hours to establish a state record. Severe flooding
occurred in the Passaic Valley of New Jersey where more
than 15 inches of rain was reported.
In 1981 The temperature at San Juan, Puerto Rico, soared to
98 degrees to establish an all-time record for that
            location.
In 1987 Eighteen cities in the southeastern U.S. and the Middle
Atlantic Coast Region reported record low temperatures
for the date. Asheville NC dipped to 29 degrees, and the
record low of 47 degrees at Jacksonville FL marked their
fourth of the month. A second surge of cold air brought
light snow to the Northern Plains, particularly the Black
            Hils of South Dakota.
In 1988 Ten cities in the northeastern U.S. reported record low
temperatures for the date, including Hartford CT with a
reading of 28 degrees. Snow continued in northern New
England through the morning hours. Mount Washington NH
reported five inches of snow. Warm weather continued in
the western U.S. Los Angeles CA reported a record high
            of 102 degrees.
In 1989 Unseasonably cold weather continued in the Upper Midwest.
Thirteen cities in Ohio, Michigan and Indiana reported
record low temperatures for the date, including Marquette
MI with a reading of 20 degrees. Unseasonably warm
weather continued in the western U.S. as the San
Francisco Giants won the National League pennant. San
Jose CA reported a record high of 91 degrees.
In 2001 Severe weather erupted from Nebraska to Texas...with
tornadoes in Nebraska and Oklahoma, along with widespread
reports of hail. Cordell, OK sustained heavy damage.

In 1804 A famous snow hurricane occurred. The unusual coastal
storm caused northerly gales from Maine to New Jersey.
Heavy snow fell across New England, with three feet at
the crest of the Green Mountains, and a foot of snow in
            the Berkshires, at Goshen CT.
In 1920 The temperature at Minneapolis MN reached 90 degrees,
their latest such reading of record.
In 1973 Fifteen to 20 inch rains deluged north central Oklahoma
in thirteen hours producing record flooding. Enid was
drenched with 15.68 inches of rain from the nearly
stationary thunderstorms, which established a state
24 hour rainfall record. Dover OK reported 125 of 150
            homes damaged by flooding.
In 1979 A storm blanketed Worcester MA with 7.5 inches of snow,
a record snowfall total for so early in the season for
            that location.
In 1983 Lightning struck a CB antenna on a moving car in Iowa and
formed a fireball in the front seat as the radio burned.
In 1987 Eleven cities in the north central U.S. reported record
low temperatures for the date, including Colorado Springs
CO with a reading of 23 degrees, and Havre MT with a low
of 11 above zero. Light snow was reported as far south
as Kansas. Omaha NE reported their third earliest snow
            of record.
In 1988 Sunny and mild weather prevailed across the nation for
Columbus Day. The afternoon high of 77 degrees at
Kalispell MT was the warmest reading of record for so
late in the autumn season. Thunderstorms developing
along a cold front produced wind gusts to 56 mph at
Lorain OH. Snowflakes were observed at Milwuakee WI
around Noon, but quickly changed to rain as temperature
readings were in the lower 60s.
In 1989 Thunderstorms produced torrential rains along the
northeast coast of Florida. St. Augustine was deluged with
16.08 inches of rain. The heavy rain caused extensive
flooding of homes and businesses, and left some roads
under three feet of water. Ten cities from the Carolinas
to New England reported record low temperatures for the
date, including Concord NH with a reading of 23 degrees.
Temperatures dipped into the 30s in the Carolinas.
In 2001 A slow moving cold front, an area of low pressure, and
abundant moisture brought excessive rain to Arkansas. Two
day storm totals ranged from 3-5 inches in central Arkansas
to over 7 inches in parts of southwest Arkansas. (10th-11th)

In 1906 Today's World Series game between the Cubs and White Sox saw
a high of 43 degrees, warming from the previous day's 32.
In 1925 Widespread early season snows fell in the northeastern
U.S., with as much as two feet in New Hampshire and
Vermont. The heavy snow blocked roads and cancelled
            football games.
In 1954 A deluge of 6.72 inches of rain in 48 hours flooded the
Chicago River, causing ten million dollars damage in the
            Chicago area. (9th-11th)
In 1987 More than thirty cities in the Upper Midwest reported
record low temperatures for the date, including Waterloo
IA and Scottsbluff NE where the mercury dipped to 16
degrees. Tropical Storm Floyd brought heavy rain to
southern Florida, moisture from Hurricane Ramon produced
heavy rain in southern California, and heavy snow
blanketed the mountains of New York State and Vermont.
In 1988 Low pressure brought gale force winds to the Great Lakes
Region, with snow and sleet reported in some areas.
Unseasonably warm weather prevailed in the north central
U.S. The mercury hit 84 degrees at Cutbank MT and
Worland WY. The temperature at Gunnison CO soared from
a morning low of 12 degrees to a high of 66 degrees.
In 1989 Much of the nation enjoyed "Indian Summer" type weather.
Nine cities in the central U.S. reported record highs for
the date as temperatures warmed into the 80s and 90s.
Record highs included 90 degrees at Grand Island NE and
97 degrees at Waco TX. Strong winds along a cold front
crossing the Northern High Plains Region gusted to 80 mph
at Ames Monument WY during the early morning.
In 2002 Tropical Depression Kyle finally dissipated after 3
weeks...being the third longest storm in the Atlantic
            basin...behind Inga (1969) and Ginger (1971).
In 2017 Ophelia became the 10th consecutive storm to become a
hurricane in the Atlantic basin...tying a record set in
1893. Then on Oct. 15, she was located the farthest east
east that a major hurricane had ever existed in the
Atlantic Ocean, hitting Ireland as a post-tropical
            hurricane on Oct. 16 (11th-16th).

In 1836 A third early season storm produced heavy snow in the
northeastern U.S. Bridgewater NY received 18 inches, a
foot of snow fell at Madison NY, and for the third time
all the mountains of the northeastern U.S. were whitened.
In 1918 Forest fires ravaged parts of Minnesota from the Duluth
area northeastward, claiming the lives of 600 persons.
Smoke with a smell of burnt wood spread to Albany NY and
Washington D.C. in 24 hours. Smoke was noted at
Charleston SC on the 14th, and by the 15th was reported
            in northeastern Texas.
In 1962 The "Columbus Day Big Blow" occurred in the Pacific
Northwest. It was probably the most damaging windstorm
of record west of the Cascade Mountains. Winds reached
hurricane force, with gusts above 100 mph. More than 3.5
billion board feet of timber were blown down, and
communications were severely disrupted due to downed
power lines. The storm claimed 48 lives, and caused 210
            million dollars damage.
In 1987 Floyd, the only hurricane to make landfall the entire
season, moved across the Florida Keys. Floyd produced
wind gusts to 59 mph at Duck Key, and up to nine inches
of rain in south Florida. Sixteen cities in the Ohio
Valley and the Middle Mississippi Valley reported record
low temperatures for the date. Record lows included 27
degrees at Paducah KY, and 24 degrees at Rockford IL and
            Springfield IL.

Embarass MN reported a morning low of 8 degrees. Snow
showers in the northeastern U.S. produced five inches at
            Corry PA.
In 1989 Temperatures again warmed into the 80s in the Central
Plains Region and the Middle Mississippi Valley, with 90s
in the south central U.S. Six cities reported record
high temperatures for the date, including Fort Smith AR
with a reading of 92 degrees. Strong winds along a cold
front crossing the Great Lakes Region and Ohio Valley
gusted to 61 mph at Johnstown PA.

In 1957 Floodwaters roared through a migrant labor camp near
Picacho AZ flooding fifty cabins and a dozen nearby
homes. 250 migrant workers lost their shelters.
The month was one of the wettest Octobers in Arizona
            weather history.
In 1965 Heavy rains hit the coastal areas of southeast Florida.
In a 24 hour period rains of twenty inches were reported
from Deerfield Beach to Fort Lauderdale, with 25.28
inches on the Fort Lauderdale Bahia-Mar Yacht Basin (ten
miles away just 4.51 inches of rain was reported).
Flooding that resulted caused considerable damage to
roads and streets. The rains inundated numerous newly
planted vegetable fields, and some residences. (14th-
            15th).
In 1981 Four days of heavy rain across northern Texas and
southern Oklahoma came to an end. The heaviest
rains fell in a band from southwest of Abilene TX to
McAlester OK, with up to 26 inches reported north of
Gainesville, in north central Texas. The heavy rains
were the result of decaying Hurricane Norma, which also
spawned thirteen tornadoes across the region. Seven
deaths were attributed to the flooding.
In 1984 Dense fog contributed to a 118 vehicle accident on
Interstate 94, just south of Milwaukee WI. It was the
seventh day of an eight day stretch of dense fog. At the
time of the accident the visibility was reportedly close
            to zero.
In 1987 Sixteen cities, mostly in the Appalachain Region,
reported record low temperatures for the date. Record
lows included 43 at Lake Charles la, 35 at Augusta GA,
and 27 at Asheville NC. Gale force winds buffeted the
Carolina coast. Light snow fell across parts of Wyoming,
            Colorado, and western South Dakota.
In 1988 Forty cities in the eastern U.S. reported record low
temperatures for the date. Elkins WV was the cold spot
in the nation with a record low of 18 degrees above zero.
Thunderstorms in Arizona drenched Phoenix with nine
inches of rain in nine hours, the fifth highest total for
any given day in ninety-two years of records. Carefree
AZ was soaked with two inches of rain .
In 1989 Thunderstorms produced severe weather over Michigan
during the morning, and over New York State and
Connecticut during the afternoon and evening hours.
Thunderstorms spawned two tornadoes, and there were
ninety reports of large hail or damaging winds, with
seventy reports of damaging winds in New York State.
A tornado killed one person and injured three others
at McDonough NY. Strong thunderstorm winds gusted to
105 mph at Somerset. Temperatures again warmed into
the 80s and lower 90s over much of the nation east of
the Rockies, with eleven cities reporting record high
temperatures for the date. Afternoon highs of 81 degrees

Dakotas. Winds gusted to 70 mph at Yankton SD, and snow
drifts 10 to 15 feet high were reported in northwest Iowa
and southeast South Dakota. Saint Paul MN reported a
barometric pressure of 28.65 inches on the 16th.
Railroads were blocked by drifts of snow which remained
throughout the severe winter to follow. Gales did
extensive damage to ships on the Great Lakes. (15th-16th)
In 1954 Hurricane Hazel struck the Carolina coastline.
The hurricane demolished every pier along a 170 mile
stretch from Myrtle Beach SC to Cedar Island NC, and
obliterated entire lines of beach homes. Hurricane Hazel
also destroyed 1500 homes as it moved inland with
seventeen foot tides. Winds between Myrtle Beach SC and
Cape Fear NC gusted to 150 mph. Hurricane Hazel caused
163 million dollars damage, and claimed the lives of 98
            persons.
In 1966 Iowa experienced its worst late season tornado of record.
In just one minute a twister tore through the town of
Belmond leveling 75 percent of the businesses, and 100
homes, causing more than eleven million dollars damage.
In 1987 Unseasonably cold weather continued in the eastern U.S.,
with thirteen cities reporting record low temperatures
for the date. The low of 34 degrees at Montgomery AL was
their coldest reading of record for so early in the
season. Lows of 32 at Harrisburg PA and 34 at
Parkersburg WV marked their third straight morning of
            record cold.
In 1988 The cold high pressure system responsible for the record
low temperatures in the eastern U.S. began to move out to
sea, giving way to a trend toward "Indian Summer".
Thunderstorms developing ahead of a cold front produced
golf ball size hail at Altamont KS and hail two inches in
            diameter at Yates City IL.
In 1989 Hurricane Jerry made landfall at Galveston TX at 6:30 PM
CDT. Winds at the Galveston Airport reached 75 mph, with
gusts to 100 mph. Tides along the island were six to
eight feet, and rainfall totals ranged up to slightly
more than six inches north of Beaumont. Three persons
were killed when their vehicle was blown off the
Galveston seawall into the pounding surf. Total damage
along the Upper Texas Coast was estimated at fifteen
million dollars. Thunderstorms produced severe weather
in Lower Michigan during the late morning. Two persons
were injured when a tree fell on their camper at the
Traverse City State park. While strong northerly winds
ushered much colder air into the central U.S.,
unseasonably warm weather continued in the south central
and eastern U.S. The afternoon high of 82 degrees at
Bluefield WV was a record for October.
In 2015 The temperature at Little Rock Arkansas broke a record
with a searing 98 degree high. It was the hottest October
day in Little Rock Weather History, and the hottest it has
been in Little Rock so late in the year.

In 1913 The temperature in Downtown San Francisco soared to
101 degrees to equal their record for October.
In 1937 An unlikely winter-like storm produced as much as ten
inches of snow in Minnesota and Iowa.
In 1987 Ten cities in the southeastern U.S. reported record low
temperatures for the date. The low of 34 degrees at
Augusta GA marked their third straight morning of record
cold. A cold front brought showers and thunderstorms to
parts of the central U.S. Lightning struck a bull and
six cows under a tree near Battiest OK.
In 1988 Late afternoon thunderstorms produced severe weather in
southwestern Lower Michigan and northern Indiana. One
thunderstorm spawned a tornado north of Nappanee IN which
caused half a million dollars damage. Six cities in
California reported record high temperatures for the
date. The afternoon high of 100 degrees at Red Bluff CA
was the latest such reading of record for so late in the
            autumn season.
In 1989 Heavy snow blanketed the foothills of Colorado. Up to
three inches was reported around Denver. Echo Lake was
buried under nineteen inches of snow. Temperatures
again warmed into the 80s and lower 90s in the eastern
and south central U.S. Thirteen cities reported record
high temperatures for the date, including Atlantic City
NJ with a reading of 84 degrees.
In 2014 (16th-17th) Hurricane Gonzalo reached category 4 with 145
winds, but weakened to a category 3 with 115 mph winds
when it hit Bermuda on the 17th.

In 1781 General Cornwallis attempted to escape encirclement by
crossing York River, "but a violent storm arose"
dispersing his boats causing him to ask for an armistice.
In 1910 A hurricane made a loop off the southwest coast
of Florida. Winds above 100 mph were reported at
Fort Myers FL, and the barometric pressure at Sand Key
            reached 28.40 inches.
In 1950 Small but powerful Hurricane King struck Miami FL.
The hurricane packed winds to 122 mph, with gusts to 150
mph. Hurricane King then moved up the Florida peninsula
to Georgia. Four persons were killed and damage was 28
            million dollars.
In 1971 Great balls of fire were observed just ahead of a tornado
moving down the main street of Wray CO. However, little
other electrical activity accompanied the storm. Nine
persons were injured in the tornado, all at a trailer
court at the edge of town.
In 1984 A snowstorm struck northern Utah producing a record
18 inches in 24 hours at Salt Lake City, and 40 inches at
the nearby Alta Ski Resort. The town of Magna, located
ten miles west of Salt Lake City, did not receive any
snow at all. The storm was responsible for a fifty
vehicle pile-up along Interstate 15 near Farmington UT.
In 1987 It was a great day for an Oktoberfest, or to enjoy the
colors of autumn, as much of the nation enjoyed sunny and
mild weather. Columbia SC dipped to 34 degrees marking
their third morning in a row of record cold. Bakersfield
CA reached 80 degrees for the 143rd day in a row to break
            a record established in 1940.
In 1988 Thunderstorms produced severe weather in the Middle
Mississippi Valley and the Lower Ohio Valley. Severe
thunderstorms spawned three tornadoes in Indiana,
including one which injured four persons. Strong
thunderstorm winds at Connerville IN caused three million
dollars damage. Thunderstorms in Illinois produced hail
two inches in diameter at Colfax.
In 1989 Showers and thunderstorms representing the remnants of
Hurricane Jerry deluged southeast Kentucky with four
to six inches of rain in 18 to 24 hours, resulting in
widespread flash flooding. Flooding resulted in more
than five million dollars damage. Temperatures again
warmed into the 80s and lower 90s in the southeastern
U.S. Lakeland FL and Orlando FL reported record highs of
            95 degrees.

In 1906 A hurricane struck South Florida drowning 124 persons
            stranded in the Florida Keys.
In 1910 Northeast winds as high as 70 mph (from a hurricane
moving northward up the Florida peninsula) carried water
out of Tampa Bay and the Hillsboro River. The water
level lowered to nine feet below mean low water. Forty
            ships were grounded.
In 1911 The Athletics and NY Giants waited out a 6-day rain delay,
the longest rain delay in the history of the World Series.
In 1930 A big early season lake effect snowburst on the
lee shores of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario produced
47 inches at Governeur NY and 48 inches just south
            of Buffalo.
In 1988 Eight cities in the southwestern U.S. reported record
high temperatures for the date, including Red Bluff CA
with a reading of 96 degrees.
In 1989 Unseasonably cold air began to invade the central and
eastern U.S. Light snow fell across northern Maine, and
snow was also reported in the Great Lakes Region,
including the Chicago area. Bismarck ND was the cold
spot in the nation with a low of 9 degrees above zero.
Five cities in Florida reported record high readings for
the date, as temperatures warmed above 80 degrees. Miami
FL reported a record high of 90 degrees.
In 2004 Severe thunderstorms erupted across Arkansas and Missouri
spreading eastward into the Mississippi, and Tennessee
Valley...with several tornadoes, along with reports of
hail and strong winds reported. In Potosi, MO several
people were trapped in a lumberyard from tornadic winds.
Significant damage occurred at the Stuttgart, AR Airport.
Tragically, there were also several reports of injuries
and fatalities. Torrential rains and flash flooding also
occured across several areas, including central Arkansas.
Severe weather continued on the 19th across Tennessee,
Mississippi, and Alabama, with more tornadic storms.

In 1844 The famous "Lower Great Lakes Storm" occurred.
Southwesterly winds were at hurricane force for five
hours, driving lake waters into downtown Buffalo NY. The
            storm drowned 200 persons.
In 1961 Rain changed to a record early, heavy wet snow over the
southern mountains of West Virginia. Leaves were still
on trees, resulting in the worst forest disaster since
the fires of 1952-1953. One to two feet of snow fell
            near Summersville and Richwood. (19th-20th)
In 1984 Thunderstorms deluged the town of Odem TX (located
15 miles northwest of Corpus Christi) with 25 inches of
rain in just three and a half hours. Most businesses in
Odem were flooded, as were 1000 homes in nearby Sinton.
In 1987 A cold front brought rainshowers to parts of the central
U.S., and ushered cool Canadian air into the Great Plains
Region. Daytime highs were in the 30s in North Dakota
            and eastern Montana.
In 1988 Thunderstorms produced high winds in eastern Colorado,
with gusts to 63 mph reported at La Junta.
In 1989 Record breaking snows fell across northern and central
Indiana. Totals ranged up to 10.5 inches at Kokomo, with
9.3 inches reported at Indianapolis. The 8.8 inch total
at South Bend was a record for the month as a whole. Up
to seven inches fell in extreme southern Lower Michigan,
and up to six inches fell in southwest Ohio. The heavy
wet snow downed many trees and power lines. Half the
city of Cincinnati OH was without electricity during the
morning hours. Temperatures dipped below freezing across
much of the Great Plains Region. Twenty cities, fourteen
in Texas, reported record low temperatures for the date.
North Platte NE reported a record low of 11 degrees.
Four cities in Florida reported record high temperatures
for the date. The record high of 92 degrees at Miami was
also marked a record fourteen days of 90 degree weather
in October, and 116 such days for the year.
In 2000 Hurricane Michael, with 85 mph winds, struck Newfoundland
in the Canadian maritimes. Shortly before landfall, Michael
had 100 mph winds, reported by a ship that was caught in it
            just offshore.

In 1770 An exceedingly great storm struck eastern New England
causing extensive coastal damage from Massachusetts to
Maine, and the highest tide in 47 years.
In 1983 Remnants of Pacific Hurricane Tico caused extensive
flooding in central and south central Oklahoma. Oklahoma
City set daily rainfall records with 1.45 inch on the
            19th and 6.28 inches on the 20th. (17th-21st)
In 1987 Cold arctic air invaded the Upper Midwest, and squalls in
the Lake Superior snowbelt produced heavy snow in eastern
Ashland County and northern Iron County of Wisconsin.
Totals ranged up to 18 inches at Mellen. In the western
U.S., the record high of 69 degrees at Seattle WA was
their twenty-fifth of the year, the highest number of
record highs for any given year. Bakersfield CA reported
a record 146 days in a row with daily highs 80 degrees or
            above.
In 1988 Unseasonably warm weather continued in the western U.S.
In California, afternoon highs of 96 degrees at Redding
and Red Bluff were records for the date.
In 1989 Forty-nine cities reported record low temperatures for
the date as readings dipped into the 20s and 30s across
much of the south central and southeastern U.S. Lows of
32 at Lake Charles LA and 42 at Lakeland FL were records
for October, and Little Rock AR reported their earliest
freeze of record. Snow blanketed the higher elevations
of Georgia and the Carolinas. Melbourne FL dipped to 47
degrees shortly before midnight to surpass the record low
established that morning. Showers and thunderstorms brought
heavy rain to parts of the northeastern U.S. Autumn leaves
on the ground clogged drains and dtiches causing flooding.
Up to 4.10 inches of rain soaked southern Vermont in three
days. Flood waters washed 600 feet of railroad track,
            resulting in a train derailment.
In 1991 Strong Diablo winds fanned a small brush fire into an inferno
that destroyed over 3300 homes in Oakland and Berkeley.

In 1934 A severe windstorm lashed the northern Pacific coast. In
Washington State, the storm claimed the lives of
22 persons, and caused 1.7 million dollars damage, mostly
to timber. Winds, gusting to 87 mph at North Head WA,
            produced waves twenty feet high.
In 1957 The second in a series of unusual October storms hit
            southern California causing widespread thunderstorms.
Santa Maria was drenched with 1.13 inches of rain in two
hours. Hail drifted to 18 inches in East Los Angeles.
Waterspouts were sighted off Point Mugu and Oceanside.
            (20th-21st)
In 1987 Cold arctic air continued to invade the central U.S.
Eleven record lows were reported in the Great Plains
Region, including lows of 12 at Valentine NE, and
9 at Aberdeen SD. Temperatures warmed rapidly during the
day in the Southern and Central Plains Region. Goodland
KS warmed from a morning low of 24 degrees to an
            afternoon high of 75 degrees.
In 1988 Joan, the last hurricane of the season, neared the coast
of Nicaragua packing 125 mph winds. Joan claimed more
than 200 lives as she moved over Central America, and
total damage approached 1.5 billion dollars. Crossing
more than 40 degrees of longitude, Hurricane Joan never
strayed even one degree from the 12 degree north
            parallel.
In 1989 Unseasonably cold weather continued to grip the south
central and southeastern U.S. Twenty cities reported
record low temperatures for the date, including Calico
Rock AR with a reading of 26 degrees, and Daytona Beach
FL with a low of 41 degrees. Squalls in the Great Lakes
Region finally came to an end, but not before leaving
Marquette MI buried under 12.7 inches of snow, a record
            24 hour total for October.

In 1985 A guest on the top floor of a hotel in Seattle WA was
seriously injured while talking on the phone when
lightning struck. Several persons are killed each year
when the electrical charge from a lightning bolt travels
            via telephone wiring.
In 1987 Yakutat AK surpassed their previous all-time yearly
precipitation total of 190 inches. Monthly records
were set in June with 17 inches, in September with
70 inches, and in October with more than 40 inches.
Twenty-two cities in the eastern U.S., most in the
southeast, reported record low temperatures for the date.
Morning lows of 30 at Athens GA, 28 at Birmingham AL, and
23 at Pinson AL, were the coldest of record for so early
in the season. Showers produced heavy rain in southern
California, with amounts ranging up to five inches at
Blue Jay. Flash flooding resulted in two deaths, ten
injuries, and more than a million dollars damage.
In 1988 A "nor'easter" swept across the coast of New England.
Winds gusted to 75 mph, and large waves and high tides
caused extensive shoreline flooding. A heavy wet snow
blanketed much of eastern New York State, with a foot of
            snow reported in Lewis County.
In 1989 A storm system moving out of the Gulf of Alaska brought
rain to the Northern and Central Pacific Coast Region,
with snow in some of the mountains of Oregon, and wind
gusts to 60 mph along the Oregon coast. Six cities in
Florida reported record low temperatures for the date,
including Tallahassee with a reading of 34 degrees.

In 1761 A hurricane struck southeastern New England. It was the
most violent in thirty years. Thousands of trees blocked
roads in Massachsuetts and Rhode Island.
In 1843 "Indian Summer" was routed by cold and snow that brought
sleighing from the Poconos to Vermont. A foot of snow
blanketed Haverhill NH and Newberry VT, and 18 to 24
inches were reported in some of the higher elevations.
Snow stayed on the ground until the next spring. (22nd-
            23rd)
In 1987 Thirteen cities in the southeastern U.S. reported record
low temperatures for the date. It marked the sixth
record low of the month for Greer SC and Columbia SC, and
the ninth of the month for Montgomery AL. Showers and
thunderstorms deluged Corpus Christi TX with five inches
of rain. Winnemucca NV reported their first measurable
rain in ninety-two days, and Yakima WA reported a record
96 days in a row without measurable rainfall.
In 1988 Denver CO reported their first freeze of the autumn, and
Chicago IL reported their first snow. In Texas,
afternoon highs of 93 degrees at Austin and San Antonio
            were records for the date.
In 1989 A storm moving out of the Gulf of Alaska brought rain and
high winds to the Central Pacific Coast Region. High
winds in Nevada gusted to 67 mph at Reno, and
thunderstorms around Redding CA produced wind gusts to 66
mph. Locally heavy rains in the San Francisco area
caused numerous mudslides, adding insult to injury for
            earthquake victims.
In 2015 Category 5 Hurricane Patricia, in the Eastern Pacific
basin, became the strongest hurricane ever recorded in
the National Hurricane Center's area of responsibility,
with data reported by Hurricane Hunter Aircraft, of 200
mph winds, gusts to 245 mph, and a central pressure of
879 millibars, or 25.96 inches. The remnants of Patricia
caused widespread, extensive flooding across south Texas
just days after landfall in southwest Mexico.

Wisconsin overnight, with five inches reported at Poplar
Lake MN and Gunflint Trail MN. Thunderstorm rains caused
flash flooding in south central Arizona, with street
flooding reported around Las Vegas NV. Strong
northwesterly winds gusting to 50 mph downed some trees

The thunderstorms also produced wind gusts to 75 mph at
Jennings LA, and the driver of a vehicle was killed by a
falling tree near Coushatta LA. Snow squalls in the
Lower Great Lakes Region produced heavy snow in western
New York State, with 12 inches reported at Colden.

southern California. Many buildings were destroyed, and
an FAA Air Traffic Control Center was shut down for a
time in the area, disrupting many flights in and out of
the region. An NFL Football game originally scheduled in

tornado removed the roof. They escaped as the house blew
            away.
In 1987 Showers and thunderstorms produced locally heavy rain
from Virginia to New York State. Fallen leaves made
roads and sidewalks slick, and also clogged sewers.
Rainfall totals of 1.55 inches at Newark NJ, 1.54 inches
at Harrisburg PA, 1.27 inches at Scranton PA, and 1.22

snow in the mountains east of Salt Lake City UT. "Indian
Summer" continued in the Lower Ohio Valley and the Upper
Great Lakes Region. Afternoon highs of 71 at Marquette

In 1936 The temperature at Layton NJ dipped to 9 above zero to
establish a state record for the month of October.
In 1971 A severe early season blizzard raged across the Plateau
Region and Rocky Mountain Region. Heavy snow blocked
railroads and interstate highways, and record cold
accompanied the storm. Lander WY received 27 inches of
snow, and the temperature at Big Piney WY plunged to
            15 degrees below zero.
In 1987 Thunderstorms over the San Joaquin Valley of California
produced 0.75 inch of rain in thirty minutes at
Placerville, and caused numerous power outages due to
lightning. Rain began to diminish in the northeastern
U.S., but some flooding continued in Vermont, eastern New
York State and northern New Jersey. One inch rains in
Vermont clogged culverts and sewers with fallen leaves,
resulting in erosion of dirt roads.
In 1988 Arctic cold invaded the north central U.S. Valentine NE

Germany, the Netherlands, and Denmark, killing at least
13 people. Fallen trees blocked rail lines and roads
across southern England. Widespread power outages were
noted, with winds near 100 mph recorded on the Isle Of
            Wright, off the southern coast.

Arkansas killing 20 persons and causing half a million
            dollars damage.
In 1956 A violent tornado, or series of tornadoes, moved along a
path more than 100 miles in length from south of North
Platte NE into Rock County NE. It was an unusually late
occurence so far north and west in the U.S. for such a
            storm.
In 1987 Severe thunderstorms in Arizona produced wind gusts to 86
mph at the Glendale Airport near Phoenix, baseball size
hail and 70 mph winds at Wickenburg, and up to an inch of
rain in fifteen minutes in Yavapai County and northwest
Maricopa County. Arizona Public Service alone reported
2.5 million dollars damage from the storms.
In 1988 Wintry weather prevailed in the Upper Midwest. South
Bend IN equalled their record for October with a low of
23 degrees. International Falls MN reported a record low
of 11 degrees in the morning, then dipped down to
8 degrees above zero late in the evening.
In 1989 Thunderstorms developing along a cold front produced
severe weather in Oklahoma and north central Texas during
the late afternoon and evening hours. Thunderstorms in
Oklahoma produced weak tornadoes near Snyder and
Davidson, and produced hail two inches in diameter at
Altus. Large hail damaged 60 to 80 percent of the cotton
crop in Tillman County OK. Nine cities in the northeastern
U.S. reported record high temperatures for the date as
readings warmed into the 70s. For Marquette MI, it marked
their fifth straight day of record warmth. Arctic cold
invaded the western U.S. Lows of 7 above at Alamosa CO and
9 above at Elko NV were records for the date.
In 2003 A powerful storm battered Washington state, knocking out
power to thousands of people, with battering waves severely
damaging a dockside restaurant in Mukilteo. While no one
was injured at the restaurant, one person was killed by a
            falling tree elsewhere.
In 2011 (29th-30th) An intense nor'easter brought heavy wet snow to
much of the northeast U.S. from Pennsylvania and Virginia
into Maine and the rest of New England. Over 4 million
people were without power, and at least 5 fatalities
occurred in the storm. The heavy wet snow falling onto
trees that still had fall foliage on them, brought many
branches crashing down onto roads and power lines.
Widespread travel disruptions occurred as well. It was
earliest winter (October) snow on record in some areas,
with many areas having more than a foot or more of snow.
In 2012 (22nd-31st) After affecting the Caribbean, causing flooding
and deaths in Jamaica, Haiti, and the Bahamas,
Post-Tropical Cyclone Sandy made landfall at Atlantic City,
New Jersey, with 80 mph winds, and a pressure of 946
millibars (27.93"). A large area of warnings for high
winds, flooding, and even blizzard conditions was across
much of the eastern US from the Carolinas into New
England. Millions of people were without power, and all
modes of transportation to and from the northeast US were
shut down, because of the storm.

In 1925 Nashville TN was blanketed with an inch of snow, their
            earliest measurable snow of record.
In 1947 The Donora PA smog disaster finally came to an end. For
five days an inversion trapped impurities in the lower
atmosphere over the Monongahela Valley killing
20 persons, and leaving more than 2000 others sick.
            (26th-30th)
In 1987 Severe thunderstorms in Oklahoma produced golf ball size
hail and wind gusts to 74 mph near the town of Gould.
Unseasonably warm weather prevailed across the central
U.S. Temperatures warmed into the 80s form Texas to the
            Lower Missouri Valley.
In 1988 Ten cities in the Upper Midwest reported record low
temperatures for the date. The morning low of 20 at
South Bend IN was a record for October, and lows of 18 at
Grand rapids MI and 20 at Fort Wayne In equalled records
for October. The low of 2 above zero at International
Falls MN smashed their previous record for the date by 11
degrees. Syracuse NY received 2.9 inches of snow to
establish a record for October with 5.7 inches for the
            month.
In 1989 Temperatures again soared into the 70s in the
northeastern U.S. The record high of 73 degrees at
Alpena MI marked their sixth straight day of record
warmth. In the western U.S., Klamath Falls OR reported
a record low of 19 degrees.

In 1846 Eighty-seven pioneers were trapped by early snows in the
Sierra Nevada Mountains that piled five feet deep, with
30 to 40 foot drifts. Just 47 persons survived the
            "Donner Pass Tradgedy".
In 1950 Unseasonably warm weather prevailed in the central U.S.
for Halloween. The temperature soared to 83 degrees at
Minneapolis MN, their warmest reading of record for so
            late in the season.
In 1965 Fort Lauderdale FL was deluged with 13.81 inches of rain,
which brought their rainfall total for the month of
October to an all-time record of 42.43 inches. (30th-
            31st)
In 1987 Halloween was a wet one in the southwestern U.S.
Heavy rain in southern California resulted in numerous
mudslides. Weather-related auto accidents resulted in
three deaths and twenty-five injuries. Mount Wilson CA
received 3.14 inches of rain in 24 hours. Yakima WA
reported measurable rainfall for the first time since the
18th of July. The 103 day long dry spell was their
            longest of record.
In 1988 Twenty-two cities in the northeastern U.S. reported
record low temperatures for the date. The low of 19 at
Cleveland OH was a record for October, and morning lows
of 21 at Allentown PA and Bridgeport CT tied October
records. Nine cities in the southwestern U.S. reported
record high temperatures for the date, including Phoenix
AZ with a reading of 96 degrees. Showers made Halloween
a soggy one in the southeastern U.S.
In 1989 Halloween night was a soggy one in New England. Showers
in the northeastern U.S. produced more than an inch and
a half of rain in six hours at some locations.
An invasion of cold arctic air brought an abrupt end to a
week of "Indian Summer" type weather in the Great Lakes
Region, and brought snow and subzero wind chill readings
to the Northern Plains. In Colorado, Alamosa was the
cold spot in the nation with a record low of two degrees
above zero, and a Halloween night storm brought 3 to 6
inches of snow to the Front Range, and 5 to 10 inches to
the nearby foothills. Icy streets around Denver the next
morning made for a rather spooky commute.
In 1999 Little Rock, AR experienced its wettest Halloween ever,
with over 3 inches of rain in some parts of the state,
more than double the previous rainfall record for the
            date.
In 2013 A large area of rain and thunderstorms...some severe...
extended from Texas east into the Lower Mississippi Valley
region. Many areas from Texas into Louisiana got over 6
inches of rain, with a flood emergency being declared in
Austin, Texas. Several tornadoes were also noted across
southeast Texas, Louisiana, and into Mississippi.

In 1861 A hurricane near Cape Hatteras NC battered a Union fleet
of ships attacking Carolina ports, and produced high
tides and high winds in New York State and New England.
In 1966 Santa Ana winds fanned fires, and brought record
November heat to parts of coastal California.
November records included 86 degrees at San Francisco, 97
degrees at San Diego, and 101 degrees at the
international airport in Los Angeles. Fires claimed
the lives of at least 16 firefighters.
In 1968 A tornado touched down west of Winslow AZ, but did little
            damage in an uninhabited area.
In 1987 Early morning thunderstorms in central Arizona produced
hail an inch in diameter at Williams and Gila Bend,
and drenched Payson with 1.86 inches of rain. Hannagan
Meadows AZ, meanwhile, was blanketed with three inches of
snow. Unseasonably warm weather prevailed across the
Ohio Valley. Afternoon highs of 76 at Beckley WV, 77 at
Bluefield WV, and 83 at Lexington KY were records for
            November.
In 1988 Low pressure brought gales and locally heavy rain to the
northeastern U.S. The rainfall total of 1.46 inches at
Newark NJ was a record for the date. New York City was
soaked with more than two inches of rain.
In 1989 A strong cold front ushered snow and arctic air into the
north central U.S. Snow whitened North Dakota and the
Central High Plains Region. Up to five inches of snow
blanketed Denver CO. Yellowstone Park WY was the cold
spot in the nation with a morning low of 4 degrees below
            zero.
In 1991 In Charleston, WV visibility was 1/8 mile in smoke and
falling ash from brush fires that started in late October.

In 1946 A heavy wet snow began to cover the Southern Rockies. Up
to three feet of snow blanketed the mountains of
New Mexico, and a 31 inch snow at Denver CO caused roofs
            to collapse.
In 1961 The temperature at Atlanta GA reached 84 degrees to
            establish a record for November.
In 1966 A storm brought 18 inches of snow to Celia KY

record first established at Bowling Green.
In 1976 Two light aircraft were struck by lightning while in
flight over Boston, Massachusetts. There were no injuries.
In 1987 A dozen cities, mostly in the Ohio Valley, reported
record high temperatures for the date. Record highs
included 83 degrees at Paducah KY and 84 degrees at
Memphis TN. Temperatures reached 70 degrees as far north
as southern Lower Michigan. Showers and thundershowers
over southern Florida, associated with a tropical
depression, produced 4.77 inches of rain at Tavernier,
located in the Upper Floirda Keys.
In 1988 A very intense low pressure system brought heavy rain,
snow, and high winds, to parts of the northeastern U.S.
Portland ME established a record for November with
4.52 inches of rain in 24 hours, and winds along the
coast of Maine gusted to 74 mph at Southwest Harbor.
Heavy snow blanketed parts of northern Vermont and
upstate New York, with fifteen inches reported at Spruce
            Hill NY.
In 1989 Squalls in the Upper Great Lakes Region the first three
days of the month buried Ironwood MI under 46 inches of
snow, and produced 40 inches at Hurley WI. Arctic cold
invaded the Southern Plains Region. Midland TX reported
a record low of 22 degrees.
In 1997 An F-3 tornado hit New Smyrna Beach, Florida causing

In 1927 A great Vermont flood occurred. Tropical rains deluged
the Green Mountain area of Vermont causing the worst
flood in the history of the state. Torrential rains, up
to 15 inches in the higher elevations, sent streams on a
rampage devastating the Winooski Valley. Flooding
claimed 200 lives and caused 40 million dollars damage.
The town of Vernon reported 84 deaths. Flooding left up
to eight to ten feet of water in downtown Montpelier VT.
            (2nd-4th)
In 1979 100 mph chinook winds roared east of the Rockies in MT
and CO. In Boulder, winds blew from zephyrs to 90 mph in
            seconds.
In 1985 A super wet Gulf storm dumped upwards of fifteen inches
of rain in the mountains of Virginia and West Virginia
causing devastating damage and claiming forty lives.
In 1987 Thirty-two cities in the eastern and south central U.S.
reported record high temperatures for the date. Highs of
74 degrees at Portland ME and 86 degrees at Fort Smith AR
equalled November records. It was the fourth day of
record warmth for Beckley WV, Memphi TN and Paducah KY.
A cold front ushered much colder air into the north
central U.S. Gale force winds lashed all five Great
            Lakes.
In 1988 Thunderstorms developing ahead of a fast moving cold
front produced severe weather over the Tennessee Valley
and the Central Gulf Coast States during the afternoon
and evening hours, and into the next morning. Thunder-
storms spawned nineteen tornadoes, including eleven in
Mississippi. The last of the nineteen tornadoes killed
a woman in her mobile home in Lee FL. A tornado in
Culbert AL injured sixteen people, and caused two million
dollars damage. Thunderstorms also produced baseball
size hail in Alabama. Unseasonably hot air prevailed
south of the cold front. McAllen TX was the hot spot in
the nation with a high of 102 degrees.
In 1989 Snow and high winds plagued parts of Colorado and
Wyoming. Winds gusted to 71 mph near Wheatland WY,
and reached 80 mph west of Fort Collins CO. Up to five
inches of snow blanketed Yellowstone Park WY closing many
roads. Snow also blanketed northern Minnesota, with
            seven inches reported at Baudette.
In 2001 Hurricane Michelle, the strongest of the 2001 Hurricane
Season, slammed into southern Cuba with 135 mph winds.
Originally a tropical depression off the coast of
Nicauragua and Honduras several days earlier, Michelle
rapidly intensified over the northwest Caribbean Sea.
After crossing Cuba, she skirted the Florida Keys, and
hit the Bahamas before heading into the Atlantic Ocean
            toward Bermuda.
