The car analogy is good up to a point. With cars, quality can
play a bit factor over time as the car deteriorates. Software
doesn't really deteriorate. With software "efficiency and
function" stay the same and do not change.

I've found Video Download Helper the best one around for
general use. You Tube video and audio downloader for You
Tube. Firefox offers multiple video/audio d/l programs
as add on's.

I used VDH for a while. I stopped using it for some reason
(probably because I think it triggered pop-ups or stopped
working properly when I had my script-killer, adblocker and
privacy badger tools enabled).

I discovered that youtube-dl seemed to work on many of the non-
YT sites too, so I just reverted to youtube-dl for those. But
youtube-dl doesn't work with the embedded vids at solie.org.

I've had to re-install a few times (PC shop wiped the HD when repairing),
new PC/laptop, etc.
When I do have to re-install for some reason I make a back up of my
bookmarks just in case.

I use Chrome now, as it didn't lock up on Facebook as Firefox and
Opera have done (and I really didn't care for Microsoft Edge). Yet,
Chrome won't let you download from some sites (paranoia??).

I doubt there will ever be a perfect browser for everyone.
I just hope we never come to the point when there is a one-size-fits-all browser.
I've used them all at one time or another and find FF fits my needs.

We're getting close to that it seems. Now that Microsoft has switched to using the Chromium engine, we're down to three browser engines that I'm aware of:

Webkit: Safari (Mac, iPhone & iPad)
Blink: Chromium (Chrome, Edge, Vivaldi, Brave, Opera, etc)
Gecko: Firefox


According to statcounter.com: Chrome has the most browser market share at 70.1% followed by Safari at 18.8% and Firefox all the way down at 3.5%.

(Chrome = Chrome + Samsung Internet + Opera. It's unclear whether Edge on this list differentiates between Edge Classic & Chromium Edge).

I'm surprised that there wasn't any mechanism to help you
reinstate that same account with a fresh pw.

+string, where +string never changes (unless I have to add a
number or a special char).

The bookmarks weren't the issue. It was the 2FA app, or lack thereof.

What I hate on some sites are pop-ups telling me to turn turn off my adblocker programs. Nope, just click the box to go away and I'm good.

FoxNews, and so many other sites do that. The thing is, what if an ad
gets malware embedded in it, and my system gets infected?? Who do I blame??
I'd rather block the ads, and have more than one ad blocker. Ironically, Mozilla Firefox says that the IObit Surfing Ad Blocker is malware...yet, neither Edge or Chrome protest with it. But, Firefox was so darn slow on Facebook.

The main use of Facebook for me now is during selected ham radio traffic nets...and when I have to post something related to square dancing to the state organization group. While I still get folks via Messenger, I don't
have a friends list (per se) anymore.

Before I used adblocker programs the screen would be so full of
pop-ups I couldn't read anything, do anything, etc.

That was the problem, I knew the password, but I couldn't provide the 2FA code they were looking for (which would have been sent to an iOS device signed into my Apple ID) or a backup code (which was supposed to be saved in my password manager). Since I didn't have either of those things, Apple couldn't/wouldn't help me.

I don't participate in any 2FA, so I don't need to deal with it
too much, except that my MBNA credit card accounts force 2FA
where upon the code gets sent to my choice of Text SMS or a
phone call. I most often pick the latter. So.. I don't
understand why you couldn't receive you auth code via SMS to
any phone device you choose.

I have had problems from time to time remembering a USID/PW.
I use Roboform on my PC/laptop for a lot general information. (No bank related information, CC, etc). Also Firefox has a built in USID/PW option.
I was happy when IOS 14 came out where I could default my phone from
Safari to Firefox since its backed up on their server and any bookmark changes will appear across my devices.

Nobody I guess.
I use Norton (paid version) and it seems to do a good job of not letting suspicious things get past.

Yup, I do the same thing. I don't know 99% of my passwords, they all randomly generated garbleygook and the ones I do have to know (ones I can't use a password manager to enter) are all "passphrases" with some extra padding.

I have used RoboForm for years. I have found it to be very reliable. I can use it across
all of my computers, and the one program handles mine and my wife's logins.

What's worse is if you can't see what you're typing (best if you're in
the room alone, and you know you don't have a keylogger embedded in your system), and you enter a wrong character, you'll never know it.
