"Call of the Wild" was the domesticated dog who was turned into a sled dog, and then went wild.
"White Fang" was the wild wolf/dog that was domesticated.

I saw where the young actor from Old Yeller had passed away.

Read yesterday Tommy Kirk, 79, who played the kid in the movie, died.

Old Yeller developed rabies and could not be allowed to live
like that.
Ok, so the ending is more bittersweet than sad?
Kind action, but sad to lose one's lifelong pal?
Maybe I'll try it -- I developed an allergy reading "Where
The Red Ferns Grow"
I don't know Tommy Kirk from Captain Kirk, but I'm still sad that an actor from such a well known & loved movie is gone. . .

That's just about how it goes. It was the 1st film I saw in
theatre. I cried a bunch near the end. But the story is
pretty good about a loyal dog.

He was a child actor with Disney in the '50s and '60s. Once he outgrew "the cute kid" phase he drifted off into other things.
So often actors are type cast and once they out grow that role they are cast aside for the next one. Few go from child actor to adult actor with ease.
The same with others, once their looks depart they are cast aside,
unless they do character parts.
Character actors are the longest lasting ones, who can do any number of roles.

As for William Shatner, I thought he was better doing commercials for "Priceline". <G>
Is the movie good itself, or am I better to find the book first?

I haven't read the book. I hear that the film changed some
things around. But I read elsewhere that the general consensus
is that the book has much more stuff going on is more
interesting.
