I've seen similar things. My grandparents lived through the Great Depression.
They had minor quirks like lots of seasoned firewood in the basement - just in
case the heat gave out, don't ya know, and a "fruit cellar" stocked with lots of canned goods.

My grandmother who lived through those times also had the canned goods in
the cellar... items she likely canned herself, in Ball and Mason jars...
and a few other quirks that seem odd now.

Although my father was born after the depression, I believe he inherited
some of those quirks from his parents. One thing about "the depression" is that most of us learned that it ended about the time American got involved
in WWII. In Apalachia, even the outskirts of it, it hung on a lot longer,
so maybe he did actually live through the reminants of it.

Reading this over, I am wondering if the original poster meant to post this
in the FUNNY echo or the MEMORIES echo? It is not necessarily a humorous topic. ;)

This auntie of mine had two quirks; first of all, she had an aztec surname,
although from my understanding such a thing doesnt actually exists.
It was said to me by my grandparents and my dad as well, so who knows

Second quirk; she wanted to be called "Camila" For some reason. Her real name was "Charito" and i never understood why the change in names.

She said that she was an spiritual dog, or something of the sort, and i never actually cared to much. She wasnt senile, believed in the Catholic church, and in most aspects, was your average old Mexican women.
She died when i was around 8 years old. By that time, she no longer lived alone.

Interesting. Growing up, one of my sisters (I had 4!) went through a phase where she wanted to be called something other than her given name. If I
recall correctly, the names were variations/nicknames of her own name so it wasn't too drastic.

M E M O R I E S
My father and mother, as so it tends to happen with most families nowadays, splitted when i was 3 years old.

My dad always went to pick me up on Holidays, but since the city he lived in and the one where i resided where too far from eachother, we'd stay in my town for a day or two before sailing again. Just to get enough rest, ya know?

Every time he got to town, we would go to the house of an aunt of mine, which, oh boy, let me tell you, was humbling for a little child like myself.

Only thing that you could find on that place was an old couch, a big kitchen table, a big television with around 3 channels and a nice oven.

The only thing you could eat were eggs, nothing more!!!

Maybe it sounds as if i were whining, but this aunt of mine was, errr, weird

NO furniture, NO pictures, NO memories, NOTHING. The bare minimum anyone needs to live and thats all

Do you remember residue processing, from half life? That chapter with trash, shit and rusty walls? That was my aunties bathroom; industrial door handle and everything. BIG DOOR, i mean, REALLY BIG DOOR. a full gorilla sized and baobab tall door im talking about.

Inside the bathroom, you could find, always, a little bar of soap, full of spiders webs and maybe a dead ant, of course.

On the floor, debris and little concrete pieces that due to the passage of time, had fallen to the floor, and a little window.

Ooooh, what humbling days those where! I used to spend all the time in that house either watching the clock, (which had no batteries in it, of course) Or sipping through the terrible channels on TV.

Their friends all had their quirks too and the "austere life" was one of them.

Later in life, I realized it was just the mental residue from living through lean times.
