• Real Modem on VOIP?

    I have a USB V.everything modem, the big black one. Has anyone had
    any luck using and old modem on VOIP? You would think there would be
    something to convert VOIP to POT.

    The problem with running a dialup modem via VoIP is that digigal, a la VoIP, doesn't allow for the full signal bandwidth that analog does so you're be restricted to about 2400BPS ("baud") at best. Some have been able to get more but that's not a common thing.

    In short, analog dialup uses a sine wave but digital converts the sine wave into a square wave, therefore basically cutting the signal "at the knees", if you will. It's greatly oversimplifed here but that's the the basic idea.

    I am actually actively working on this project right now. So far not sure if the Grandstream HT802 is going to get the job done or not. I cannot even keep a 9600 baud connection alive for more than a minute or so like I could with an older Vonage box that I have. I am journaling my progress on my YouTube channel ( /bollingholt ) and have a new one to edit and upload hopefully during lunch tomorrow at work. I love dialup modems.

    I have looked into it and I have read about the limits and obsticles.
    I would just have though with all the work being done with digital
    in the HAM community you would think there would be a way. Look at all
    the cross-moding on the XLX reflectors, plus bridging ASL to digital.
    In my opion, I think it could be done, there is just no desire to do it.
    After all there is no real need to do it, it's just nostalgic, and
    that is not much of a reason to start a project, I guess.

    I can't get a copper POTS line here unless I go through a CLEC. Once I start working and can afford it, I'm dusting off one of my USR v.everything external Couriers (the big black modems) and putting a dialup line. My BBS also supports PPP connections so that would be fun to try if there's interest. Back when I disd have a dialup line, I actually had a lot of callers using that line.

    I have several downlinks who want to use POTS with my stsyem, interestingly enough.

    It's not so much the want to do it, it's overcoming the laws of physics.

    After all there is no real need to do it, it's just nostalgic, and

    I was a corporate phone guy for years; I always love peeking in when I
    see a telco tech working on a B-Box, those locking line distribution
    cabinets you see scattered around neighborhoods.

    I saw one in my neighborhood open recently with a cherry picker parked
    nearby. Slowed down to look in the cabinet, and it was all fiber. I
    didn't see a single pair of cross-connect wire.

    I'm looking to get internet for my cabin up in the mountains. It's near
    Lake Tahoe, the switching office is about 3 miles away. They used to
    offer DSL with dial tone, but now they eliminated the dial tone, changed
    the name and raised the price. Gotta love AT&T!

    I'm not sure. I'm trying to talk to some of theSysOps who run these boards. I know my phone company will not give me a POTS line :(

    So what your saying is, a ATA can convert digital to analog to ring
    a phone and it good enough for human voice, but fails providing what
    the modem need to function at high baud. That makes sense.
    There is some info out there about ATA's and fax working but I suppose
    fax being a low baud device is why.

    You can still get copper lines, usually through a CLEC. Many businesses

    Any idea what the going rate is for a POT line these days?

    the problem is.. you might be old school copper between you and your local grocery store, gas station, or friend down the street, but the second you call somewhere slightly further you're 'transparently' dumped onto VOIP anyways.
