I use bash. ;) Seriously, it is _very_ rare for me to be using X on my Linux boxes, as they all perform server functions.
IceWM
Is that a minimalistic tiling environment?

same here and i just dont like any linux gui. they all seem like
they're trying to copy windows or some other os.

You are not alone. I also am bash interface, usually headless or
remote on server machines. Once in a great while I will use a gui, and then get frustrated because I have to hunt menus instead of just typing the command or editing a file.

You sound like me. My Linux boxes are also headless, and I'm generally logged in via SSH. Some, I can fire up a GUI and use VNC, but it's very rare for me to do that. :)
I'll have to take some words from the book of old Angus Mcleod, my linux box had 2 heads, I shall call him Zaphod.. wonder what happened of Angus, if he' still in Barbados living the life.. or what.. we used to bitch like a couple school girls on here, but I liked him pretty well.

I mainly use KDE at home, but at home, I'm like you guys, just ssh'ing intoEr 'but at home' should be 'but at work', for anyone that cares...

I'm in the same boat, at least at work. I rarely have a need for a gui (and in some cases we had to uninstall X on machines where they weren't excluded for whatever reason).

I guess you could call it that. I like it because it does not eat up much memory and I can use it on most older machines that otherwise could not handle an X windowed environment.

I remember managing linux boxes when all Windows did on my desktop was
run multiple sessions of TeraTerm. Like 10 or 15, in a couple of time zones. ;)

When I worked in IT, I spent a lot of time in SSH, though I did have a desktop
which ran either KDE or GNOME. It's been years since those days though, so I can't recall for sure. :)

SSH is my friend. ;)

LXDE is a nice low-memory environment. it's the WM for Lubuntu, and on some of
my boxes idles in 140 megs or so. Looks like old gnome, and has a few eye-candy
things you can do. I settle for a transparent bar at the bottom and Conky on my
low-end boxes.

Yeah, I have installed that one on a box for someone else who needed an environment that would "do" a little more for them than the more-spartan IceWM would but that would still not eat up memory like some of the flashier environments. I like it.

I feel a little silly, since I've outgrown my single core pentium laptop with 1
gig of memory and now run LXDE on a duale core laptop with 8 gigs. Still idles
in about 170 megs of RAM. :)

go in terms of a deksotp environment. LXDE just isn't for me. Maybe for
a server but for a desktop experience, nah.

If it works for you, there is nothing silly about it. :) It is nice to run an OS that gives you such a choice.
