• Linux WiFi WTF

From ROB MCCART@VERT/CAPCITY2/CAPCITY to ALL on Sun Nov 29 16:56:00 2009
    Something odd...

A friend of mine bought one of those Acer Netbooks last year that
runs that Linpus version of Linux..
One thing he's discovered that makes no sense to me is that the
WiFi on it is really bad.. The exact same unit with the Windows OS
has about double the range. This strikes me as odd. I'd expect WiFi
to either work 100% or not at all if there were a problem.
Any thoughts on what could result in a weaker system ?

Different firmware blobs with the different drivers.

I did some quick research, and came across an article on the web that describes someone dumping Linpus for Fedora 10. There's a section
called "Making the WiFi LED Work" in which he describes installing
madwifi, and how it's a better driver than the default.
Be warned, on another website I read someone mentioning madwifi
breaking their Linpus wifi, so you may want to do more research. On the
other hand, apparently Fedora 10 works great, so I would recommend this switch. From what it looks like, though, it's a bit of a hassle to get
    it installed.

It may operate in an enhanced mode (connecting to a supported router), or other advanced features that the linux driver doesn't support (It's pretty common actually).
