No, Windows 7 is still supported until 2020; Microsoft will provide only security fixes at this point.

I stand corrected. Microsoft quit selling Windows 7; however, Microsoft will still support (security and general fixes) Windows 7 until 2020.

why would it be dead.. hell I still use XP.. 10 is pretty cool imho only if you operate in developer mode (or explorer) or whatever they call it.. I have it on one of the laptops in another room that is used only for web browsing now.

for myself, I stick with Linux, My BBS is on a pure stock, stripped XP machine that I paid 7 bucks for at a thrift shop.. In the future I'm kinda leaning to get a PI for most of my BBS and keep my games on the XP machine and rlogin to them, and provide rlogin to other services who offer them (unless I want to spend the time to fool with dosemu) I mainly like this old beat up box for one thing.. the modem.. It brings back so much nostalgia when someone calls the BBS.

XP has a couple of options out there -- XP Embedded is supported, still, and if you do a registry tweak, Windows Update still works.

MicroXP and TinyXP are cut down versions of XP, missing some key features like Windows Update, Internet Explorer and other non-core components. The notion is that you're lessening the vulnerability footprint by taking most everything out, so it's safer than running XP. I'll leave the legality of these distributions to the lawyers in the house.

Another option is to use XPLite to customize your installation media. With it you can make a new CD and customize exactly which components you want to install.

Actually did'nt realize those existed, but that was pretty much what I have done with my version of XP is taken explorer and a lot of other components out that the BBS just does'nt need. I would presume the BBS would run with no issues for years if I did'nt take it down for upgrades/backups etc... I've never once had XP crash on me, and the BBS has only crashed as an effect of something I have screwed up :)

i dont believe micro* and tiny* has the goal of being more secure; they
just want it to be as small as possible and run with very little resources.

As for the security patches, I'm pretty sure you have to manually download them from Microsoft. Speaking of Windows 10, it has nice eye candy and they've really fixed a lot of the issues they've had with windows 8 like the whole metro debacle, but after a month or so all the eye candy gets annoying. I like the notification bar with the settings right there, but even after you think you've turned it off, I get spammed with notifications from every system app imaginable, microsoft edge is frustratingly slow, it likes to hang, now it has some stupid advert that pops up on the icon in the dock for 2x browswer points trying to get me not to use chrome. The worst culprit is the background data and telemetry always going back to microsoft. Even if you set the ethernet port in the registry as a metered connection, I think microsoft believes its safe to grab a few hundred MB of data on the side. Doesn't work for me when my internet is a tethered connection routed through a linux box back out to my home network. Those 5GB of high speed data are precious, then I get relegated to 128kbps. I've switched back to booting into my Arch Linux partition, because at least I know there isn't anything pulling data and sending data to the internet without my say so first.

From my experiences with Windows 10, I do the following to increase stability: 1) Let the system run 24/7 -- the updates are huge (sometimes approaching or exceeding a GB), they need time to download and install.
    2) Force updates when you have time and check the history for stuck updates. You may have to find the KB article giving the link to the update, download and install manually.
    3) Reboot when you can. Do not shutdown. Reboot.

This will kill your laptop battery. I suggest removing the battery if you have concerns.

I have seen more issues with stuck updates with Windows 10 than any other version.

    Good luck, YMMV.

That explain why I havent seen an update in a while.

i'm sure with techie all theses move from microsoft with windows 10 will have most of the geek transitioning to others os'es

Move to mac and linux 5 years ago and don't miss it. Run windows in Parallel on my mac for when I need to and on my vm server there is one vm for my tradewars game server and that's about it for windows with me, except at work.

Should try to see if I could make twgs run under wine.

Windows 7 is still getting security patches until 2020. I just fired up a Windows 7 VM on my Linux laptop and have a new appreciation for it - it feels much less "busy" when compared to 10, and the flat look of 10 I can take or leave.
