• Xfinity Data Caps

From Poindexter Fortran@VERT/REALITY to All on Fri Oct 14 10:01:00 2016
I just got the email from Xfinity that they're moving me onto a 1
Terabyte data plan, after not enforcing a 250 GB cap for the past few
    years.

Down at the bottom of the notice was the following gem:

"We offer two courtesy months so you will not be billed the first two
times you exceed a terabyte of usage."

I'd entertain any suggestions for the next 60 cap-free days...

Is this for storage or transfer?

Unless you care to start collecting all of the latest and greatest GPU intensive games (ie: Call of Duty collection, Tom Clancy collection, etc).. I don't think you're going to max that out very easily. :)

I think I'm paying around $160 for all the cable channels, telephone with unlimited nationwide calling, and 120/10 internet. Plus taxes and DVR fees.

That's not how it works, if Comcrap is in your area there is no alternative. They don't move into an area if there's another ISP (Time Warner, Google) in the area.

I've only read 2-3 lines of this thread, but I can tell I'm not gonna like it.

ISPs in america are embarrassing. I'm about a 15 minute drive from pF, but i'm in such a rural area I'm lucky that AT&T has a DSL uplink nearby (or whatever you call them), otherwise I'd be high and dry. At least pF gets 100mbps+ offerings.

Datacaps are a joke, AT&T would threaten to charge me for going over a data limit. I kept a data monitor on my router and figured out that AT&T counts
bad packets as well as good. I just call their support and ask for retention. What sucks is I can't say I'm gonna leave, because there's NOTHING else I can switch too, but I can hint that I might if they don't knock it off.

At least I can still get mail through port 25 on the BBS.

Huh? Comcast is in my area, but there are other ISPs too: Frontier, CenturyLink,
and maybe a couple others. So I don't know where you got that.

    Rural or City?

In rural and non-major cities (at least around here NorCal) while there may be 1-3 ISP options, there's USUALLY only ONE choice. In our areas you either have Comcast, and if you can't get Comcast, AT&T or Charter (which is on the AT&T network) are your only options, and with the later being only 6Mbps down tops at $50+ per month... You pretty much pray for Comcast. Which is sad because their service is horrible (but fast).

it's different in every area. sometimes they have no competition, sometimes they are up your ass when you use x amount of data. other places, they dont care.

that is why some people hate provider X and some say it's wonderful.

In my experience so far, ATT is only keeping customers because of their TV service (which was great when I had it), but their internet service is complete garbage around here compared to TWC.

So the people that don't mind slow internet but want great TV service for cheap, tend to stick with ATT. Those who only care about fast and reliable internet speeds, go with TWC. Then there's people in between that just switch back and forth between the two to jump into a cheap promotion when their bill goes up, rather than trying to deal with crappy customer service, which they both have. However, I've noticed at least *most* of the time with TWC, you end up with someone in customer service that speaks good English, whereas ATT who knows who you're going to get (someone in India maybe?).

I was thinking city. But I see what you mean. Smaller markets seem to have fewer companies, meaning less competition and less incentive to provide good service at a good deal.

I'm on the fence - 1TB is pretty generous these days, but knowing
Comcast they'll gradually lower it for new customers and force a lower
cap on you when you re-negotiate a contract.

I get 120 down and 20 up, but I'm sorely tempted to find one of the
reputable AT&T resellers like Sonic or Cruzio that would provide
reliable service at a lower speed without blocked ports.

I'm 5K feet from a CO, so I'm lucky with regards to DSL.

In most areas of California, one company "owns" the cable plant in the
area. In all of the state where I've lived you have your choice of one incumbent cable provider, DSL provided by the local exchange carrier,
DSL resold by third parties, and Satellite.

Update: So AT&T offered me uVerse service which they keep threatening to install at my home like every time I call them with an issue (I had an outage and wanted to talk to retention to try and get a lower rate).

This time however after I said sure. They actually installed uVerse, and forced me to give up the DSL modem I bought last year for one of their shitty uVerse modems.

Shocker of shockers, everything works, and from what I can tell from the modem report my speed cap is set to 12Mbps, I'm paying for 6Mbps and getting about 8Mbps, not to mention my upspeed is fast enough that I can stream to my iPhone via Plex at a low setting, but all be damn if it doesn't actually work.

I also got my monthly rate slashed and got them to refund me the hook up fee that they tried to wheasel in.

    No port blocks.
