• Jeb Bush Comes Out Against Encryption

From physalis17@VERT/DECKHEVN to All on Sat Aug 22 14:23:14 2015
Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush said Tuesday that encryption makes it harder for law enforcement to track down "evildoers" - and called for a "much better, more cooperative relationship" with Apple, Google, and other tech companies that are building uncrackable private communication apps into their new products.

How is it in the 21st century, that we don't have a presidential candidate that knows anything about computers and technology?! I don't know which is worse, this or Hillary Clinton thinking wiping a hard drive requires a cloth! Absolutely aggravating!

I think this mainly confirms what I already know/suspected. Long ago, I heard that the government got cell phone service companies to provide the government a back door into their encrypted connections so that the government could listen in to peoples' cell phone conversations. So I suppose Jeb Bush's comment comes as no surprise, except perhaps that Jeb Bush revealed that they actually are doing this.

I don't really understand the problem with "necroposting" - particularly around here where we aren't exactly drowning in a flood of new messages. If somebody wants to revive a 10+ year old thread, I can't see the harm in it; it might lead to more discussion, and at worst it's just another message to scroll past.

I agree. It could be that someone has something new/different to say about a particular topic, regardless of how old the thread is. Or perhaps someone is a new user and just wants to add their 2 cents. And if someone creates a brand-new
thread with a subject that has been discussed before, there would likely be someone who says "This has been discussed some time ago already." So I suppose there would always be people commenting negatively about it either way.

Why does that bother you so much? You seem to be the only one (or
one of the few people) I see complaining about that.

Yeah, it's not like we're downloading hundreds of messages over dialup, and some users may not have been lurking as long as MRO.

it just seems stupid and pointless for someone to dig up a 1-2 year msg to reply to something that had no real substance.
