Just a few months ago, I hadn't really ever heard of LulzSec. They're becoming big news, fast. Looks like while they and Anonymous were doing a bit of sniping at each other, something must've pissed them off recently, as they've decided to team up and are reaching out to hackers around the world to unite against governments.

This will be fairly interesting. LulzSec has a nice website with links to their activities via Twitter and Pirate Bay. They also have a phone number whereby you can request a hack...lol.

Check out the twitter feed, it's gonna be fun.

..and why are they doing this? This sounds like something an anarchy group would do. Unless they have a good reason, it seems like a nuisance.

..and why are they doing this? This sounds like something an anarchy group would do. Unless they have a good reason, it seems like a nuisance.

According to what I've read, they started mostly for the fun of it. Most white hats hack a site to show that it's not secured; apparently, this is part of what they do. The other part is for the laughs.

For instance, how many times has Sony and its various companies been hacked? After Sony supposedly tightened all its security, they went in and owned them again.

They put out their public number, and went on a hacking spree one day. I remember reading an article about that, where the author described why each site was hit. At the end of it, he mentioned Eve Online had been hit, and many gamers were pissed; no one really knew why. He posted an update a couple hours later relating a tweet by one of Lulz's followers to the effect of "Thanks guys, now my guy has to spend his time with ME!" lol

So far, most of their hacks have been kinda funny in a roundabout way. That's why they call themselves Lulz Security... Lulz = LOLs :)

    ----
oh yeah, and gotta especially love the one where they hacked pron.com, and got their user/password list... exposed several users logging in from governmental emails (one of which was apparently used for whitehouse staffers)...nice :)

A lot of gaming networks have been hit lately. SEGA Online was the most recent as far as I know.

There's really no such thing as security on the internet or in real life.

Turns out they weren't really around more than a few months ago. I'm sure you heard the news they've "concluded" their 50 day cruise.

Other hackers seem to be claiming to take up the cause. Apparently #AntiSec will probably continue on.

I checked out their IRC channel...seemed pretty chaotic in there, literally hundreds of people hanging out n stuff. I tried trolling a lil bit, went back in as fbi23 or some such thing and pretended to mess up private messaging some random dude about taking in this guy who was rambling on...didn't phase nobody, tho, and I got bored and left...lol

    Friends around the globe,

We are Lulz Security, and this is our final release, as today marks something meaningful to us. 50 days ago, we set sail with our humble ship on an uneasy and brutal ocean: the Internet. The hate machine, the love machine, the machine powered by many machines. We are all part of it, helping it grow, and helping it grow on us.

For the past 50 days we've been disrupting and exposing corporations, governments, often the general population itself, and quite possibly everything in between, just because we could. All to selflessly entertain others - vanity, fame, recognition, all of these things are shadowed by our desire for that which we all love. The raw, uninterrupted, chaotic thrill of entertainment and anarchy. It's what we all crave, even the seemingly lifeless politicians and emotionless, middle-aged self-titled failures. You are not failures. You have not blown away. You can get what you want and you are worth having it, believe in yourself.

While we are responsible for everything that The Lulz Boat is, we are not tied to this identity permanently. Behind this jolly visage of rainbows and top hats, we are people. People with a preference for music, a preference for food; we have varying taste in clothes and television, we are just like you. Even Hitler and Osama Bin Laden had these unique variations and style, and isn't that interesting to know? The mediocre painter turned supervillain liked cats more than we did.

Again, behind the mask, behind the insanity and mayhem, we truly believe in the AntiSec movement. We believe in it so strongly that we brought it back, much to the dismay of those looking for more anarchic lulz. We hope, wish, even beg, that the movement manifests itself into a revolution that can continue on without us. The support we've gathered for it in such a short space of time is truly overwhelming, and not to mention humbling. Please don't stop. Together, united, we can stomp down our common oppressors and imbue ourselves with the power and freedom we deserve.

So with those last thoughts, it's time to say bon voyage. Our planned 50 day cruise has expired, and we must now sail into the distance, leaving behind - we hope - inspiration, fear, denial, happiness, approval, disapproval, mockery, embarrassment, thoughtfulness, jealousy, hate, even love. If anything, we hope we had a microscopic impact on someone, somewhere. Anywhere.

Thank you for sailing with us. The breeze is fresh and the sun is setting, so now we head for the horizon.

    Let it flow...

Lulz Security - our crew of six wishes you a happy 2011, and a shout-out to all of our battlefleet members and supporters across the globe

There are many who say they found out how close the authorities are and made a graceful exit. For all they were doing, I have a hard time believing they were that young. If they're really smart, they're hacking from netbooks at semi-public locations, and communicating using alternate identities.
    Preferably in another country.

They are being pretty smart about their computers, though. I read a leaked IRC log wherein they discuss opening suspicious files in a VM, internetting through VPNs (supposedly untraceable; routed through hacked systems, maybe?), and after a hack they clean the server logfiles and subsequently wipe their systems and do a total reinstall.

That's a popular model for guerilla activity. However, most
of the time that guerilla model isn't coupled with constant
media exposure. LulzSec even woke up my in-laws, who are
otherwise technology stupid. I had to explain to them that
LulzSec isn't even very original, that groups like this exist
all the time, in secret, and do exactly what LulzSec did, but
with more profit-oriented alterior motives. "Your bank has
been hacked 50 times by now, and you don't know about it
because they paid the extortionists to keep quiet."

Netbooks that don't have SSDs in them. Wear leveling in SSDs
pretty much renders traditional "secure wipe" utilities useless.

Alternatively, run from a pre-created encrypted volume on an
SSD. Still no pure secrecy there, though, because there's
a cryptography algorithm in play. Crypto only serves to delay
exposure of secrets, not prevent their discovery completely.

With usb flash drives being as cheap as they are (only need 1 or 2GB drives; buy a bunch in volume!), create your OS image...burn it, use it, literally BURN it, repeat as necessary...

*nod* that would work as long as the fire was hot enough
to destroy the flash's gates. Might leave some questions
as to why you're burning flash chips though.
