They're mosely only a draw because of the userbase...neither is particularly attractive due to its design. I mostly use facebook these days to post news stories from my RSS aggregator, though now that even is mostly just linking to my wordpress where I find more flexibility. Like I said, primarily, people only use it because other people use it. Personally, I'd much rather see a system like Diaspora catch on among the masses thanks to the privacy and customizeability it affords. But, as the philosopher Jagger asserts, "you can't always get what you want." Phooey.

Facebook is what (some) BBSes, Compuserve, AOL, all aspired to be. Finally, your grandma can interact with her family and friends online. If you want to see (or share) photos and status of anyone you (used to) know, facebook is the site to use.

YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook will combine to form a new company called YouTwitFace. ;)

Seriously, I think Facebook is a good way to keep up with what your friends
are up to and keep in contact with them, as well as share what you're up to. However, Facebook lends itself really easily to drama - Sometimes people use Facebook to post nasty things about other people; in other cases, since much
of what you do there is public, you might want to be careful about what you comment on or click "like" on, etc., because people (or at least just your Facebook "friends") will (usually) be able to see your activity one way or another.
Personally, I haven't thought of anything really useful for me to post on Twitter, but I've heard that one use of Twitter is that there are people who are highly regarded in various industries who post updates on Twitter, and people "follow" them on Twitter to see what they're up to, and people learn about new industry trends that way. I've heard about people in the software & web development industries, for instance, who post updates on Twitter, which others follow.

What I've noticed is that people tend to use Facebook mostly for personal stuff, and people tend to use Twitter mostly for professional (or less personal) stuff - but there are people who use both for both reasons.

That's funny, I was thinking about this very thing this morning. Here's
an interesting use of Facebook and Twitter:

KFDM's 6 This Morning (kfdm.com) asks their morning audience interesting questions each morning. An example might be "We're wondering how many of
you out there are worried about the threat of radioactive fish? Go to
Facebook and post your thoughts..." Then, later on they put up live a
shot of their Facebook page, magnified to show the comments, and scroll
    through them.

The same station redid their weather section on kfdm.com about a year ago
and use Twitter to broadcast weather updates through the day. I'm sure
they probably tied an RSS feed to Twitter for their news, but I don't use
any of that. Only reason I knew about the weather feed is they mirror it
on the weather page. I don't like it, but I can certainly see how it's
useful for others. I miss the more detailed forcasts they used to do...
seemed more personal. It all comes off as automatic/computerized now... :p

I feel a little awkward doing that kind of posting sometimes, because when you comment on something on Facebook, it shows up on your wall, and all of your friends on Facebook will be able to see it, and I wonder that some people might see such comments and think they're strange or something.. I dunno.. I suppose I feel like Facebook makes some things a little overly public, which perhaps shouldn't be so public.

Honestly, it's not the radioactive fish I'm worried about, it's all the times I had to stick the gas tanks and open up the tank and have a rush of gas fumes hit me in the face from the over-pressured mid-grade tank as well as working right behind Connoco refinery. All the plants being caught dumping chemicals in the land just around the corner from where I used to work.... Nah, Radioactive fish just doesn't seem to scare me any more....

One more thing you've missed... Play games and share ideas (via comments on friends' posts) with complete strangers....

FB and BBSing have a lot in commmon for me, with regards to the fact that I'm
a very quiet person... But, on FB and BBSes, I don't have that much trouble opening up a bit and "talking"...
