• HHG - Another MUD

From Rassilon@VERT/CITADEL to All on Wed Mar 24 04:45:00 2010
Yah, I was looking up some appropriate (and different) door games that I
might possibly use & I remembered a great one that I used to play in the 80's called The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Great game based on the novels
    of Douglas Adams.

So, I go out looking for this, thinking by now it's gotta be freeware by now
& there HAD to have been someone who ported it to dos.

    WRONG!

This game, written by Infocom in 1984 supports only: Amiga, Amstrand CPC, Apple II, Atari 8-bit, Atari ST, Browser (ok, a new modification), Commodore 64, DOS, Mac, PC Booter, TI-99/4A, TRaSh-80, and TRaSh-80 CoCo.

So, seeing that the game is OLD to begin with and it only supports operating s ystems that went out with prohibition, you'd think it'd be cheap or even FREE....

    WRONG!

They want $74 bucks for that damn thing! I think back in the 80's I paid
like $10 to register my copy so that I had something better than ZORK on my system.

Ya, ya, ya...I'm old...I think I broke my hip...

But, SERIOUSLY, WTF?!?! I think someone's got a babel fish inserted into the wrong oriface...

You might want to look and see if you can't get it to run with that AGT
door program. HHG was an older infocom game, and I think it may have been
based upon the same game system Zork/ZorkII/ZorkIII was based upon.
If so, various places have made intpreters to read those files and make them
work on newer systems without any protection....

Screw the movie. The movie SUCKED. Read the books, see the TV series or listen to the Radio Series. Seriously, you're missing out.

You couldn't do it without permission from Douglas Adams' wife (he died, unfortunately) and/or the BBC. You'll notice in the game credits it lists
the programmer & Douglas Adams himself.

Greed's one thing but that's just crazy! $74 for a game that was written in '84? I understand there's a thing called COLLECTORS but who would pay that much for that?

IIRC it's pretty much signal compatible with a 3.5" floppy drive, so you just need simple adapter. You can also find cables that have both types of connectors (5.25" used an edge connector typically, 3.5" typically used an IDC connector) on them. Assuming your floppy controller still supports a 5.25" drive, you're good to go.

I suppose I do have a 5.25 drive for the Apple II. I bought it just to play

Too bad I sold my Apple II to buy my wife a laptop. Got a fair price for it
