  • External Modem + Virtual PC

    So I'm running Win XPMode on top of Win7/64, and it runs great for
    everything. The only problem is I can't get my USRobotics Courier to work in Virtual Mode. So the modem is connected to COM1, and VPC has set COM1
    connected to Physical COM1 (There's a check mark that delays using the
    modem, but either way I get the same problem.

    So when I startup VPC, the modem activates (not sure what it's doing, but it raises DTR/RTS), and this isn't documented very well, but I guess you go
    into Phone and Modems control panel in VirtXP and add a standard modem. I
    tried that, and I couldn't choose COM1. I also tried the USR drivers from
    the site, and that allowed me to choose COM1, but after that nothing will recognize the modem.

    If I quit out of VPC, the modem works normally. My only guess is that the
    modem is freaking out because it's a PnP modem. I borrowed a USB->RS232
    adapter from a friend and that works, but I wanted to see if anyone has a similar setup and might be able to help.

    A usb adapter isn't a bad solution, but USB Serial adapters can be a bit
    flaky, and I'm not sure which ones have good 16550 UARTs.

    I am an idiot, I ran SexPOTS as a service and it was starting up and
    occupying the COM port. Removed the service and everything is peachy. Sorry all.
