I have an LCD monitor for my computer, which is about 5 years old. Tonight noticed a small black area in the upper-left corner of the screen where part the picture was gone. I noticed it was very hot there, and I could smell something almost burning there. I turned the monitor off for a few minutes turned it back on, and the picture is fine again. Then I noticed the image flicker a bit.. Also, in the past few months, I've noticed a humming noise coming from the monitor after it's on for a little while, and if I squeeze i in the right places, the humming goes away. Might it be time for a new monitor?
I hate to see this one possibly kicking the bucket now, as it has been a nic monitor.. Were it not for these issues now, I wouldn't be thinking about replacing it.
Considering the symptoms, I'd say it's time to IMMEDIATELY discontinue
using the monitor. Either something is shorting out, or a capacitor is failing. Either way, I'd be worried of fire.
