  • Windows crashes...

    At any given time, for NO real reason, Windows XP crashes.
    Here's what happens:
    1. I'll be doing anything (e.g, idle, gaming, surfing the web...)
    2. Suddenly, my screen goes black, and my keyboard lights flash (caps lock, scroll lock, numlock) only once.
    3. The whole computer pretends like nothing happened. There's no BSOD, no
    Event Log, no Dr Watson log, no NOTHING! It just pretends a normal startup occurred.

    Here's what I've tried:
    -Checked for hard disk errors - Nothing
    -Checked for short circuits, loose plugs, etc - Nothing
    -Checked for faulty hardware - Nothing
    -Checked event viewer, watson log, anything possible to trace it back to - Nothing related to the crash itself.
    -Run a scan - Nothing
    -Defragged - Nothing
    -Defragged registry - Nothing
    -Boot from another OS saved on the same HD - No crashes. Obviously proves it's a windows issue.

    NOTICE: I REFUSE TO REFORMAT UNLESS IT'S A PURE LAST RESORT.

    Any idea what could be the cause?

    did you check your "sleep" options, its seems like it's going to sleep then waking right back up.

    Usually, if it is a blue screen of death, you get a bugcheck in the event logs, but just to rule anything out, if you go to system properties->Advanced->Startup and Recovery under System failure, uncheck the automatically restart, then 'ok' out of the boxes, and reboot.

    So the next time it does that, if it is a bsod, it will stop on the screen with the codes and such.

    Also, in the bios/cmos, you might have a hard drive test, and it could check the drive.

    Another thing would be if you have 2 sticks of memory, take one, or both out, or clean the edges (tin/gold) with a pencil eraser, then get rid of the eraser particles that come off.

    Also, jot down all your drivers in device manager, look on the website for your computer and update the drivers for your nic, chipset, graphics.. anything.. plus all normal windows updates.

    Don't know if anything above will help, but can't hurt to give it a try.
