    Howdy Y'all:

    Many moons have passed since I operated a ham radio. I probably can't remember 70% of the Morris Code. :-)
    I am thinking about getting back into it but for more reasons than a pleasure full hobby. I do believe we will be hit by an EMP bomb and would like to be able to communicate.
    Any ideas would be appreciated.

    That's pretty similar to the reasons that I want to have one, as well, actually. I've been studying EMP generating tech for awhile here, too; even have some textfiles for such on my BBS. :)
    What's with the tube type ham radios? Do you know of any [older, presumably] common ones that can still be found around anywhere? It'd be awesome to get to work with some older tech like that.

    It's a good thing they dropped the need for morse testing! You can reactivate your license (or get a new one) without needing to do morse. While there are people that still use it or practice it, no one uses it on VHF except the die hards and repeaters that are identifying.

    There is more use of CW on HF though, since CW is narrow and fits well through skipped signals with lots of grain.

    Nice idea. If we get hit with an EMP bomb though, the HAM gear and any other electronics could be rendered useless, unless safely protected from EMP.

    You will want to look into ARES, RACES, MARS, AmRRON and others. These are emergency organizations who all have procedures, nets, and should be interesting to anyone who wants to be prepared for catastrophies.
