Yeah, pretty cool. :) That's on my wish list to do, as part of converting my ham station to solar. The BBS runs off the same DC bus, so would also become solar powered.

    the Linux AX25 stack)?

So, the current setup is a RPi 2, 40Ah of SLA batteries, 30W solar panel, and a cheapy charge controller from Amazon.

I originally started with 20Ah of battery, but saw one cloudy day put me in a voltage deficit it couldn't dig itself out of. With the additional 20Ah, it seems to float well.

I likely will need to add another 30W panel (Or, swap for a 80W), to tide me through winter.

It also originally started off inside of an ammo can, outdoors. I've learned the lesson: Heat and digital electronics don't get along. So, the Pi + Battery system is coming indoors, and the panel outdoors (A more typical setup).

For the AX25 portion, that's actually running on another Pi near the radio. Using Direwolf for the modem, and Linux Node for BBS access (Added the BBS command to the config, and it telnets to the BBS). I tried running them on the same hardware, but the RPi isn't powerful enough to pull duty as a soundmodem and running a BBS.

    Hi Kc2ugv

First many thanks for sharing this information! Thanks a lot!

It also originally started off inside of an ammo can, outdoors. I've learned the lesson: Heat and digital electronics don't get along. So, the Pi + Battery system is coming indoors, and the panel outdoors (A
    more typical setup).

Indeed, I had also termal issues with the Raspberry. Above 50°C my Raspberry will shutdown. I put some heat sink on the Chip. It helps a little but
    I need more airflow.

For the AX25 portion, that's actually running on another Pi near the radio. Using Direwolf for the modem, and Linux Node for BBS access

Will check Direwolf, looks so far very promising for me. Also it supports
    APRS out of the box.

Again many thanks and best 73!

You could try burying a garbage can and put the equipment in it. This would use the ground to regulate the temp. Buried garbage cans are used as root cellars.
Don't know if it would work, but would be a good experiment.

    Lith,

Whoa!!! would love to see some pics of the solar powered pi!!!

I'm actually a Pi owner. Made my own bartop arcade cabinet with it running EmulationStation. Pretty impressive little computers aren't they? :D
