Meh. He's a repetitive blowhard who's a bit too easy to poke fun at (and I shouldn't, and I try not to.)

FWIW I have a couple of things with Digital Ocean and haven't had any real trouble. That said, I always keep a somewhat recent back up someplace else just in case I wake up one morning and discover that my virtual servers have virtually disappeared.

The scenario you described is entirely possible. On the other hand, the newcomer could just leave the boring BBS and move along to the next one in the list, which might be a better system. (Or not.) I suspect that anyone who would give up that easily wouldn't stick around for long in any case.

Of course, that's not to say that people shouldn't be encouraged to customize. The more systems there are with good content, the sooner a newcomer will stumble across them, the more reason they'll have to stay. I know that's what you're trying to say - it's just too bad that you're not better at saying it. If you really wanted to change the situation, well ... something something flies, honey, vinegar, and so on.
