• Internet Rex Help

From Operations@VELENO/VERT/SECTONE to All on Mon Dec 9 16:03:51 2013
I'm using Internet Rex to send packets back and forth for interbbs games. I use the -daemon option and everything has been working great until last week. Now when the program starts, the little Rex icon appears in the system tray for a couple of seconds and then disappears. The program definitely ceases to run so that means that I cannot send out my files when scheduled or nobody can connect to send me any. If I use the regular command of rexw the program will run and do it's stuff and then shut down. but the -daemon option is not working anymore.

Has anybody seen this before? Can anyone help. I guess I could just reinstall it, but that would require configuring it all again. It was running smoothly up until now.

Do you have logging setup?? If you do, what do the log files tell you?

If you don't have log files setup, run the rexcfgw or rexcfgl (depending on the
platform you're on) and go under Files, paths & programs, then "Internet Rex files and paths". Inside there, make sure you set a log filename and then go back to the main menu and go under "Logging options" and make sure you set everything to YES.

Then start the main Internet Rex program and look and see what your log file says as the reason it's failing. That will usually tell you whats going on.

If you're not sure, run an instance of Internet Rex and put in the latest log entries so we can help you track it down.

    Hi Jason,

Yes I do have the log file running. But all it seems to tell me is the command line that I'm running. But I will check again and send over some of the log so that you can see it. Thanks.

    Jason,

I have the log set to show everything and all it seems to show me is the command line for everytime I start it says something about it being started with the -daemon option.

However in splashtop, it's slow enough that I can see it saying in the dos command window (not the log) but the window I run it in something about Rex is already running or something like that. It might say it's already running in _daemon mode. But it's not in the system tray nor it is listed in the processes when I look.

    thanks,
    Ken

I have had a similar provblem in the past, twice I think.

I do not know what it is, I thought it had something to do with the traffic I was receiving on it... I was getting massive amounts of mail via IREX.

So, I did a reinstall of IREX and it worked once again.

I have been running IREX for better than 10 years and had this happen twice.

This product has no support so I have no clue why it did what it did.

Is there some kind of INUSE.FLG in your Irex directory? Some kind of flag that would tell it not to run because it's already running? I've heard of this happening before with Irex. It should be a zero byte file, and if it's there, and no Irex is running that you can see, you can safely remove that file and try to restart Irex in daemon mode once again.

    Regards,
    Nick

Just remove the REXUP.0 file and it would have started working again.
If rex isn't shut down correctly that file will still exist in the semaphore directory.

It sounds like there is a semaphore file like rexbusy.0 in your semaphore folder. You can go back and check in the Internet Rex files and paths section in rexcfg to see what your semaphore directory is. Chances are, you need to kill the semaphore file like rexbusy.0

Let me know if you see this file, and if you do, it's safe to delete as long as
rex is not running, which you indicate it isn't running.

    Thank you Shawn,

The problem was I didn't think about looking in the semaphore directory. It was there and it works fine again.

Try setting it up so that it does not minimize to the systray and then run
it with the -DAE option and see what happens.

Delete the files in your Internet Rex semaphore directory. That will fix

Add a line to delete all the semaphore files to your BBS Batch file, if you have one. That way your system will just nuke the semaphore files before starting the mailer...
