• What's up with tradewars? (Been away a while)

From Viperprime@VELENO/VERT/MDX1 to All on Wed Feb 27 04:17:17 2013
I finally got the new board up and running and thought I'd see about getting tradewars 2002 installed. Back in the day I had a registered copy, but who knows what happened to that floppy!

So I do some searching online and see the TWGS that looks like an internet
app with it's own server sockets. Is this the modern "official" incarnation?

    Will it run on synchronet?

I was kind of just looking for the old Tradewars 2002 that we used to play
back in the 90's. I have to say it's confusing as heck for someone just getting back into it.
    What's happening with Tradewars?

TWGS is a self standing tradewars server.
the dos door game is no longer updated.
and TWGS has a special version for itself.

Same here. but its only 25 bucks or something now a days to register.

So I do some searching online and see the TWGS that looks like an internet app with it's own server sockets. Is this the modern "official" incarnation

tradewars game server and the other tradewars.exe are both still the official.
thing is if you want to register you have to do it through the game server.
it uses paypal and sends the payment to the developers email inbox. when he finds it he willsend you a registration code. it will upgrade your copy to a gold status where you can edit and cheat the hell out of the game.

I have still yet to get mine working but i just have to sit down and read the synchronet wiki under the how to section. right now if a user tries to access the dorr it executes the door program but a window pops up on the bbs side
but the user just sees a twinkling cursor. if they press their keys it sends their key activity to the door came but the tradewars window doesnt echo to
the end user. and i have to close the window manually or they have to hang
    up.

if i use the game server it takes over the bbs's telenet ports so i need to figure how to get them to play nice with each other. if I want to play
locally i can by going into the game server. no one really calls anymore so thats really not a bad way to play.

    Will it run on synchronet?

pharcyde.org has it running on his synchronet board. I think he's linux though .
and there is an article on synchro.net wiki on step by step how to.

I was kind of just looking for the old Tradewars 2002 that we used to play back in the 90's. I have to say it's confusing as heck for someone just getting back into it.

It is also an online web game too. It has arrived to the 21st century. still k ickin.

I messaged them on Facebook and they said it would be possible to register the door if they emailed me. I'm still waiting for a reply for it...

you should be cautious about registering or sending money to someone you
don't know via email. the TWGS has an integrated way of registering and
paying using paypal. it's kind of sounds shady to register by email from some character met on facebook. anyone can mask themselves as an "important"
person on facebook. I hope you dont think Craigslist is a reputable establishment.

If you do, i have a bridge you can buy. New, Gently used.

The email address is at eisonline.com, who currently sells TWGS/TW2002 so I'd imagine, unless they've been hacked, that it's legit. And I never said I'd register over email. They just told me to contact them is all. I still haven't heard from them, so who knows.

he does take a while to get through the email in his inbox. it took a weekend to get my registration numbers because paypal sends the guy an email telling him he got my money and he has to manually send the registration stuff. I
only registered for one node and got the first one free. after registering
your game server can be listed in their website of places you can play the game.

I explained to them I don't want to run TWGS because I'm running on a resource limited VPS (and Linux to boot). My guess is TWGS is written in VB6, the worlds' least portable language. Porting it to Linux would probably involve a complete rewrite to Mono and cost more than it's worth to do.

They should have built-in a door mode into TWGS, or at least have a shim/program to run it as a door.
