    Hi, all,

Anyone know of a tosser that supports the Squish message format?

    TIA,

sure... what OS? are you looking to interface it with other software, too?

squish being the #1 squishbase tosser... the husky hpt also does squish as
well as JAM and MSG... there're others, too, but the OS comes more into play with them... squish and hpt can be compiled for your OS... others are only available as binaries... some tossers will work with existing software like, eg: maximus and squish...

Ok. I downloaded the HPT tosser for Linux. I'm having problems with it, however. The config files are a little bit cryptic. It doesn't seem to toss
the packets into the corresponding FidoNet directories. Here's the log:

    Hello ignatius,

I'm looking for something for Linux. I will be using it with BinkP.

hpt and crashmail are the big two I suppose you could say for linux. hpt uses a
fido/config file that can be a bit of a beast to get setup but will serve you well once you do.

Have you run tparser? If not it will help you solve problems with your config.

If you want me to look at your fido/config feel free to import it into a netmail and send it over and I'll have a look, or post it here if you like.

Don't panic, there is lots of help here.. :)

I should have mentioned squish. The 3.03 release of Maximus includes squish and
it works on linux just like it did in dos and OS/2. Max has problems but squish
works well. If you ever used squish before it'd be just the same.. :)

squish should do the job if you can get the code and compile it... hpt is
also worth a look as it uses the same (IIRC) SMAPI code from scott dudley
with fixes and enhancements... squish does only squish bases but hpt does more...

it is an either/or situation, really...

and if it really came down to it, you could run fastecho or one of the other traditional tossers in dosemu... of course you'd be limited to the 8.3 naming aspect... natively compiled squish may also have that limitation but i know that hpt does not... that's a consideration you need to think about in reference to your other software that will be accessing the message bases...

    In areas:

Unless your BBS can handle .MSG style messages, you should probably change your
NETMAIL area to use squish also.

Every one of your "EchoArea" tags include your node number. That's why your logs are saying they're packing mail for your own system. Remove all of your node numbers from every one of those. You should only have node numbers you're EXPORTING to on those lines.

Your commented out Agoranet EchoArea tags should have my node number, not yours. Change those to 46:1/100.0, and DON'T put (or keep) your node number on those lines either.

    In links:

Comment out the "Link Fake Point" stuff. You only need my information in there.

    In config:

You need some route info. At the bottom of the page, put:

    route crash 1:154/10 1:* 2:* 3:* 4:*
    route crash 46:1/100 46:*

Other than that, things should start working better after all those things are taken care of.

    Regards,
    Nick

I'm having a hard time reading your config. I think you need each keyword on one line. I'm going to import a links file for you below. It is very simple and
omits many keywords that you can add if you need them. I have the autoareacreate keywords disabled becuase they are little different in the version I use. If you need them, uncomment them and run tparser to make sure everthing is OK.

This is a very basic links file based on the setup I use for my own points here. Your whole setup will likely need more, like routeing statements but it's
a start. Post your comments and questions.

Unless your BBS can handle .MSG style messages, you should probably
change your NETMAIL area to use squish also.

    Nod.

Your commented out Agoranet EchoArea tags should have my node number, not yours. Change those to 46:1/100.0, and DON'T put (or keep) your node number on those lines either.

    Done. Thank you.

    In config:

You need some route info. At the bottom of the page, put:

    route crash 1:154/10 1:* 2:* 3:* 4:*
    route crash 46:1/100 46:*

    Done and done.

Other than that, things should start working better after all those
    things are taken care of.

    Awesome. Thank you. :)

I'm having a hard time reading your config. I think you need each
keyword on one line. I'm going to import a links file for you below. It
is very simple and omits many keywords that you can add if you need
them. I have the autoareacreate keywords disabled becuase they are
little different in the version I use. If you need them, uncomment them and run tparser to make sure everthing is OK.

    Thank you.

This is a very basic links file based on the setup I use for my own
points here. Your whole setup will likely need more, like routeing statements but it's a start. Post your comments and questions.

    Thank you again.

You don't seem to have your Agoranet address specified in config, these lines:

That's the issue I had recently. If you have the source for libcompat, does running autogen in that directory do anything? I don't have the source and haven't tried.

Just a quick google search without looking into any of the links, I saw (not knowing what version of SuSE they're provided for, or even what version SuSE is

Did you think I was talking about downloadable files? I mentioned that they were only mentioned in the first 10 or so search results, and didn't bother digging into those links because I don't run that OS.

I would try asking on an OpenSuSE forum or maybe an IRC channel on Freenode or something, unless someone here has experience with that OS and knows how to answer your question. I gave it a small effort, but was only trying to help point you in the right direction as much as I could without having to completely learn your Linux distrobution in order to answer your question(s) for you. :)

Yeah, I did, actually. My bad. I do not know why OpenSuSE doesn't have that library in it's archive. It _should_. I just want to get Squish working, because I believe that's what Impulse supports/recommends. And needs, I guess. As it is now, I recieve packets (in squish format), but they're absolutely unreadable. In the IMP-MAIL.CFG file, it briefly mentions the Squish tosser,

HRmmm, I've never heard of getting packets in squish format. Are you sure it's not just a FTN format? Normally that's how you get messages as
compressed echomail, and your tosser (Squish, HPT, crashmail etc) is what
would toss them to the message base. (Squish, JAM, MSG, SBBS, etc)

And this method works? If so, why are you trying to compile Squish? Squish is just another tosser (but only supports one message base format), whereas HPT is
much more versatile these days in that category.

If HPT is not working for you, I would be willing to believe that it would be a
lot easier to get that working than trying to find dependencies for a tosser that's no longer supported.

When you toss the mail with HPT, does everything work as expected? (Check logs) After you toss the mail with HPT, are you trying to run IMP-MAIL.EXE or whatever ancient unsupported thing you're trying to use? If so, does it give any error messages? Any output at all?

I don't know if IMP-MAIL.EXE is a tosser, or if it's just a message importer. Other softwares has the same kind of thing in those days, like OBV-MAIL.EXE and
INIQMAIL.EXE or whatever they were named. So with that I *think* you're on the right track having a separate mailer and tosser (binkd/hpt). IMP-MAIL.EXE may just import those messages into the BBS.

With that said, are there any options that can be run with IMP-MAIL.EXE?
What are the contents of IMP-MAIL.CFG?
Are your message bases setup in Impulse properly? Maybe a screenshot of a message base setup screen?

Anyone trying to help out with this has hardly any information to go by. Most of us aren't going to install all that software, so we need as much information
as you can possibly give in order to play this guessing game. :)

Well, it retrieves the packets (bundles, whatever) just fine. BinkP "gets" them, and HPT tosses them just fine. I just can't get Impulse to "read" them.

If HPT is not working for you, I would be willing to believe that it
would be a lot easier to get that working than trying to find

    Nod. Good point.

Yes. Everything workse fine. Like I said, I just can't get Impulse to read them. Yes, I run IMP-MAIL.EXE, and it appears to toss the messages, however, i'm left with a corrupted boards.dat file, which holds vital information on
the bases that are on the board. AFAIK, i'm using the latest IMP-MAIL.EXE program. Nope. No error messages.

I don't know if IMP-MAIL.EXE is a tosser, or if it's just a message importer. Other softwares has the same kind of thing in those days, like OBV-MAIL.EXE and INIQMAIL.EXE or whatever they were named. So with that

What I believe what IMP-MAIL.EXE does, is convert the Squish bundles to Impulse's propietary message base format. I could be wrong. I contacted
Horrid (the last person to work on Impulse), and asked him to send me the IMP-MAIL.PAS unit, but, no luck so far.

With that said, are there any options that can be run with IMP-MAIL.EXE? What are the contents of IMP-MAIL.CFG?
Are your message bases setup in Impulse properly? Maybe a screenshot of a message base setup screen?

There are "toss" and "scan" parameters for IMP-MAIL.EXE

    --//-- begin IMP-MAIL.CFG -----
    ; Sample Configuration File
    ;
    ;
; Note that this is a SAMPLE FILE ONLY. You will need to change it to
    ; match your system configuration.
    ;
    ;
; The "Echo_Toss" option defines the command executed to process
; incoming EchoMail packets and/or compressed mail bundles. It

Yes, message bases are setup correctly.

Anyone trying to help out with this has hardly any information to go by. Most of us aren't going to install all that software, so we need as much information as you can possibly give in order to play this guessing
    game. :)

Nod. Understood. Hopefully, I provided sufficient information in this post.

By the looks of the configuration file, it seems as though IMP-MAIL.EXE is an actual tosser, and not just an importer. Have you tried running IMP-MAIL.EXE on
an incoming packet/bundle without running HPT?

Just try taking HPT out of the equasion for a little bit. Instead of running HPT on bundles/packets that arrive in your inbound directory, try running IMP-MAIL.EXE on them and see what happens.

By the way the configuration file looks, IMP-MAIL.EXE seems as though it may already have an old version of Squish built into it. If that's the case, then you're trying to toss mail twice by using both HPT and IMP-MAIL.EXE. By the time IMP-MAIL.EXE gets to it it has nothing to do (since HPT already tossed it into what seems to be a message base that Impulse cannot read properly).

So if you were to run IMP-MAIL.EXE on an arriving bundle, and it imports it properly, you may have to wipe your message base data files (only the ones located on the physical machine. You wouldn't have to remove them from your BBS) and start them over only using IMP-MAIL.EXE instead of HPT.

I'm only guessing at this, so I'm not guaranteeing it would work or anything. Just giving you another option to try.

    Regards,
    Nick

So, I changed the lines to this:

    Echo_Scan Squish c:\home\imp\hpt\secure c:\home\imp\hpt\outbound

    I'm still getting a corrupted boards.dat file. :(

    That's not what I meant.

What I meant was that you disable HPT completely. So if you have a line in your
binkd.conf to run HPT whenever these packets and bundles arrive, THAT would be the line you change to use IMP-MAIL.EXE instead.

If HPT is tossing those packets/bundles first, then IMP-MAIL.EXE is trying to toss those same packets.. then you're trying to toss messages twice, which will
most likely corrupt your message bases.

    That's not what I meant.

To clarify, BinkP puts the incoming bundles in /home/imp/hpt/secure and the outbound packets in /home/imp/hpt/outbound. So, yes, I did completely disable HPT.

Like I said, I did completely disable HPT. And, besides, IMP-MAIL.EXE is a
DOS program, so I couldn't put it in the poll.sh/binkd.conf files.

Yes, I understand. And again, I did disable HPT.

    Thanks, man,

Yes, I understand. And again, I did disable HPT.

If that's the case, then you may have to delete your message base's physical data files and start fresh, since HPT was used to toss messages into them first. Start out with fresh empty message bases and try IMP-MAIL.EXE.

If that doesn't work, I'm out of ideas. I refuse to run DOS programs (besides dosemu for doors) here basically for that reason.. More headaches and problems that there needs to be.

Noone else runs Impulse anymore. When you venture into something like that, besides whatever documentation is available to you, you're basically on your own. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. :(

if imp-mail is using squish or has it built in, then this is likely not right... those "in out" options are commands... not directories... squish has to be told "in" to process newly arrived mail bundles and packets... squish
is told "out" to scan newly written mail in the bbs out to bundles or packets to send to your upstream... the directory locations should be defined
elsewhere in your imp configuration unless it is expecting a specific
    directory tree and base location...

Ah. Good to know. Thanks. Yes, in the message base configuration, I have the directories assigned like this:

    ...
    /home/imp/netmail/fido/10th_amd
    ...
    /home/imp/netmail/agora/agn_sys
    ...

    And so on..

Also, I have the echomail addresses set up in each message base as well.

So, I downloaded a copy of Squish for DOS. After configuring it, I tested out IMP-MAIL.EXE, and it runs SQUISH.EXE, and tosses the messages. The problem is that IMP-MAIL doesn't accept that SQUISH.EXE tosses the messages, and still gives me a corrupted boards.dat file. So, the problem _is_ IMP-MAIL.EXE. Damnit.

if imp-mail is a ftn mail tosser for impulse, there /has/ to be somewhere to tell it where to look for inbound mail and where to place outbound mail...
even if imp-mail is not a ftn tosser but a format convertor like used to be used for tossing ftn mail in WWIV, there's still somewhere that it has to
