• Luck'n out again...

I have a *real* hard time passing up computer equipment put out with a FREE sign on it.

A couple of years ago, I got a nice Canon inkjet MFP with an automatic document feeder. It jammed consistently - which turned out to be the result of a pen that had rolled down the output feed area. Separate tanks for each color, plus a black pigment tank, runs nicely on third-party ink which sells for $15 a set. It's the first time I was able to print color and not be worried about the cost.

I just adopted a stray HP M175nw left on the roadside, a color laserjet MFP with a scanner and ADF. It left lines down the side of the print, looked like a bad roller. Cleaned the rollers, to no avail. The imaging drum looked like it was leaking, no matter how much I cleaned it. Picked up a new drum for $14, dropped it in, and no more lines!

I'm doing a lot more spreadsheet work, it'll be nice to make color prints.

That's a great find! I bet you will enjoy it a lot, especially since it's a colour one :) I'm still amazed at what people chuck out to the roadside or in the bin nowadays.

I haven't had the need for a printer for a few years, but my m.o.
would be to get/find/buy a serious HP Laserjet from an office environment (preferably with a very healthy drum) and use that. Networked, no shitty inkjet stuff that dries up or needs replacing and they just work (tm).

Had a need for a few prints here and there again and found an M402dn on our national marketplace, networked and a healthy drum that will probably outlive me with our printing :P.

No freakin' wifi or inkjet shizzle for printing in this house :)
IMHO there should be a global ban on inkjet printers that are almost cheaper then their refill parts and the vendor lock-in that comes with it.

Agreed totally. I'm surprised their practices are legal.

There's a guy on Youtube you two might like, unfortunately I can't find
his page. He will buy "stuff" like the Amazon mystery boxes of broken
stuff, batches of Xboxes and other stuff that's basically dead and sees
how much he can sell them for, or write off the cost if he can't fix
them, and keeps a running spreadsheet. It's fun to watch so I'll have
to try and dig in my history.

That reminded me of a guy who was laid off and started picking things up locally and selling online. Electrical items - circuit breakers,
switches -- and door hardware seemed to move very quickly.

    It's a hustle, but the money's there.

Might be a different dude, but I've seen some videos like this. Surprisingly entertaining, especially when they luck out and get something valuable (and maybe not even really broken.)

Nice. Not sure its the same channel I was referring too, but according to my watch history I did watch a video he put together on how to thoroughly clean a PS5 after buying one from a friend semi-recently only to discover to discover that it was deceptively filthy. :P
