.AS -> .SWF

I have a .AS file I need to compile into a .SWF file, but I'm totally new to this family of programming and am pretty clueless about it.
I installed FlashDevelop, and added Flex SDK to the tools, and I go to open project but it won't let me open the .AS file this way. Is the .AS file not considered a project by the program? I'm missing something, please fill me
in. I'm not writing my own scripts, I'm just editing one based on the
author's instructions, but he didn't tell me how to compile.
Any advice on this issue would be greatly appreciated!
