So, things seem pretty quiet in this area. Figured I'd see who else out the like to code and tinker with applications. What languages does everyone like use?

I work on Enthral BBS in my free time in C/C++, then I play a with with
python which I use as an internal scripting language. I also tinker with X/84 bbs which is written in python so it's some good stuff to learn python. At work I handle a vide variety of languages from SQL, to ASP, .NET, Java. And most recently I've been dabbling with SDL2 lately.

    You're a g00r00 in training then!

I'm thinking of learning some python over my winter months as I have a Raspberry Pi and wanted to use it to learn some basic coding. Other than that sadly I'm a noob but interested to learn.

I just use Pascal. ;) I'm too old and stupid to learn anything new now,
and I've forgoten most of the pascal I once knew.

Having said that when I'm at the trailer on the metered internet connection that's when I normally fire up VP and start hacking away at things again.

    I suppose so.. hehe.

I've been working on coding my own software since about 2004, although it's been a huge learning process since there isn't alot of documentation and help when it comes to learning everything that is involved in a BBS. A Pi is as good a platform as any to learn on. Python is a good place to start and there alot of tutorials out there.

It really depends alot of what type of programs your interested in making. Web, Console, GUI, Games.. each area has different things to focus on.
Althogh learning some basic console is a good starting point that will trnaslate into everything else lateron.

I haven't touched pascal in over 10 years, it's a good language and all but doesn't interest me as much as it useta. I wouldn't limit yourself through, theres is a lot of neat stuff out there and if you know the basic conecpts of numbers, strings, arrays.. you can easily learn anything once you get the syntax down. The nice thing about linux is alot of these languages are either pre-installed, or easily installed with addons with simple package manager commands.

Learning new stuff helps keep your brain going and feeling young too ;)

So they tell me. ;) I think at this point my brain has mostly shut down,
all I know now is hwo to talk about the weather endlessly. Okay, I also know how to ask "Any plans for the weekend?" and "DId you do anything this weekend?" and act like I give two shits.

I really don't know. I just figured I would start from scratch and see where the interest took me. I suspect it will be to support my interests in BBS or HAM radio.

    Cheers, A.

If you interested in Java, give Eclipse a try, it has some really great plugin's. This is a video i've been working off of to learn unit testing and good pratices for legcay code refactoring. The principals are great and
pretty much carries over to any language. I highly reccomend it:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_NnElPO5BU0
    Testing and Refactoring Legacy Code

I'm actually applying many of the principals as I rewrite Enthral BBS for
Alpha 2. The code quality has already gone up with writting unit tests.

With the few tries I made with writing java code (mostly just tutorials) it seems like it would be possible to write console apps... aka doorgames. Do
you think that would be feasable?

Well sure, java can do console. And if your doing straight STDIO like System.out.writeln() etc.. i think you might be good. I really haven't played much with it and only wrote console apps for stupid school assignments. I'm about to take another java class for an easy credit too, get a quick refresher and stuff.
