It sucks to see people trimming their BBS assets down, like when
people shut down their boards due to inactivity, or due to financial reasons. Would you shut your board down if you had 100 callers per
day?
So, some people are doing really good jobs at reeling people back in. g00r00 gave us more than enough tools to make awesome shit happen.
Gryphon has somehow attracted the attention of many old homies and
he's drawing them back towards the scene. Many ansi/ascii artists are still hacking away at masterpieces. Caphood is showing people exactly
what the fuck you do with a pile of kick ass, original ansi. Zero
Reader is introducing all kinds of awesome add-ons to the delight of
his visitors.
I still have concern that we are a dying breed though. Can we bring in
new recruits? Can you take an 11 year old kid, and show him how to use TheDraw, and expect him to create beautiful artwork out of typewriter characters!? Let's hope so!
A lot of you 3lit3 fuckers disagree with me on this, but I say open it
up to the world. Don't let this culture fade away. Take the time to explain it to the kids. They will become those cool motherfuckers that
we were when we were in high school. People who networked in an out of
the box kind of way, met cool people, got attracted to
computer-related skills, made shit-tons of money, made lifelong weed connections, and lastly, honored a tradition that we DIDN'T take for granted.
Also, "Opening it up" means stop acting like this is some exclusive
club. If I found my way on your BBS, then I've got news for you: Your
not that fucking exclusive!
Some kids are at that stage where they need to hide shit from their parents. I get that. What if their parents check their phones and see
apps like "Facebook," "Twitter," etc? They will check that shit out,
and find out what their up to. But for those kids who need some
serious privacy, their parents will see like "Telnet for Android," or "Netrunner for Iphone." They will be like "WTF? I'm going to bed.."
LOL God bless the kids who have good intentions, but need privacy.
That's what BBSing was like for me back in the day.
Some people shut them down because they can't afford to put food on the table for their families, which is completely understandable. Others, do
the people that are leaving the hobby. Most of the time you can't take

I understand enjoying sysoping, with or without callers, but it was getting a little ridiculous when I realized I was paying for a domain & hosting just to meagerly entertain a handful of people. It's more expensive now than it was in the old days. I used to pay $10 a month for
a dedicated phone line. Shared hosting is like $9 a month, and then
domain renewals can get out of control.
I get that, but I remember 2 of my favorite BBSs (3 counting mine) going down with messages saying stuff like "No callers!"
I'd be thrilled if someone wanted to show me their old telegraph
hardware, or early telephone operator tools. But now that I think about it, I probably wouldn't be as thrilled with it if I was 11.

They have everything handed to them, as far as computers and
communication goes. They never need to get their hands dirty with any programming languages, or even book readings to accomplish their goals. They are shitty typists too.

Of course I prefer it with users but I enjoy BBSing for the sake of it.
As far as domains, I pay (depending on the domain) between $25-50 a
year for a domain I would be using anyway so no extra cost, I just
created a subdomain and redirect that to the BBS.
I've enjoyed your rants tonight man! Thanks for the good karma too. I
anymore. I just enjoy having my little plot out here to lord over and
play with and if I get callers, then great! If people like it, that's
interest as I did code and communicated with people far away. People do
seeing me post ANSIs on Facebag.. folks who haven't been on a board in
20 years. It's been very interesting.
I'm a 2 finger typist, but fast now. I'm trying to get my 13 year old
son to take a typing class, but maybe they'll have Minority report
I think that's a great way to handle it. I don't feel the excitement
for BBSing like I used to. Back in 2010, I was really excited about
it, finding out that it could be accessed online, and all that. But
the scene is kinda stale, I think.
That's a good idea! I bet that most of the old BBS folk don't realize
that it's still happening. When I first got back into it, I was sure
that I would be sticking with Renegade, but then I found out about
Mystic and it blew my mind. There's a lot of fun stuff in this
software to utilize, but I'm just way more into learning bits and
pieces of modern stuff, these days.
I tip my hat to the people that still take the time to create amazing software for this hobby. If that were to ever stale out.. I'd probably be gone as well. But as long as there's something new to tinker with for
hours on end at any given time, it'll keep my interest.

I will make this work Nick. ;)

I was transmitting Morse code over a radio.... ham radio. That's a
hobby that a year ago I was all gung-ho on (in fact, I'm the outgoing president of what I think is probably the largest radio club in the state). But I've sort of grown fatigued with it all. The hobby has

really a problem, that the local club appears to be "missing in action". Living in a rural area (Greenbriar County, west Virginia) makes it a
Anyways, I'm going to get my shack setup over the next few months and do something with this rather than sit around listening again. :)
Screw samba shares. Grab the Golded sources on your Pi and install
there. Copy your configs over and use putty to ssh into it from
anywhere.
You've done this? I got golded to compile on the pi no problems,
but when I attempt to launch it nothing happens. Haven't gotten
around to figuring out why I assumed it didn't work with the ARM cpu.
I do. ;) The thing is... MBSE does bluewave packets, which I prefer more then QWK (I know it's stupid) and I'm so used to the QuickBBS
style setup that I find MBSE easier to configure then I did mystic.

They sound like interesting people to talk to when you're bored. What kinds of stuff do they talk about? Just shooting the shit? Or are they trying to do something productive?
The way you described it reminds me of when I was about 12, and I briefly tried getting into CB radio communication. I was already into the BBS stuff, but one of my nerdy friends showed me a community of CB people,
who used to (probably still do) communicate from their homes with CB
How's the range with HAM radios? How local of a community can one have with them? I'd give it a try.

Of course. That's what I'm posting from right now. If you launch
"gedlnx -C/path/to/config" and nothing happens.. then something is
wrong with your configuration file. I think you have to make sure goldkeys.cfg and something else is in the same directory as the executable. Or at least a correct path to them if including them in golded.conf/cfg.
make that thing look every bit NOT like MBSE in order to be able to
not cringe when I go through the login process. :)

that to a certain level, but the CBers are a cesspool. Mostly weird antics, drug dealers and truckers. But that is interesting....
Okay I'll keep at it. :) I was not in "Dosthink" mode I guess.
<Laugh> With luck later today you'll see th golded tearline. ;)
Yep, that didn't take much. ;) For some reason I thought I could
pass the config file via the commandline and it didn't have to be in
the same directory as the execuatble.

I kind of like the fact CB is a free for all, it was sure a lot more
fun back in the day when Dukes Of Hazzard made it all so popular.
You can. But in that case you would have to type out the complete path
to the config file (ie: /opt/golded/bin/gedlnx -C/opt/golded/etc/golded.conf is the exact line I use here). You can't
run "./gedlnx -Cgolded.conf when golded.conf is not in the same
directory. :)

Now you've got me interested! I will keep this in mind if I get the
chance to use one. Does HF mean high frequency? If you're using this method, can you target specific regions? Or will it just be a range of people from here to Russia?
We are all BBS Archeologists. We keep the BBS scene alive, because it's fun, and we can't just toss it in the trash like we did with our Lincoln logs, and he-mans & shit, because it's more than just a hobby; it's a significant part of our history, and a significant part of our present too, for many of us.

I used to love logging on to BBSs with my phone, but I got sick of it,

I could definitely settle for simple message base action on my phone!

That is cool! But if only there was a way for more sysops to offer Bluewave packets via the web. That would be perfect!

have to have your own Fido address to use it? (sysops only?)

it is a point system... your fido bbs sets up a point address for you to use... their mail tosser then tosses the mail into packets for you to
I get it now, and thanks for the explanation. I don't have any sysop credentials with any Fido style networks (I guess by credentials I mean an address,) so I don't think this will be ideal for me to use at the moment,
