I've been thinking about consolidating all of the
server tabs into a two tabs, one for messages
and one for connections, just to simply the UI
    a little bit.Right now each
server has its own tab with its own message and connectionl
ist and stats, but this new approach would have all mes
sages from allservers and all connections for all servers in
their own tabs. I think thisworks best
moving forward, but I wanted to see if anyo
ne objected to it forany reason.H
ere's what it will probably look like when you g

I bought a new box for the BBS about 6 weeks ago. It's not a gaming system
for sure, but it has four cores running at 1.8 with 4 G ram and a TB of HD space. It sits in a nice heavy box about twice the size of a laptop. It has
the specs you'd expect to see in a mid-range laptop but is in a case with
good cooling that easily slips out of sight.

I was looking around for a second hand box but couldn't find anything I liked and saw that one for about double what I would have paid for a second hand
    one.

Changing the look of will not make it require additional resources. MIS uses almost zero resources. Mystic runs great on the original Pi which is basically a Pentium 300, and could still run in DOS... so you're pretty safe.

The only increase you'd see would be if you decided to use the optional SDL mode for MIS, which would increase the memory resources by like 10
    fold...

Just putting a 1080p video buffer into memory is like 15 times what Mystic uses already, which speaks volumes about how little power Mystic needs to run as is!

No objection, just pondering from a UI perspective about this. At present I tend to leave my Telnet view open most of the time on MIS as this is what I
am most interested in seeing and frankly other than binkp and event tabs
with their reporting it's the telnet server that drives the most interaction from the outside world with the BBS.

    ┌ Messages ┐ ┌ Connections ┐ ┌ Stats ┐ ┌ Events ┐ ┌ Terminal ┐ ┌ Setup ┐ ┌───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── │ 04:17 TELNET Server online on port 2323 │ 04:17 FTP Server online on port 1234 │ 04:17 NNTP Server online on port 1235 │ 04:17 BINKP Server online on port 1236 │ 04:17 POP3 Server online on port 1237 │ 04:17 SMTP Server online on port 1238 │ 04:17 HTTP Server online on port 1239

What else would show here g00r00? I quite like the idea of being able to see Telnet activity, stats and messages on the one screen vs having to toggle between tabs to see each aspect.

As a suggestion what if you allowed the view of these elements you are considering to be tabs and viewed as an OR condition to instead be like an
AND condition and let the sysop turn on/off the connections, stats, and server status elements and stack them vertically all on the one screen?

So your connections and stats tabs are displayed on the one page, the various servers - telnet, binkp etc. are toggeled on or off by hotkey or ini file or somesuch so a sysop can choose to die of info overload or not :)

How would you show connections waiting for a call or would you set it up with
a toggle option to show only active connections and/or all ports ?

Hope my reply is not too confusing, to be honest I've slightly confused
myself while writing but I just worry about getting access to combined info
for a service such as telnet by having to tab to multiple places to find something while perhaps trying to 'catch' something going on that a sysop may be interested in / trying to debug at the time.

    - not have the logo taking up 30-50% of the screen

    the corner :)
    - would show what ports are listening & their status
    - list nodes and who's connected
    - have a few lines of significant events/messages/logs/activity such as attacks, recent additions to badip.txt or whatever
    - optionally some bbs stats, like if there's sysop email or netmail waiting..

    Here's an ascii mockup :)

    not :)

Well lets be realistic here. How many connections do you think are going to be active at one time? Are you *really* going to need to filter a connections list to show only one server type?

How would you show connections waiting for a call or would you set it up with a toggle option to show only active connections and/or all ports ?

I question why should MIS need to show a "waiting for connection" at all?

If you allow up to 50 FTP connections, 50 BINKP sessions, 50 SMTP, 50 POP3, 50 telnet, etc... you are saying you want Mystic to show you like 500 "Waiting for connection" lines in the status screen? I don't think we need that
information there at all as it really serves no purpose.

    What do you think?

Thank you very much for your feedback. I'll give you what I don't think works with it and why please don't hate me! ;)

    - The "origin" shows country only, and only has room for 2 characters. I don't think people will know every country in the world by a two letter code, and not everyone uses the CCDNS service anyway. We're also missing the display of an IP address in the connection list which I think is a requirement.

    - I don't believe a 20x5 ANSI logo space isn't enough space to make any meaningful ANSI logo, so I think in your example it has to go in place of making room for the IP address. So that solves that issue.

    - There is a lot of real estate used to show if a server is online or offline, and what its port number is. My original design did this too, but I removed
    it for two reasons:

    1. Its showing information that never changes; its based on static
configuration values. If it never changes, does it really need to be on a
main monitoring screen? Ultimately, I decided its just a "nice to
have filler", and that information is now found on the Stats tab.

    2. One reason for the redesign is to come up with a UI that isn't ugly
and scales with any resonable number of servers. Sure MIS works now but
do we really want to have 12 tabs going that we have to constantly flip
through to see what is happening or do we want one place to see all?

Anyway, your server/port box doesn't allow room for growth, and its
missing the alternative SSL port. Keep in mind the server list might
look like: TELNET, FTP, BINKP, SMTP, POP3, HTTP, NNTP, FINGER, RLOGIN,
REST, MYSTICNET, <custom scripted MPL servers>, <custom scripted python
servers>, plus SSL version of those. How can we fit that on one screen?

    - I'm not quite sure I'll have to look again but I think things like Events,
Terminal, Configuration, etc, were all unaccounted for and would need to be
added in somehow, which likey moves us right back into tabs again anyway.

Based on your feedback I would like to see if I can think of a good way to make it configurable so that something a little closer to what you would like to see could be done.

My example gives one place to see connections for all servers, and that is
the place where you interact with every connection. So how can I make it
    less than that?

In the example I provided you can see and interact with all servers and
people on it, all stats and messages, without pressing more than a single button...

That's cool, thanks for the thorough reponse. :)

A couple of things I threw in based on your screen designs such as the
    origin, etc.

I figured that the services bit would only show services that are enabled,
and maybe offline shows temporary outages / maintenance, or actual
brokenness. I think you said or implied in another post that there isn't a
lot of point in showing things that aren't enabled.

As far as the events goes, one other thing occurred to me even though I don't currently use Mystic's binkp... but an event might not be all the log lines, but a one-liner like: BBS X connected, 4 packets up, 1 packet down

just to show the event happened and what time, but leave room for visibility
    of other events.

At the end of the day I'm happy going whatever you choose, and if you some of my ideas get put in or lead to some inspiration, I'm happy. haha

SMTP is just port 25 and will take as many connections as the tcp stack and resources can handle, but there shouldn't be a requirement for a node surely?

I haven't enabled these services so can't say.

So your connections and stats tabs are displayed on the one page, the various servers - telnet, binkp etc. are toggeled on or off by hotkey ini file or somesuch so a sysop can choose to die of info overload or not :)

Well lets be realistic here. How many connections do you think are
going to be active at one time? Are you *really* going to need to
filter a connections list to show only one server type?

Telnet - likely only 1-2 at a time, the others I'm not sure as I don't currently use FTP, NNTP etc. My point was only to suggest offering the sysop the ability to modify what is / is not displayed to them - so they get to choose in the end how much / less info for the various fields you are
    offering they wish to see.

How would you show connections waiting for a call or would you set it with a toggle option to show only active connections and/or all ports

I question why should MIS need to show a "waiting for connection" at all?

Um it currently does, so that's why I asked. If you define say 5 nodes in the Telnet server you see 5 connections and which are active and which are not. I asked the above question because I wondered how the current status quo may be treated under your proposed UI?

If you allow up to 50 FTP connections, 50 BINKP sessions, 50 SMTP, 50 POP3, 50 telnet, etc... you are saying you want Mystic to show you like 500 "Waiting for connection" lines in the status screen? I don't think
we need that information there at all as it really serves no purpose.

I agree and I was not suggesting that. But I think there needs to be a way (asides a box in the config where you specify the number of nodes /
connections a server will offer) to be able to tell when MIS is running that MIS is offering the end user what as been configured. It does not need to be
a case of all 50 telnet on display...

One thing I do find helpful when I am looking at the Telnet connections
window is to see the activity of the connections when I suspect something is not right or the BBS is under attack from a bot. So being able to see which
of the X number of connections are free vs suddenly busy is a helpful visual cue for me to tell something is up... but hey, if it was gone tomorrow I wouln't loose sleep.

My example gives one place to see connections for all servers, and that
is the place where you interact with every connection. So how can I
    make it less than that?

In the example I provided you can see and interact with all servers and people on it, all stats and messages, without pressing more than a single button...

All good, and thanks... but I'm going to need to see what you end up creating and putting in the next alpha to be able to offer you further feedback as I really need to see it in action to best understand things further :)

BTW - I just upgraded to Netrunner Beta 11 - great job! I am running the upscaling haveing edited the ini and it's very nice at 1440 x 900 on my LCD :)

Whatever you do, I hope it make it look as clean, and simple user firendly as possible. Removing the "waiting for connection" sounds fine with me. Needless information and bulk data that I can easily find in a log or text file.. is good enough for me. That reminds me, if mystic had some kinda why to export parts of it's config to a readable text file. That would come in handy, when scanning for mistakes or typo's. Plus showing newbies the parts that they
just can seem to wrap their heads around. Anyway, just a thought or something you might want to add to the TO-Do list.. There are plenty of other bbs packages and 3rd party software that have a option to export their data to a text file that makes things easier to read and understand WTF is going on.
Just thinking it would be nice to have that option with mystic also.

Sounds good Al. That's the sort of thing I would like to get when I next upgrade.

Yep, I wasn't looking for a new box. I was out with my lady friend and
happened upon it and the price was right.. :)
